00:01 - 00:03
Hi, I'm Leanne.
00:03 - 00:10
And um from this assignment, I decided to talk about the font style trends for 2023.
00:10 - 00:11
And yes, I know it might sound a little boring,
00:12 - 00:14
but bear with me because I think it'll be
00:14 - 00:16
a little bit more interesting as we get going.
00:17 - 00:19
So let's get started.
00:20 - 00:25
So, first of all, we're gonna talk about the font trends for 2023. The what?
00:25 - 00:26
The why and the how?
00:28 - 00:30
So first we have
00:31 - 00:33
the what, what are they and
00:34 - 00:37
what do we do with them? So the font styles
00:37 - 00:38
are a
00:38 - 00:41
visual typographical
00:42 - 00:44
connection to your website.
00:44 - 00:47
They compliment the visuals and graphics,
00:47 - 00:51
but you also want to make sure that they're telling the story that you want
00:52 - 00:56
to tell to your visitor and viewer in a way and manner that
00:56 - 01:01
is easy to understand and keeps them interested and keeps them following.
01:05 - 01:08
So why is this important? Because
01:08 - 01:12
when you choose your font style or styles for your website,
01:12 - 01:15
you, it establishes a message hierarchy,
01:15 - 01:18
it differentiates between the different types of messages.
01:19 - 01:23
It drives a consistency or fluidity throughout the
01:23 - 01:26
pages on your web page or your website
01:27 - 01:30
and it creates a nice design effect that keeps the
01:30 - 01:34
viewer and visitors interested kind of creates some stickiness.
01:38 - 01:40
So how do you go about choosing
01:40 - 01:42
the perfect font styles?
01:42 - 01:48
Well, first you need to determine the purpose of your website. You know, is it a blog?
01:48 - 01:51
Is it a retail store? Are you calling
01:51 - 01:53
someone to action?
01:53 - 01:56
Then you need to identify the core elements and
01:56 - 01:59
you want your font styles to match those,
01:59 - 02:03
you want to establish a message with clarity so
02:03 - 02:07
that the viewer and readers are not confused and frustrated
02:07 - 02:10
and you want to balance the details and legibility.
02:10 - 02:15
Consider the fonts history, doesn't match the style of your website.
02:15 - 02:20
You don't want to put an old times new Roman with a contemporary website.
02:20 - 02:22
It just wouldn't match and feel good
02:23 - 02:24
and you need to be creative.
02:24 - 02:25
Um don't,
02:26 - 02:29
don't be afraid to break the rules with uh
02:29 - 02:33
intention and, and think outside the box and make it kind of fun and exciting.
02:34 - 02:36
Um And don't forget the classic styles.
02:36 - 02:41
Sometimes the classic styles have a pertinent reason to your website and match it.
02:41 - 02:42
Well,
02:42 - 02:47
you also need to consider the licensing uh of the fonts that you want to use.
02:47 - 02:48
You may have to pay for them.
02:48 - 02:49
You,
02:49 - 02:51
you may have to be careful that you don't
02:51 - 02:55
infringe on someone else's font style that they have copyrighted
02:56 - 03:00
and don't be afraid to set a trend, make your own trend, have fun with it.
03:04 - 03:06
So what are the font trends
03:06 - 03:08
of 2023.
03:09 - 03:11
Well, let's get started.
03:12 - 03:14
So the first one is the mal
03:14 - 03:14
got.
03:14 - 03:17
Now, we're not talking about Greek revival,
03:17 - 03:20
gothic. Here we're talking about
03:20 - 03:24
reminiscent of the 19 nineties punk rock, uh
03:25 - 03:28
barbed wire, skulls, metal,
03:28 - 03:33
all of that sort of thing. Uh It's uh black Moody,
03:33 - 03:35
that kind of style. That's what we're looking for.
03:37 - 03:40
Then you have liquid chrome, the liquid chrome.
03:40 - 03:44
Uh It is a little bit sci-fi,
03:44 - 03:45
it can be
03:46 - 03:47
kind of
03:47 - 03:52
interesting and has sort of a little bit of a 3d
03:52 - 03:56
effect and it creates a little bit of an optimistic type
03:56 - 03:58
uh feeling to the viewer.
04:00 - 04:02
Next, you've got your vintage narrow syrups.
04:02 - 04:10
Now, these are great for possibly uh a specific type of creative design website,
04:10 - 04:11
a blog style.
04:11 - 04:15
It's very clean, classic timely.
04:18 - 04:19
Then we have bright red.
04:19 - 04:23
Now, of course, you want to use this sparingly, but the bright red comes into play.
04:23 - 04:28
It's a little bit of a retro vibe and used with like the minimalist cartoon
04:29 - 04:33
that you might have seen. Oh, back in the fifties and sixties.
04:34 - 04:38
Next, you have your variable fonts. Now, these fonts are the ones
04:38 - 04:39
that
04:39 - 04:44
uh are distorted and kind of like thinking outside the box.
04:46 - 04:49
These types of fonts can kind of morph and change.
04:49 - 04:54
In fact, you might actually even see interactive fonts where if you click on it,
04:54 - 04:59
you might actually see the letters fainting or not fainting painting,
04:59 - 05:03
uh like paint running down and dribbling down the page.
05:07 - 05:08
Next, you have your distorted fonts.
05:08 - 05:12
Now, this kind of takes me back to like the 19 seventies
05:13 - 05:17
psychedelic era, but it's also a little bit of a sci-fi and it, it's,
05:17 - 05:22
it can be visually appealing if it's matching the right sort of website.
05:22 - 05:27
You, you want it to be, it's kind of edgy a little bit uh out of the norm.
05:30 - 05:32
Next, you have your art deco revival.
05:33 - 05:36
Um This is reminiscent of like the 19 twenties and of course,
05:36 - 05:40
course was kind of appropriate because of the 100 year mark that
05:40 - 05:44
we've entered in at the beginning of uh 19 or 2020.
05:45 - 05:47
Um If anybody's a Downton Abbey fan,
05:47 - 05:51
this is something that you're probably very familiar with,
05:51 - 05:53
especially towards the end of the series.
05:54 - 05:55
Um But
05:55 - 05:59
this new art Deco revival has a little bit of a contemporary flair to it.
06:01 - 06:05
And then last, but not least we have the eco iconographic mashups.
06:05 - 06:09
Now, these also kind of take me back to um
06:09 - 06:11
the 19 seventies.
06:11 - 06:16
It, I, you know, you saw a lot of this with different rock bands in the seventies,
06:16 - 06:22
but it kind of evokes that feeling of um rebellion
06:22 - 06:24
or nonconformity.
06:28 - 06:29
So
06:31 - 06:34
I've also provided you some useful tools and
06:34 - 06:37
font resources because when you're choosing your fonts,
06:37 - 06:41
sometimes you're not gonna be able to get it just from the web design that
06:41 - 06:43
uh platform that you're using.
06:44 - 06:49
So you might need to go out and research and find other places where you can find the,
06:49 - 06:54
the type of uh fonts that will work for you,
06:54 - 06:58
whether you want them to be interactive or edgy.
06:59 - 07:00
So
07:00 - 07:03
here are some links to some free sites.
07:03 - 07:07
Um You have fonts, Corral Google, fonts, Urban fonts,
07:07 - 07:08
Deon
07:08 - 07:09
font space.
07:09 - 07:14
All of these have a little bit unusual type font
07:14 - 07:18
styles that you won't find necessarily on your basic platforms,
07:18 - 07:20
but most of these are free.
07:21 - 07:26
And then of course, if you're still struggling trying to find the correct for
07:26 - 07:33
uh type of font that you want for your website to make it look just the way that you're
07:34 - 07:36
the kind of message that you're wanting to get across.
07:36 - 07:41
Then there's also other resources, these pay for resources and these are, you know,
07:41 - 07:43
copyrighted fonts,
07:43 - 07:47
uh where there's a license attached to it and you probably have to pay for it.
07:48 - 07:49
So overall,
07:51 - 07:53
I feel like um
07:53 - 07:58
the font styles are very important aspect
07:58 - 08:01
of your web design. I personally
08:01 - 08:05
am trying to create for my web design project.
08:06 - 08:08
Uh It's a website for my husband and,
08:08 - 08:13
and it's kind of collectibles and vintage and antiques.
08:13 - 08:17
So I want something possibly a little bit rustic.
08:17 - 08:23
Uh Since he is a, a man, he's, he, he wants me to make it a little bit, uh
08:24 - 08:25
I don't know, like
08:25 - 08:29
earth tones and woodsy and metals and
08:30 - 08:31
that sort of thing.
08:31 - 08:35
So I'm gonna try to find some fonts based not only on these trends,
08:35 - 08:39
but probably accessing some of those free websites
08:39 - 08:42
to try to find a font that will work well.
08:42 - 08:45
And will I that I could incorporate into my web design?
