  1. Hi everyone, my name is pius Phone and today I'll
  2. be sharing with you my cultural heritage presentation.
  3. Um I one of six Children, two of which are
  4. dogs. I'll be showing you a picture of them later.
  5. But I do have an older sister and a younger
  6. sister. And then I also have a younger brother which
  7. you can see at the picture of the very bottom
  8. that was from our trip to Ocean City just a
  9. couple years ago.
  10. Um I'm from Winchester Virginia.
  11. I grew up with a christian upbringing.
  12. Um generations of my family have always been to the
  13. same church.
  14. So um we spent a lot of our sunday is
  15. going to church.
  16. I am black and I am a feminist here at
  17. B. C.
  18. U. I'm a criminal justice major.
  19. And the way that I like to um show my
  20. identity to those around me is through kindness.
  21. I like to consider myself open minded and accepting.
  22. So now if you are a couple of pictures of
  23. my family um at the very top is a picture
  24. of me and my dad and then right beside that
  25. is a picture of me and my mom.
  26. And then underneath the picture of me and my dad.
  27. We have um a picture from when we got to
  28. see my cousin after he came back from the military
  29. right beside that is me and my mom and my
  30. sister, my older sister at my aunt's wedding.
  31. And then besides that is me and my siblings.
  32. Um when we were in the bathroom is putting on
  33. a bunch of face masks and that the bottom is
  34. another picture of my siblings and my mom and then
  35. there is a picture of one of my dogs, she's
  36. the oldest dog.
  37. Unfortunately I wasn't able to upload a picture of my
  38. other little doggy.
  39. Uh huh.
  40. Um Winchester was a relatively small town with a population
  41. of roughly 28,000 people um which compared to like the
  42. city of Richmond is not a lot at all.
  43. Um At times it felt as if everyone knew everyone
  44. in Winchester and this honestly resulted in a lot of
  45. people having a shared set of beliefs and values, which
  46. for Winchester was pretty conservative.
  47. Um I grew up in a predominantly white city which
  48. caused me to feel out of place, feel out of
  49. place a lot of the times as I was growing
  50. up, uh I grew up in the poorer side of
  51. town. Um so I felt like I was always a
  52. step behind the other kids um at my age as
  53. a child has spent many years playing volleyball, but the
  54. experience wasn't as enjoyable as I wished due to commonly
  55. being the only person of color on the teams.
  56. Um So for many for me, it felt like it
  57. was always hard for me to fit in with the
  58. other girls that I was playing with because I was
  59. always kind of the outcast.
  60. Um this experience continued as I made it to high
  61. school. Um and I was often one of the very
  62. few people of color in my Ap classes.
  63. This is something that I feel a lot of us
  64. can relate to.
  65. Um, so to kind of combat this feeling of just
  66. being out of place, me and my parents joined together
  67. to create our, our high schools First Black Student Union
  68. and just in 2020, um, in this club acted as
  69. a safe place for all students to feel comfortable, welcome
  70. and united.
  71. Um, so going up, these are some things that I've
  72. learned. Um, I spent a lot of time attempting to
  73. find a way to fit in with the students that
  74. were around me, who had more materialistic items than I
  75. did. Um, I felt that, um, the only way I
  76. would be able to fit in with them um, was
  77. if I had the items that they had, and again,
  78. a lot of these students were white.
  79. So truly, I, I wish I knew that I was
  80. never really going to fit in with them.
  81. Um My mother played a large role in helping me
  82. become more confident and comfortable with myself as I grew
  83. up. She taught me that items and money do not
  84. define who you are as a person.
  85. This, her teaching me, this allowed me to reflect on
  86. the person I was trying to be and help me
  87. take a step back and look at how this was
  88. really affecting me in my self esteem.
  89. Um, so after this I started to work on myself
  90. and I tried to do anything I could become comfortable
  91. with myself, my skin and my background.
  92. Um So I would no longer feel like I needed
  93. to be someone I wasn't and then all of this
  94. taught me uh to be your own person, even if
  95. it may be hard, which is something that I'm doing
  96. a lot better with.
  97. And of course I still have some times where I
  98. struggle with it, but I'm doing a lot better.
  99. And the nearest some pictures of me growing up um
  100. there's a picture of me and my older sister were
  101. very younger and then here's a picture bright beside that
  102. is a picture of me with some of the other
  103. founding members of the Bs you at john Hanley high
  104. School and then below the picture of me and my
  105. sister is a picture of me and my cousins.
  106. Um We were at the beach, there was a very
  107. long time ago clearly, and then right beside that is
  108. a picture of me in Pre K.
  109. So since I grew up on the more poor side
  110. of town, there was a lot of diversity in my
  111. pre K classes.
  112. But then as I got to high school in middle
  113. school, I started going to schools and the more richards
  114. parts of town, which then was a complete different shift
  115. to being dominantly white students.
  116. Um So growing up, my parents were separated um but
  117. they were never divorced, so they were never married, but
  118. I still went through a separation with them, um, of
  119. a sort, so do do this.
  120. Me and my sister spent the majority of our childhood
  121. traveling between our mother's house and my father's house.
  122. Um, my older sister has a different dead than I
  123. do, but we still work together all the time traveling
  124. between the two houses.
  125. Um, my father's time in the military ultimately led him
  126. to picking up poor habits to ease his PTSD, which
  127. for him, his biggest, uh, challenges his drinking.
  128. So this caused our relationship to window as I got
  129. older since I didn't completely understand his situation and what
  130. he was battling through.
  131. Um, and then I was an accountant.
  132. My mother was able to provide for me and my
  133. siblings a comfortable lifestyle even when we still had time
  134. to struggle as we were moving up to the more
  135. middle class, middle economic class.
  136. Um, so due to my mother moving up a class,
  137. um, we, I was able to get the chance to
  138. see my world beyond my neighborhood as I just showed
  139. in a couple of pictures I've gotten the takeoff, good
  140. amount of, um, a good amount of trips with me
  141. and my family.
  142. So a couple more things that I've learned.
  143. Um, the first one is loving myself is the key
  144. to happiness, which again is something that I still struggle
  145. with. But um, I'm learning that if you're able to
  146. accept and love yourself, the world is the world in
  147. life is going to be a lot easier.
  148. Um another thing is to be grateful for what my
  149. parents provide and the lessons that they teach at the
  150. time. It might, when your parents are trying to teach
  151. you a lesson, it might, you might want to blow
  152. over it, but I'm still learning that a lot of
  153. the times they do know what they're talking about.
  154. So it's a good thing to listen to them.
  155. Um the whole um situation with my parents being separated
  156. and going through their troubles, taught me that I am
  157. a strong independent person and at times when I need
  158. to be, I can act as a caretaker, whether it's
  159. for myself or for any of my siblings around me.
  160. Um something else is being able to forgive those who
  161. have wronged you, so who've wronged uses to strength.
  162. So this was something that I struggled with growing up
  163. with my father.
  164. Um his drinking had put a strain on our family
  165. and um it led to us having a pretty bad
  166. relationship as I've said, but after learning about what he's
  167. been through and forgiving him, we've started be started to
  168. have a really a lot better relationship.
  169. Um and the last one is to be kind and
  170. understanding, you never know what internal shovels a person is
  171. facing. So then I included my foundation.
  172. So these are just some little things I like to
  173. live by.
  174. Um the first one is help those in need, Everyone
  175. should have the right to love who they want to
  176. love, ignorance is what blocks a lot of people from
  177. progression. So ignorance is what blocks a lot of people
  178. from just moving forward and building with one another.
  179. Um, at the end of the day, we're all just
  180. humans, so why spend time and spend our lives, which
  181. is so much hate because at the end of the
  182. day we're just all humans.
  183. Um loving yourself can be the most difficult thing to
  184. do, but as 100% the most needed and then finally
  185. we all have an impact, so it's important to make
  186. yours a positive one.
  187. And finally I wanted to include some of my successes
  188. and challenges that I have in life.
  189. So the first one from my successes is that um
  190. I made a difference in my city through the black
  191. student union.
  192. Um, after creating this club with some of my peers,
  193. um we got a lot of positive feedback from the
  194. students saying that they felt as if they finally had
  195. a place where they could just be themselves and have
  196. a space where they can relate to others.
  197. And again, this club isn't just for black students, it's
  198. for anybody who wanted to join, so it was just
  199. a safe space for all of us to just be
  200. able to just come together and talk honestly.
  201. Um another success is learning that our best tools, our
  202. ears, so listen to others and try your best to
  203. understand. It makes life a lot easier.
  204. Um discovering my values and my motivations is something that
  205. I consider a success.
  206. Um even though I'm only 18, I know I saw
  207. some time to change and grow, but I think as
  208. of right now I have a pretty good set of
  209. morals and values.
  210. Um so another one is I'm there for my family
  211. in their time of need and I built a better
  212. relationship with my father and then my identities allow me
  213. to accept and value those around me.
  214. So for my challenges, um as I've touched on a
  215. couple of times and throughout this presentation, my biggest one
  216. I definitely definitely have to say is my lack of
  217. confidence, whether it be physically mentally or emotionally, um it's
  218. something that I feel has held me back, but as
  219. I've said earlier, I'm definitely trying to do better and
  220. then finally is my stubbornness.
  221. Once I make up my mind, it's hard to persuade
  222. me into something different.
  223. So this is it for my presentation, I hope you
  224. enjoy
