00:01 - 00:02
Hi, everyone.
00:02 - 00:04
I hope that this short guide would give you an insight
00:04 - 00:08
into what studying are often design will entail at senior cycle.
00:09 - 00:11
Thank you for considering art as an option.
00:11 - 00:14
Maybe you have studied art at junior cycle,
00:14 - 00:18
or maybe you are considering picking it up, and that was totally doable.
00:18 - 00:21
But I strongly encourage you to come and have a chat with me about your dress.
00:23 - 00:24
Over the next couple of minutes,
00:24 - 00:27
I will take you through the core structure and how you would be assessed
00:27 - 00:32
the visual studies practical. So these components on, then a few points on why
00:32 - 00:37
studying art is beneficial on what career opportunities you may have.
00:45 - 00:49
So the course course structure, as you can see, is broken into three elements.
00:50 - 00:52
I will go into each of these elements in more detail later,
00:52 - 00:57
but essentially the practical work makes up 70% of your grade.
00:57 - 00:59
On the written element is 30%.
00:59 - 01:02
A lot of students have been put off studying art of senior cycle
01:02 - 01:05
in the past because they believe there is a lot of history involved.
01:06 - 01:10
But what I can tell you is we study a small number of very specific topics
01:10 - 01:13
and try to integrate the theory side into your practical
01:13 - 01:14
as much as possible.
01:14 - 01:17
This will make it more fun and engaging for you.
01:17 - 01:21
Engagement with Arctic in person is a huge part of the course
01:21 - 01:22
Beit
01:22 - 01:26
visiting local examples, gallery trips to Dublin or even abroad
01:27 - 01:29
and also visiting artists that will come and
01:29 - 01:31
share their practise with us in the past.
01:32 - 01:36
So let's take a little look at what the written element looks like. First
01:45 - 01:48
Visual Studies was previously known as the History of Art.
01:50 - 01:52
It is the written component of the leading surgeon,
01:52 - 01:55
but it aims to integrate practical and theoretical elements too.
01:55 - 01:59
So it should go hand in hand with your practical work
01:59 - 02:04
on. Inform your choices in material on do your concepts.
02:07 - 02:09
There are three content areas.
02:09 - 02:12
Europe on the wider world, Ireland and its place in the wild,
02:12 - 02:15
wider world on then Contin area three.
02:15 - 02:15
Today's work
02:16 - 02:20
on your leaving cert paper. You will have three sections
02:20 - 02:21
under each of those titles.
02:24 - 02:28
So the good thing about this course is, although that sounds quite broad,
02:29 - 02:31
you only have to study one area
02:32 - 02:33
from
02:33 - 02:37
Constant Terry, 11 area from content Area two
02:37 - 02:40
and then you have to study all areas in content area three.
02:40 - 02:43
So let's have a little look at what each of those entails.
02:44 - 02:46
So content Area one.
02:46 - 02:48
You can see there are six topics.
02:49 - 02:53
We only have to choose one, but we have to know that one topic in detail.
02:53 - 02:57
So usually with 50 years, I would do realism on Impressionism,
02:57 - 03:02
but that would be dictated by the consensus in the cost.
03:02 - 03:04
So if there's a particular
03:05 - 03:09
draw to post or 19 sixties art,
03:09 - 03:10
then that's absolute.
03:10 - 03:13
Finally, we will study that will go with the consensus in the class.
03:16 - 03:20
So they say we only study one section from those six,
03:25 - 03:27
so contact area, too.
03:28 - 03:31
And this is art in Ireland and its place in the wider world.
03:32 - 03:35
From these six options here,
03:35 - 03:37
we usually choose one or you only have to study one as well.
03:37 - 03:39
We usually choose
03:39 - 03:43
pre Christian art in Ireland on this is because if you studied
03:43 - 03:47
art for junior cycle, you may well have covered
03:47 - 03:50
Sorry history for junior cycle. You may well have covered
03:51 - 03:53
quite a lot of the topics that are in here, so
03:54 - 03:57
I find that the knowledge coming into six years actually quite good in this section,
03:58 - 04:02
even just general knowledge from having maybe visited New Grange
04:03 - 04:04
and
04:05 - 04:07
we'll help inform your study in this area.
04:07 - 04:11
So for precaution, Ireland, That's the Stone Age, The Bronze Age on the Iron Age,
04:11 - 04:15
eh? So you would pick one topic from that list on again.
04:15 - 04:19
You would know it in detail in preparation for your leaving cert written paper
04:26 - 04:31
on lastly content Area three. We have to study all sections in this
04:32 - 04:35
in a constant area, so artists, theory and thinking,
04:36 - 04:38
artists processing, media artist,
04:38 - 04:42
social commentary or commentator on art and environment.
04:42 - 04:45
Now this is a new addition to
04:45 - 04:49
the Leaving cert as of this year. So this year's current fifth years are
04:49 - 04:53
the first to experience this content area.
04:53 - 04:58
I have to say it is a great way of exposing you to
04:58 - 05:01
what life as an artist today would be like.
05:01 - 05:06
So it's great preparation for life beyond leaving cert
05:06 - 05:09
art features to study at university
05:09 - 05:11
gives you great exposure to
05:12 - 05:13
contemporary art and artists,
05:14 - 05:17
so it's ah, a nice topic to have.
05:17 - 05:20
It's not as heavy history based, obviously as the other two.
05:24 - 05:30
For example, street art on local sculpture is a section within this.
05:35 - 05:38
Okay, so that's the visual studies on the three areas.
05:38 - 05:40
So just repeat one section
05:41 - 05:42
from each content area.
05:42 - 05:46
One content very two on then all sections from content area through
05:46 - 05:49
and they make up the written paper that you will take fairly concert
05:50 - 05:52
so on to practical cities
05:54 - 05:57
as a result of Corbett on time away from the classroom.
05:57 - 06:00
Your exposure to the variety of disciplines available in art
06:00 - 06:02
may be limited so far,
06:02 - 06:04
so if he chooses to the Arctic senior cycle,
06:04 - 06:08
you will be encouraged to pursue areas of interest to you.
06:09 - 06:12
And you will be given the autonomy to direct your own learning
06:13 - 06:14
some of the disciplines.
06:14 - 06:18
You may wish to try our picture here, but there are many more.
06:18 - 06:21
With the implementation of the new course,
06:21 - 06:23
Digital media's are now in acceptable medium to work in
06:24 - 06:26
for a living, sir Project.
06:26 - 06:29
So perhaps you have a personal interest in animation, digital drawing,
06:29 - 06:30
film or photography.
06:31 - 06:32
These air now a lve ia bill mediums.
06:33 - 06:35
But maybe you're more traditionally minded
06:35 - 06:37
on would prefer to explore calligraphy,
06:37 - 06:38
printmaking or sculpture.
06:39 - 06:41
The choice is yours.
06:41 - 06:44
Drawing will be an integral part to this course,
06:44 - 06:48
But don't panic if you if you think that you're drawing skills are not backward
06:48 - 06:51
interest, you will learn lots of tips and tricks
06:51 - 06:52
to help you prove.
06:53 - 06:56
But there really is a discipline in our
06:56 - 06:59
student to everybody's individual style and ability.
07:00 - 07:02
So I'm just going to take you through, what,
07:03 - 07:06
fifth and six you will look like in terms of practical work.
07:06 - 07:09
So in fifth year, we spend it exploring and learning new media.
07:10 - 07:13
Now, depending on what you have already explored
07:13 - 07:15
in junior cycle,
07:15 - 07:16
we will take that into consideration
07:17 - 07:20
s O year on year. The projects will be different.
07:21 - 07:23
For example, this year's fifth year
07:23 - 07:25
are exploring line oh, coding.
07:26 - 07:29
Whereas I know that current third years have already done that
07:30 - 07:36
in six year, then your practical project. We received that in January.
07:36 - 07:38
So you're given a set theme very much like how
07:38 - 07:40
you're giving us that theme for your junior cycle.
07:41 - 07:44
You'll create a body of work in response to that theme
07:44 - 07:47
using the exam workbook structure
07:47 - 07:48
again.
07:48 - 07:50
It's very similar to the Examiner book structure
07:50 - 07:52
that you will have experienced that junior cycle.
07:52 - 07:54
If you if you'd taken that course
07:55 - 07:57
your first final peace
07:57 - 07:59
is made in class.
07:59 - 08:04
The workbook on the final piece that that makes up the 50%
08:04 - 08:05
practical grade
08:05 - 08:09
Second final peace is made during an individual ated example.
08:09 - 08:10
Not second final piece
08:10 - 08:14
will be in a medium of your choice, but that is
08:14 - 08:16
20% of your final grade
08:16 - 08:17
on then.
08:17 - 08:17
Finally,
08:17 - 08:23
you must write a short artist statement based on both final pieces that you've made.
08:24 - 08:28
Okay, so I hope that gives you an insight to what 5th and 6th year would look like.
08:33 - 08:36
Lastly, just a couple of points and why I think you should study apart.
08:37 - 08:39
There are many reasons to study it. Often.
08:39 - 08:43
The first to come to mind are opportunities for self expression, self exploration,
08:43 - 08:45
a chance to broaden your horizons,
08:45 - 08:47
build mental focus,
08:47 - 08:49
physical dexterity or to reduce stress
08:50 - 08:52
and the increased enjoyment of learning.
08:53 - 08:55
It is the highest achieving
08:55 - 08:57
subject area for honours results.
08:58 - 09:00
Hitch ones can be difficult to come by,
09:00 - 09:05
but with a large practical component completed by April in six year,
09:05 - 09:07
it will alleviate the workload for examination.
09:07 - 09:08
In do.
09:12 - 09:15
There are many career paths to take with art.
09:15 - 09:19
You're considering going to art college. You will need to prepare portfolio of work
09:19 - 09:21
as well as obtained the right points.
09:21 - 09:24
Some of the pathways you mid may wish to consider our
09:24 - 09:29
graphic Web game set product, costume or fashion design,
09:31 - 09:37
photography, curator, historian, architect, film production, advertising,
09:37 - 09:41
animation, teaching Or you may wish to become a practising artist.
09:42 - 09:45
This may be a discussion that you're having with your parents,
09:45 - 09:49
as art can sometimes be negatively perceived as a low paying pathway.
09:49 - 09:50
So let's
09:50 - 09:52
take a look at some real life artists
09:53 - 09:54
and
09:54 - 09:58
and see exactly what life is. An artist today is like
10:00 - 10:03
two of these examples happen to be people that I went to college with myself
10:04 - 10:07
on. All three are local to the area.
10:07 - 10:12
They're also all in their thirties on how very successful careers
10:12 - 10:15
in art where no two days of work are the same.
10:16 - 10:17
The first is
10:24 - 10:24
Anil
10:24 - 10:26
Illustrator. Sorry.
10:29 - 10:30
First up is Debbie Smith.
10:31 - 10:34

10:34 - 10:38
She works for a lot of really big corporations, often installing
10:38 - 10:41
large scale artworks in the lobbies of their headquarters.
10:41 - 10:43
Some of the biggest names that she's worked
10:43 - 10:46
for include the New York Times and added US
10:54 - 10:56
next up is Laura Callahan.
10:57 - 11:00
Laura is now based in Belfast, which originally from Dundalk.
11:03 - 11:04
She's a freelance illustrator,
11:04 - 11:08
and her most recent works include a set of paintings for peaky blinders, blinders.
11:11 - 11:13
She's actually on the visuals to these course,
11:19 - 11:20
and lastly,
11:21 - 11:24
this guy's work you may well recognise or perhaps have even climbed on
11:24 - 11:29
in Rossmore Park. This is Mark Kelly, who is from EMI Deal,
11:29 - 11:33
and he's recently made the trophies for a junkie. Jer
11:33 - 11:34
Andre
11:34 - 11:38
has even worked on the set of Game of Thrones as a proper artist.
11:44 - 11:48
I hope that you will agree that all three examples here are
11:49 - 11:54
have exciting lifestyles, as as a little making a living out of another.
11:57 - 12:00
I hope you'll agree all three examples there are.
12:03 - 12:05
I hope that you will agree.
12:05 - 12:09
The three young artists are fine examples of how exciting life as an artist. Maybe
12:11 - 12:14
if you're worried about career paths and you realise
12:17 - 12:18
I hope that you agree,
12:18 - 12:23
the three young artists are fine examples of how exciting life is an artist.
12:23 - 12:26
Maybe on that, if you're worried about career path options, you know,
12:26 - 12:29
I realise that there are wealth of possibilities for you.
12:29 - 12:30
If you choose art,
12:30 - 12:34
even if you're sure that you want to study something else at third level,
12:34 - 12:36
Having Art Isaly concert subject will demonstrate
12:36 - 12:38
a different set of skills that will complement
12:39 - 12:40
