00:01 - 00:01
Hi there.
00:01 - 00:04
This is Courtney and I'm from Rainbow Day Camp, but
00:04 - 00:07
I'm here today, sharing with you my top theater games.
00:07 - 00:09
So before it gets started, you want to know why
00:10 - 00:10
you're playing the game.
00:10 - 00:11
What's the point of it?
00:11 - 00:13
Are you trying to get your campers to focus?
00:14 - 00:16
Are you trying to get your campers to build energy
00:16 - 00:18
or possibly waste some of that crazy energy?
00:19 - 00:20
Is it an icebreaker game?
00:20 - 00:21
Are you just working on some teamwork?
00:22 - 00:23
You want them to get to know each other?
00:24 - 00:25
Is it a little bit more specific?
00:25 - 00:26
Is it a scene work game?
00:27 - 00:29
Is it a character driven game where they to create
00:30 - 00:30
and develop characters?
00:31 - 00:32
Is it an improv game?
00:33 - 00:34
And if it's an improv game, you want to make
00:34 - 00:37
sure you know how well the campers sort of know
00:37 - 00:37
each other.
00:38 - 00:40
You want to know their level of improv, and you
00:40 - 00:41
kind of want to know how old they are before
00:41 - 00:43
you start throwing some improv games at them.
00:43 - 00:46
So one of my first games, it's called Sound and
00:46 - 00:48
Action. It's a bit of a thinking on your feet
00:49 - 00:49
game. It's an ice breaker.
00:50 - 00:51
You're working as a team but it's really just getting
00:52 - 00:53
silly and getting out there.
00:53 - 00:56
So in a really large circle, one camper is going
00:56 - 00:58
to go up to another Campo, not touching it for
00:58 - 00:59
us. And they do a sound and inaction.
01:00 - 01:01
Yo Wow!
01:03 - 01:04
Other camper has to copy it yellow.
01:05 - 01:08
Wow! Then that new camper runs up to a brand
01:09 - 01:11
new camper and gives them a brand new action and
01:11 - 01:13
sound. I try really hard not to get them to
01:13 - 01:15
use real words, but it's great because they're learning to
01:15 - 01:18
give and take, and they just build that energy and
01:18 - 01:19
build that silliness.
01:20 - 01:23
The second game is called Tableau Wars, so I break
01:23 - 01:24
them into groups of four or five.
01:24 - 01:27
Campers could be more, and they're going to create a
01:27 - 01:28
tableau for me.
01:28 - 01:29
But I'm not going to give them very much time
01:30 - 01:30
to do it.
01:30 - 01:31
So they're working on characters.
01:31 - 01:32
They're working on focus.
01:32 - 01:34
They're working together as a team, and they're kind of
01:35 - 01:37
improv working on their feet, so I might yell something
01:37 - 01:39
else. Like, I want to see a picture of Frankenstein
01:40 - 01:42
going to the dentist and within 10 seconds they need
01:43 - 01:47
to create that tableau and then they freeze and I'm
01:47 - 01:49
looking for things like facial expressions levels.
01:50 - 01:51
How well they can focus and freeze.
01:52 - 01:53
Are they giving me a focus that I know what
01:53 - 01:55
I'm looking at and how well they're working together?
01:56 - 01:57
It's a great fun game to play.
01:58 - 02:01
Third One is yes, let's So it's an introduction to
02:01 - 02:04
improv and saying yes and working always together and giving
02:04 - 02:04
that positivity.
02:05 - 02:07
So they're walking around the space and one camper.
02:08 - 02:10
I don't decide to who they decide yells, Hey, everybody,
02:11 - 02:14
let's pretend we're fishing and everyone goes Yes, let's pretend
02:15 - 02:17
we're fishing so they start mining that action.
02:18 - 02:21
Then someone else says, Hey, everybody, let's pretend we're chickens
02:21 - 02:24
and they all go, Yeah, let's pretend we're chickens and
02:25 - 02:27
they keep mining that new action and you keep going
02:27 - 02:30
and going and going until almost everyone's had to turn
02:30 - 02:31
to yellowed a Hey, everybody.
02:32 - 02:34
The next game is making a machine, so it's an
02:35 - 02:36
oldie but a goodie, and you can play with small
02:36 - 02:38
groups or large groups and whatever you want.
02:38 - 02:41
So I start with one camper, making an action in
02:41 - 02:44
the sound people, people, people, something that they can keep
02:45 - 02:47
going for a little while and then another keeper.
02:47 - 02:49
Ads add action town Action town in a non Kobe
02:50 - 02:52
dear, I have them actually touching and creating this amazing
02:52 - 02:55
machine. And then when I have enough campers, I'm gonna
02:55 - 02:56
make the machine go faster.
02:56 - 02:57
Then I'm gonna make the machine go slower.
02:58 - 03:00
Then I'm gonna freeze the machine and ask it questions
03:00 - 03:01
like, What does it do?
03:01 - 03:02
What's its name?
03:02 - 03:03
How much money does it cost?
03:04 - 03:06
And you can keep on creating brandish machines and keep
03:06 - 03:07
on going.
03:08 - 03:11
The next game is simple seen style, or I call
03:11 - 03:12
it making soup.
03:12 - 03:14
So I start off with a very simple seen mine
03:14 - 03:15
is about making soup.
03:15 - 03:16
Hence the name.
03:16 - 03:19
I need three actors and I teach them this very
03:19 - 03:19
simple seat.
03:20 - 03:20
So it goes like this.
03:20 - 03:22
One character is making soup.
03:22 - 03:24
And another character, Watson says, Hello.
03:25 - 03:27
Hello. What are you doing?
03:27 - 03:28
I'm making soup.
03:29 - 03:31
What kind of soup is it today?
03:32 - 03:33
Chicken noodle soup.
03:33 - 03:34
Or can I try?
03:34 - 03:38
Some? Sure gives the soup, she tries it, and diet
03:39 - 03:40
is a big dramatic death.
03:41 - 03:43
Where the name comes, the doctor checks them in a
03:43 - 03:45
really funny way and says she's dead.
03:46 - 03:48
So the scene is very simple It's a beginning of
03:48 - 03:50
improv, but we're giving them the words we're giving them
03:51 - 03:53
the direction we're giving them something so they don't feel
03:53 - 03:54
so thrown on the spot.
03:54 - 03:56
But the fun part about this game is now you're
03:56 - 03:57
going to change that style.
03:57 - 04:00
They do the exact same scenes, the same concept, similar
04:01 - 04:02
words. But now I want to see the scene like
04:03 - 04:06
robots or see it like cowboys or see it like
04:06 - 04:09
ballerinas. And every time they have to do the scene
04:09 - 04:11
differently, but almost the same, it's really fun.
04:12 - 04:14
The next one is called back to neutral, so I
04:14 - 04:17
tell my actors this my state of neutral, a blank
04:17 - 04:20
canvas. This one's more about focus and character work and
04:20 - 04:21
really focusing on what they're doing.
04:22 - 04:24
So they walk around the space and neutral color, and
04:24 - 04:27
I want to see everyone who are being really silly,
04:27 - 04:29
maybe a super super silly back to neutral.
04:30 - 04:31
Now I want to see how you walk.
04:31 - 04:32
When you're very, very late.
04:32 - 04:34
They're running late and back to neutral this'll.
04:35 - 04:37
When you can play with characters, you could play with
04:37 - 04:39
emotions. You play with many different things, and you can
04:39 - 04:40
keep it going for quite a while.
04:40 - 04:43
The last one How I end every rehearsal and camp
04:44 - 04:44
day is my shakedown.
04:45 - 04:47
They go from quiet toe loud and build and shake
04:47 - 04:49
and shake and shake and shake and shake until 50543215
04:52 - 04:53
you want you want to do it one.
04:54 - 04:55
And on the end of the day.
04:56 - 04:57
Thank you so much for joining me today, and I
04:57 - 04:59
hope you had some fun for my quick theater games
05:00 - 05:00
