00:00 - 00:01
Hello everyone.
00:01 - 00:03
My name is CHad Loudoun and I am the author
00:03 - 00:04
of discomfort by design.
00:05 - 00:08
Uh from this book I designed this course called problem
00:09 - 00:11
solving by design for every classroom.
00:11 - 00:14
I could not be more excited about being on this
00:14 - 00:16
journey with you as we strive for growth.
00:17 - 00:20
As related to problem solving in the classroom.
00:22 - 00:25
I think it's important that you understand the reasoning and
00:25 - 00:26
the application of this course.
00:27 - 00:30
I noticed a trend many years ago of my students
00:31 - 00:34
in my classroom lacking essential problem solving and critical thinking
00:35 - 00:39
skills and relying way too heavily on technology to meet
00:39 - 00:41
the challenges presented in school.
00:42 - 00:46
I saw students doing everything they could to try to
00:46 - 00:50
avoid um situations that required them to step outside of
00:50 - 00:50
their comfort zone.
00:51 - 00:54
Now having done my very best to avoid uncomfortable situations
00:55 - 00:58
my entire life yet experiencing some of the most trying
00:59 - 01:02
challenges life has I decided to put my personal and
01:03 - 01:06
my professional experiences and expertise into this book.
01:07 - 01:11
Yeah. Some insight as to what I want for you
01:11 - 01:11
from this class.
01:12 - 01:13
I want you to tell you I want to take
01:13 - 01:15
you out of your comfort zone of how you think
01:16 - 01:18
schools should be and make you aware of how it
01:19 - 01:22
could be when you implement problem solving by design.
01:23 - 01:24
I want you to work with the support of community
01:25 - 01:28
that is working toward the same uncomfortable goal I want
01:29 - 01:31
to know about and learn from all of your experiences,
01:32 - 01:34
both the good and the bad as they relate to
01:35 - 01:36
the topics of each module.
01:37 - 01:39
And I want you to feel some autonomy with some
01:39 - 01:42
choices as we commit to each step of the process
01:43 - 01:48
to meet each challenge in every module, each module follows.
01:49 - 01:51
Um what I like to think of as a modified
01:52 - 01:52
problem solving process.
01:53 - 01:57
So not only are we going to talk about problem
01:57 - 01:59
solving, we're also going to commit to a process of
02:00 - 02:03
problem solving every single module and it begins with what
02:03 - 02:05
I call a call to action challenge here.
02:05 - 02:09
You're going to realize why meeting these challenges is important
02:09 - 02:13
and exactly what you will produce every module next.
02:14 - 02:17
I want to provide some opportunities for you to gather
02:17 - 02:20
information that can assist you in meeting the challenges of
02:21 - 02:21
the module.
02:21 - 02:24
Some may call this research or exploration.
02:26 - 02:28
Um We want to call it exploring for knowledge.
02:29 - 02:30
This could be a Youtube video.
02:31 - 02:33
It could be an excerpt from discomfort by design.
02:34 - 02:36
It could be a reading from a website or it
02:36 - 02:39
could be a primary source from a from a journal.
02:41 - 02:44
Now after you've gathered some information, it's time to work
02:44 - 02:46
that brain and come up with some ideas.
02:46 - 02:49
Now there are several different ways that we could do
02:49 - 02:52
this. Um I think that some of us like to
02:52 - 02:55
meet with the creator of these courses um and discuss
02:55 - 02:57
the ideas through a synchronous meeting.
02:58 - 03:01
So I will provide some office hours a couple of
03:01 - 03:02
times per week through zoom.
03:02 - 03:05
If anyone would like to meet and ask some questions
03:05 - 03:08
or discuss some ideas, there will also be this option
03:09 - 03:12
without the course creator present for those of you who
03:12 - 03:15
would rather discuss these ideas and thoughts in a more
03:16 - 03:16
private setting.
03:16 - 03:20
And then finally there is an asynchronous padlock discussion board
03:21 - 03:24
for those who would prefer this method that is not
03:24 - 03:25
tied to a specific time.
03:26 - 03:28
So you can participate in any or all of these.
03:29 - 03:31
Just remember that we're trying to come up with as
03:32 - 03:36
many possible solutions to our to our challenges as we
03:36 - 03:37
can possibly come up with.
03:37 - 03:41
Um So so participate in any or all of them
03:43 - 03:47
using knowledge of the challenge, your information that you gained
03:48 - 03:48
through research.
03:49 - 03:53
Um and when through exploring um using those ideas that
03:53 - 03:55
you came up with with your supportive learning community through
03:55 - 03:59
brainstorming. Now you come up with your initial attempt at
03:59 - 04:03
meeting whatever challenge that I've presented um for that module,
04:04 - 04:07
depending on the challenge, you might create a short video,
04:07 - 04:11
you might create an audio recording, you might create a
04:11 - 04:14
text file, an infographic, or you may even pre um
04:15 - 04:17
you may even produce some kind of presentation.
04:19 - 04:22
Once you have made your initial attempt at meeting the
04:22 - 04:26
challenge of the module, let's analyze and reflect on the
04:26 - 04:29
process. This will be done in a short flip grid
04:29 - 04:31
video. I think those are about a minute and a
04:31 - 04:35
half each include your successes, but also include your struggles
04:36 - 04:37
and think of what you would do differently if you
04:38 - 04:40
were able to do that challenge again or if you
04:40 - 04:44
were able to make changes to your product, I want
04:44 - 04:47
you to commit to the process, grow through the discomfort
04:48 - 04:51
that you experience through this course, learn from and with
04:51 - 04:55
your community and earn this wonderful problem solver by design
04:56 - 04:59
badge. I look forward to working with and learning from
04:59 - 05:02
all of you as we navigate this course together.
05:02 - 05:04
Up next will be Module one.
05:05 - 05:06
I look forward to seeing you all there.
