  1. Hi my name is Theresa Macintosh and I'm gonna be presenting Addison's disease.
  2. The ideology um Addison's disease is also known
  3. as adrenal hypo function or adrenal insufficiency.
  4. There are two forms primary and secondary.
  5. It does not discriminate between gender or age. It affects everybody.
  6. If it is left untreated, it can progress into a don't add estonian crisis.
  7. It can have both genetic and environmental causes.
  8. Primary Addison's disease.
  9. Um Like I said, can have environmental and genetic causes.
  10. It is an excellent disorder.
  11. It is caused by autoimmune destruction or diseases such as infection
  12. or hemorrhagic in the kidneys um originates in their adrenal glands
  13. and it occurs when the adrenal glands cannot produce the adequate
  14. amount of hormones despite a normal or increased cord atropine level.
  15. Uh signs and symptoms include darkening of skin Ortho static hypertension,
  16. increased hair growth,
  17. increased muscle and joint pain craving of salt due
  18. to hyponatremia and decreased sex drive in women.
  19. Secondary Addison's disease originates outside the
  20. adrenal gland is commonly caused by
  21. a pituitary tumor or from prolonged exogenous glucose glucose cortisol korda.
  22. Coid administration or inadequate treatment of hyper cortisol is um
  23. symptoms are similar of primary um Addison's disease except for
  24. the skin pigment changes rarely occur and there's less gi
  25. upset um symptoms of hypoglycemia are more common with secondary
  26. um Addison's disease and these symptoms of hypoglycemia include sweating,
  27. anxiety, shaking, nausea, heart palpitations.
  28. Path of physiology.
  29. The decreased cortisol production initially followed by that of valdosta rone,
  30. both of which eventually results in the elevation of adrenal,
  31. Corta tropic and melanocytes stimulating hormone
  32. risk factors include gender destruction of adrenal cortex and adenomas
  33. as far as gender is most common in women.
  34. Um And it's an excellent disorder,
  35. destruction of
  36. the
  37. um
  38. adrenal cortex. It can be both idiopathic or autoimmune.
  39. Um Over 90% of the adrenal gland will be destroyed on both kidneys and it can
  40. be caused by infection or it could be a hemorrhagic cause or it can be unknown.
  41. Um This diagram just shows the um destruction
  42. based on the auto immune cells activating the t
  43. the auto reactive t cells which then
  44. um activate macrophages which lead to cell apoptosis.
  45. Um A third cause or adenomas.
  46. These adenomas are primarily on the anterior pituitary gland.
  47. Um It is a loss of the A. C.
  48. Th secretion which results in the reduction of glucose Kordic oid production.
  49. Um When this happens you'll see that mineral
  50. Kordic oid secretion including out dust Arone,
  51. remain at relatively normal levels.
  52. So for clinical manifestation of Addison's disease you'll see um
  53. a spike and stress um Weight loss, easily fatigued weakness.
  54. Um Salt cravings due to low sodium size
  55. um darkening of the skin, decreased sex drive.
  56. Um And then you test with um a cortisol test or a c.
  57. Th stimulation test which would indicate low cortisol levels.
  58. Um nausea vomiting are primarily seen with primary Addison's disease
  59. and these are my references
