  1. Good morning Peace Fellowship family
  2. for those who don't know me or if you're working with us the very first time,
  3. my name is Pastor Delonte Gholston, I serve as
  4. the lead pastor here. Peace Fellowship Church.
  5. We're so glad that you joined us this morning for worship.
  6. I want to give a special shout out to Minister Jeremy Berkeley
  7. and his team for leading us in musical worship this morning.
  8. What a wonderful job.
  9. What a wonderful way to bring us into the presence of God this morning.
  10. I'm so grateful
  11. to God for you and your team, especially for filling in for minister jo
  12. as as minister Zhou and qi laura takes some time of rest and recuperation
  13. and recovery
  14. this week we're praying for you low
  15. praying for you. Minister jo
  16. God will fully heal
  17. and be present with you right now
  18. and and and and every day
  19. we thank God we thank
  20. well, it's good to be together, beloved. Um
  21. you may have noticed that I'm wearing a hoodie
  22. this morning.
  23. I'm not,
  24. I'm not wearing my hoodie because because it's cold or because of snow last night.
  25. I'm not wearing it as a fashion statement
  26. this morning, I'm reminded
  27. that last week was
  28. the birthday of Trayvon martin
  29. who we know was killed
  30. florida
  31. by George Zimmerman
  32. 2013.
  33. So I I wanted to honor his birthday. He would have been 27 years old
  34. on his birthday. I wanted to honor him.
  35. I also wanted to take a moment to honor
  36. the life of Sandra Bland as well
  37. Who also had a birthday this past week, she would have been 35 years old.
  38. So before we move on
  39. to the preaching moment,
  40. but it would
  41. not robbery, not be robbery for us.
  42. Take a moment
  43. Black history month to just pause and to and to remember
  44. hold some space and some silence.
  45. I love ones
  46. many of home
  47. continue
  48. to greed
  49. as the process is a long process of healing for each of us.
  50. We heard just this past week, of course the sentencing of the vigilante killers
  51. of a modern library as well.
  52. And so we want to
  53. just hold a moment of silence
  54. for
  55. the life of Trayvon martin, Sandra bland and so many others
  56. we've lost in this season.
  57. You'll you'll see the words of Ella jo baker
  58. That which that were out of the 1964
  59. just as true then as they are today,
  60. she simply says, until the killing of black
  61. men,
  62. black mothers sons
  63. becomes as important to the rest of the country as the killing of white mothers sons.
  64. We believe in freedom
  65. cannot rest until that happens.
  66. And I would answer that until the killing of
  67. black women,
  68. black trans
  69. loved ones
  70. to the killing of all black
  71. lives, two homicides and our streets. Until those into those murders matter
  72. just as much as
  73. Arora, just as much as Newtown in every town,
  74. right?
  75. We who believe in freedom
  76. cannot rest.
  77. Let's hold a moment
  78. of silence
  79. for all those
  80. who will be lost and simply recognize that all Black lives matter.
  81. Amen.
  82. Amen
  83. for those who
  84. we're journeying with us. Last week we started a series
  85. for Black History month and we're simply calling
  86. that series, basking in the beauty
  87. of Blackness,
  88. basking in the beauty
  89. Blackness.
  90. I would invite you to open your bibles, your tablet,
  91. your cellphones and journey with me as we
  92. turn to the word of God for the people of God.
  93. This morning there is a word from God for the people of God
  94. that's found in
  95. no callbacks.
  96. We're going to read
  97. In the 8th chapter.
  98. What thus sayeth the Lord,
  99. agree with me.
  100. Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip
  101. get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.
  102. This is a wilderness road.
  103. Somebody say wilderness road.
  104. So we got up and went
  105. and now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the canvas,
  106. Queen of the Ethiopians in charge of her treasury.
  107. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home,
  108. seated in his chariot. He was reading the prophet Isaiah
  109. and then the Spirit said to Philip, go over to this chariot and join it.
  110. So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah?
  111. He asked,
  112. do you understand
  113. what you are reading?
  114. He replied, How can I
  115. unless someone guides me?
  116. And he invited
  117. he being the eunuch invited Philip to get in and sit beside him
  118. and the passage of scripture that he was reading, was this
  119. like a sheep? He was led to the slaughter,
  120. and like a lamb silent before its shearers, so he does not open his mouth
  121. in his humiliation. Justice was denied him.
  122. Who can describe his generation
  123. for his life is taken away from the earth?
  124. The Union
  125. asked Philip.
  126. About whom may I ask you? Does the prophet say this
  127. about himself
  128. or about someone else?
  129. Then Philip began to speak. And starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him
  130. good news
  131. about
  132. jesus.
  133. They were going along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said,
  134. look here is some water.
  135. What is to prevent me from being baptized,
  136. command of the chariot to stop. And both of them
  137. Philip. And the eunuch
  138. went down into the water,
  139. and Philip
  140. baptized him
  141. the time that we have together this morning.
  142. Want to preach and teach. I really just want to teach.
  143. Not really lead to preach so much as teacher
  144. around the topic or subject with thought baptized into the beauty
  145. of blackness,
  146. baptized into the Beauty!
  147. Blackness
  148. won't you pray with me, Please
  149. Spirit of the living God!
  150. We need you Lord to fall a fresh upon your word.
  151. Follow pressure.
  152. Follow fresh upon thy servant,
  153. all of fresh even upon me.
  154. All the fresh upon the hearers and listeners of this
  155. word that we might be not only hearers and listeners,
  156. but do. Was also
  157. may the words of my mouth and the meditations of
  158. my heart be found to be acceptable in thy sight.
  159. Oh Lord, you are our strength and our demon
  160. in jesus name.
  161. Amen,
  162. baptized
  163. in
  164. beauty.
  165. Blackness,
  166. baptized
  167. in
  168. Beauty
  169. of
  170. blackness.
  171. As we look at our text this morning, we find ourselves
  172. in the book of luke acts, which was a two volume book
  173. that was written by, by luke, the physician, luke takes great care
  174. to make sure that we don't miss any details. He writes this book,
  175. addressing
  176. both jews and gentiles in the early
  177. church.
  178. And what I love about luke is that luke in both luke and acts.
  179. The spirit is always on the move.
  180. The spirit is always speaking, drawing
  181. God's people beyond the borders.
  182. So you'll find that in luke,
  183. you'll find more of an emphasis on class divides because
  184. the spirit is leading us to stretch across class divides.
  185. You'll find that in luke,
  186. you'll find more women mentioned in luke's gospel than any other gospel and
  187. luke's gospel. You'll find
  188. more references to the liberation
  189. uh, to a, to a gospel of liberal liberation that you'll find in any other gospel
  190. and in this particular Perica p in this particular story
  191. And in Acts Chapter eight,
  192. we find that the spirit of God that an angel of God has led Philip one of the disciples,
  193. one of the early disciples of jesus who is now an apostle
  194. of the church,
  195. you'll find that the spirit is leading,
  196. he's leading philipp
  197. to an Ethiopian
  198. uh unit.
  199. And and the first thing I want us to see or recognize in the text. As we look at the text,
  200. it says that the angel of the Lord
  201. spook
  202. to Philip and said get up and go toward the south
  203. to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza,
  204. this is a wilderness road.
  205. And so he got up and went
  206. and there was an Ethiopian unit
  207. court official of the Candace, Queen of the Ethiopians in charge
  208. of her treasury.
  209. First thing I want us to see and recognize in the text
  210. is that first, God
  211. beckons
  212. God beckons
  213. for each of us. God is still speaking. God is still calling. God
  214. beckons us
  215. when God.
  216. And one of the things I want us to know is that whenever God calls,
  217. whenever God speaks, whenever god moves whenever God ministers ministers to you,
  218. you ought to know that you are not going to be called into a comfortable place.
  219. The way that you know that God is speaking with one of
  220. the ways that we know that God is calling is that God
  221. doesn't call
  222. qualified, but God always qualifies the call
  223. when God speaks to Abraham, God says to Abraham, go to the place where I will send you,
  224. God doesn't even give abraham an address to where God is calling Abraham.
  225. But God says go to the place where I will send you
  226. God when God calls David. David is not a king.
  227. David is not even in the line of kings, but David is out tending sheep,
  228. somebody else's king.
  229. Saul is king.
  230. But God calls David and anoints David and places David into the line of kingship.
  231. Even while somebody else
  232. is on the throne, moses when he is called is a murderer.
  233. When he's called moses and nobody is a murderer, he is, he is, he is,
  234. he has transgressed the will and the law of God.
  235. But yet God calls, when paul is called paul is a terrorist paul
  236. as a persecutor of the body of christ.
  237. But God calls him
  238. anyway, when Amos is called, he's out in a field
  239. ah he's a nobody,
  240. but God calls him
  241. anyway.
  242. When Philip is called, All we know about Philip,
  243. we find in john's gospel, john's records in uh in john chapter one,
  244. verses 43 to 50 all we know about Philip is that Philip
  245. is from Bethsaida where the man is healed and where the,
  246. where the man who has an infirmity is healed
  247. at the pool of Bethsaida. All we know about Philip is that Jesus sees Philip
  248. in galilee
  249. that Jesus calls Philip and and that Philip simply responds, Jesus says,
  250. come and follow me and Phillip
  251. follows Jesus and then Philip turns around as soon as Philip
  252. is called Philip then turns around to Nathaniel and says,
  253. I want you to come and see this man from galilee.
  254. We learned two things about Philip,
  255. even though we don't really know much about Philip,
  256. we learned that Phillip is obedient to the voice of God
  257. and that Philip is ready to invite others into what he has experienced.
  258. We don't know where really much else about the life of Philip,
  259. except that when jesus calls, when God speaks,
  260. Philip
  261. responds, and not only does Philip respond when jesus says
  262. follow me, but then Philip wants to call somebody else and says come and see
  263. about what I have now experience.
  264. So that begs the question in our lives,
  265. what is God calling you
  266. to do? Where is God calling you,
  267. Philip is called. The text says that the angel of God speaks to Philip and calls
  268. phillips
  269. down a wilderness road, down a difficult path
  270. down a difficult journey to a difficult person to an Ethiopian
  271. unique.
  272. But where is God calling you? Who is God calling you to? Where is that?
  273. What is the wilderness road that God is calling you to in your life?
  274. Is God calling you to love somebody that's difficult
  275. to love?
  276. Is God calling you to to to minister to somebody or in a place that you don't want to go,
  277. is God calling you to uproot your life and to move into a season of uncertainty.
  278. Where is God beckoning you, How is God calling you?
  279. The voice of God is still speaking and this time in this text,
  280. God calls Phillip
  281. an uneducated man Philip, a man from galilee
  282. to minister to and to and to cross a divide.
  283. To minister to an educated man and to minister to a black
  284. man.
  285. As I said in luke acts, the spirit of God is always transgressing.
  286. The spirit of God is always crossing boundaries. What are the boundaries?
  287. What are the barriers that God is calling you to cross?
  288. God calls Phillip to, to to minister to Philip.
  289. What we know about Philip and all the disciples is that they're not wealthy,
  290. but yet God calls Phillip
  291. a poor man to minister to a rich man.
  292. God calls Phillip a galilean
  293. to minister to an Ethiopian.
  294. God calls Phillip a heterosexual man to minister to a eunuch.
  295. But we know here's what we know about eunuchs.
  296. What we know about eunuchs. First thing we know about eunuchs
  297. uh is that they're not welcome
  298. into
  299. the house of God.
  300. Eunuchs are those that either one of two things took place.
  301. Either they they their genitalia were crushed
  302. uh and they were made to be servants for the rest of their lives
  303. and entered into a life of servitude or servant
  304. of servant hood or servitude
  305. or
  306. they were born as intersects
  307. they were they were born with more than one sexual organ and
  308. were therefore made to be servants for for their entire lives.
  309. And so God is calling Philip God is calling
  310. Philip? The spirit? The angel of God is calling
  311. Philip to to not only cross a class barrier, not only to cross a racial barrier,
  312. but also to cross a gender
  313. Barrier. Here is what we read in Deuteronomy chapter 20
  314. three about
  315. eunuchs,
  316. No one
  317. whose testicles are crushed or whose penis is cut off,
  318. shall be admitted into the assembly
  319. of the Lord.
  320. Let's keep reading.
  321. Those born of an illicit union
  322. shall not be admitted to the assembly of the Lord.
  323. Even to the 10th generation, none of their descendants shall be admitted
  324. into
  325. the assembly
  326. of
  327. the Lord.
  328. And so here's where God beckons God
  329. Becca's. Now I I wanted to read diverse one and verse two because the truth be told
  330. if if where, whereas we may not be a eunuch, we may not have been born with
  331. multiple organs or intersects.
  332. We may not have had our testicles crushed.
  333. Um, as the text says, but many of us,
  334. we're born for what we may have,
  335. what may be described as an illicit union are in our community.
  336. Many of us are born out of wedlock and untraditional relationships and
  337. untraditional partnerships and based upon the law of
  338. moses that would have disqualified any of us
  339. from being able to enter into worship to
  340. be able to experience the fullness of worship.
  341. So before we just focus on one aspect of exclusion.
  342. Let's be able to see ourselves in the text because
  343. in most of our families, I know we have somebody,
  344. but you may not have somebody who identifies as non binary or somebody was intersex,
  345. but we most certainly have somebody in our families
  346. and we may be the one in our families.
  347. Can I get one witness
  348. who, who,
  349. who is a part of what of what the law would have thought of as an illicit union?
  350. Can I get one witnesses anybody willing to just be honest,
  351. that we ourselves would have been prevented from fellowship?
  352. And so in our text,
  353. Philip is called to this black man to this man with education and class. He's reading
  354. he has authority, He has power. He works for the Queen of Ethiopia.
  355. The canvas as she is called in that time,
  356. Philip is called to correct
  357. cross that class divide,
  358. To cross that educational divide,
  359. to cross
  360. that gender divide
  361. and to and to and to minister to
  362. this Ethiopian unit. So, first,
  363. first God beckons.
  364. But then
  365. God beckons. But I want to suggest to us that you
  366. that me that we
  367. are
  368. the bridge.
  369. Somebody say, I'm the bridge.
  370. Somebody say on the bridge,
  371. let's look at the text,
  372. text says. And the spirit, here's the spirit beckoning and calling
  373. fill up. Yet again.
  374. The spirit says to Philip go over, go over to this chariot and join it.
  375. And so Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah and asked him,
  376. do you understand what?
  377. You are reading this again.
  378. This is Philip that we found in John's Gospel, John 143 through 50,
  379. jesus says, follow me, Phillip follows right? We learned about Phillip.
  380. He's obedient to the voice of God,
  381. but not only is Philip that we learn about Philip's character,
  382. that Philip is obedient, but Philip is also an evangelist.
  383. He Philip is has the personality and is shaped and formed
  384. by God as one that as soon as he obeys God,
  385. he invites others in
  386. and so he is a bridge. God calls us according to our unique abilities.
  387. And so I want to invite you to consider the ways in which you might be a bridge.
  388. What are the ways in which you might be called to be a bridge?
  389. The spirit says go over to the chariot and join it. So Philip runs
  390. into it
  391. and and and and and and asks him, what
  392. are you, Do you understand what you are reading? He replies,
  393. How can I unless someone guides me?
  394. And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him.
  395. All right, what does it look like for us to sit in
  396. the shoes of someone that we don't know
  397. that we don't understand?
  398. What does it look like for us to sit with and to journey with
  399. someone,
  400. to walk in someone else's shoes, to journey with and to and to invite
  401. to sit with before we can welcome
  402. before we can truly uh make a move of liberation.
  403. The first thing that we're invited to do is to begin to sit with
  404. one of the most transformative experiences in my life when I
  405. was organizing with black lives matter and doing police accountability work.
  406. There was a sister transistor, her name was Chela
  407. and Stella was born and raised in the church.
  408. Uh, and Stella was born as a man but cello was trans And so she was,
  409. she was making a journey and walking out her identity
  410. as a trans woman as a black trans woman.
  411. Chelo was also uh in transitional housing. She was living living in S. R. O. Housing.
  412. Chela
  413. struggled and and and and and and
  414. and endured
  415. and was struggling with mental health
  416. challenges because of her oppression and constant
  417. victimization as being a black trans woman.
  418. But she
  419. wasn't an incredibly and is an incredibly powerful organizer
  420. in Los Angeles
  421. On the streets shallow grabbed grabbed the mic on the streets when
  422. we had an encampment for 58 days holding the LAPD accountable uh,
  423. in in in L.
  424. A.
  425. For the killing of
  426. a cell ford
  427. and many others.
  428. It was Chela who held down our encampment and our tent city and kept us
  429. organized and made sure everybody had food and make sure that people were loved on.
  430. And as we began to get to know each other myself as a, as a,
  431. as a cis gendered black man and and Chela as
  432. as as as a trans woman.
  433. I noticed that as we began to talk together and pray together,
  434. the walls began to fall down and my interpretation and understanding of scripture,
  435. I began to God began to reveal God's self to me in new ways.
  436. I can't say that I was there yet, right? I can't say that I was fully
  437. affirming and of trans people because I wasn't at that time.
  438. But what I was willing to do was to get in the chariot with
  439. with chela.
  440. What I was willing to do was ask Stella asked me questions about scripture,
  441. to give her my understanding of scripture
  442. and to hear her understanding of scripture.
  443. What I was willing to do was to respect her enough
  444. to if she wanted me to identify her with her pronouns.
  445. I learned
  446. to use the pronouns that she wanted me to use.
  447. How do they love for her? Out of the respect for out of relationship
  448. for her? And so each of us listen, I don't know where you are on the journey,
  449. right? But we have trans loved ones in Dean.
  450. Would we have non binary gender,
  451. nonconforming loved ones and our community gender nonconforming simply
  452. means that someone doesn't feel like they were born,
  453. like they are living in the body that they were born in,
  454. right? And and I would just posit this biologically for just a moment,
  455. if it is possible,
  456. if we know that it is possible
  457. For people to be born
  458. intersects with more than one
  459. Uh genitalia again with more than one sexual organ.
  460. How far fetched is it
  461. 2? Therefore believe that it is possible
  462. for someone to be born with the sense that they are living in
  463. uh in in in in the body that they were not born to live in.
  464. If we know that it is possible for someone to be born with multiple sexual organs.
  465. Is it that far of a stretch to walk with someone to get into the chariot with someone to
  466. to journey with someone
  467. who is telling you
  468. that they are experiencing
  469. gender confusion or they are experiencing
  470. not being at home
  471. in their birth body.
  472. And I would offer that that each of us should take the time
  473. to sit to get in the chariot to do what Philip did and to and to be a bridge to get
  474. into the chariot
  475. with
  476. with with the eunuchs in our midst with the
  477. with the non binary trans loved ones into sex,
  478. loved ones,
  479. gender. Nonconforming loved ones. In
  480. in our midst.
  481. Many of you have seen the movie
  482. Selma
  483. I'm wearing
  484. today. I'm wearing
  485. those. You can see I'm wearing a hoodie from E. J. I. The Equal justice initiative.
  486. I was privileged clear and our privilege to go down to Birmingham Alabama.
  487. This past week.
  488. I spent some time at 16th Street
  489. Baptist Church where the four little girls were killed
  490. in September of 19
  491. 65.
  492. We went to Selma and had the privilege of walking across the
  493. Pettis bridge
  494. spent time in Montgomery and went to the lynching
  495. the national venturing memorial.
  496. And some of you may remember
  497. the movie by Ava Duvernay Selma, that that that laid out when dr king joined with
  498. people so many faiths
  499. to cross the Edmund
  500. Pettus bridge
  501. and I was struck
  502. this myself.
  503. I was able to to walk across
  504. that bridge myself
  505. this past week.
  506. And one of the things that I was struck by as I walked with it,
  507. the team
  508. that we were with this past week
  509. was was was I felt the spirit asking me, I guess much as the spirit
  510. led Philip,
  511. I felt the spirit asking me,
  512. what are the bridges
  513. that I'm meant to cross?
  514. And who are the people that I meant to cross it with?
  515. Who are the people that I meant to cross it?
  516. Four,
  517. I want to invite you
  518. to ask yourself the same question. What does it mean for you to be the bridge?
  519. Who are the people that that God is that is beckoning you to sit in the chariot with
  520. When the spirit calls the spirit always calls us to cross the divide.
  521. When the spirit calls the spirit led Philip into the wilderness?
  522. To an Ethiopian unit across the class divide.
  523. A a gender divide, A racial divide, what are the divides?
  524. That God is calling us to, to,
  525. to to to bridge Some of the bridges will be short bridges.
  526. Some of the bridges will be long bridges
  527. as my brother Ben Mcbride, who led us on the journey.
  528. I talked about,
  529. he talked about short bridges which are bridges
  530. that that that don't require as much effort.
  531. But then they're long bridges that require a lot of effort.
  532. At the Edmund Pettus bridge was a short bridge.
  533. And and so for some of us it may be the short bridges in our lives. Might be
  534. hard conversations with dear friends or, but then for some of us, the longer bridges
  535. uh,
  536. might be the bridge around a family member that's been excluded from
  537. our family and having those difficult conversations with our loved ones.
  538. But all of us are called
  539. uh, to be
  540. the bridge. What are the bridges
  541. that you are called
  542. to cross? And and here's the thing
  543. about a bridge,
  544. You can't be a bridge unless somebody is stepping on you,
  545. you can't be a bridge unless there's traffic that's flowing over you
  546. in order for you to be a bridge,
  547. that means that traffic has got to come
  548. across you and it ought to be crossing in both directions.
  549. If you've got a bridge that only has traffic going in one direction.
  550. Right,
  551. What is the, how is the spirit calling you? How's the spirit leading you
  552. to be a bridge with traffic that's flowing
  553. and both
  554. directions
  555. because when we learned about the Ethiopian eunuch,
  556. is that even though he was prohibited by law
  557. to be in fellowship,
  558. the bible says that he was actually returning from worship. So he was still,
  559. what does the text say? The text says
  560. that he was returning
  561. from
  562. from worship.
  563. Right.
  564. It says, it says he had come
  565. to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home seated in his chariot.
  566. Right?
  567. So that means that there had been an evolution,
  568. right? Even though
  569. Deuteronomy says that the eunuch can't enter into worship
  570. by the time we get to the text, it says that he had come to Jerusalem to worship
  571. and was returning home seated in his chariot and was reading
  572. the prophet Isaiah
  573. Right?
  574. And so already a bridge had begun to be crossed.
  575. Right?
  576. So and so what does that mean?
  577. What, what are we and what is the bridge that we are invited to
  578. to cross?
  579. And so as he's reading,
  580. it's so interesting the texts that he's reading because because even
  581. though Deuteronomy says that the eunuch is not allowed into worship,
  582. Isaiah, the prophet Isaiah, the prophet always push us beyond what the law,
  583. what would ordinarily allow allow for?
  584. Right? And so Isaiah records don't let the foreigner joined the Lord say,
  585. the Lord will surely separate me from his people
  586. and do not let the eunuchs say
  587. I am just a dry tree
  588. would thus sayeth the Lord
  589. to the eunuchs who keep my sabbath,
  590. who choose the things that please me
  591. and hold fast to my covenant.
  592. I will give in my house and within my walls a monument
  593. and a name better
  594. than sons and daughters.
  595. And I will give them an everlasting
  596. name that shall not
  597. b
  598. cut off. Did you, did you hear that?
  599. I will give in my house and within my walls
  600. a monument and a name
  601. better
  602. than sons and daughters. And I will give them an everlasting name and they shall not
  603. be
  604. that shall not be cut off.
  605. What is that saying?
  606. That that is that is suggesting to us that that that the eunuchs,
  607. those who are intersex or those who
  608. who who who have endured generally utilized mutilation
  609. right? Or those who are who are
  610. who are who are gender nonconforming.
  611. All right
  612. may not fit into the category of son or daughter.
  613. But God says, I'll give you a name better than even the sons
  614. or the dollars and give you a name that shall not
  615. being
  616. cut off
  617. and listen.
  618. And to the foreigners who joined themselves the Lord and to minister to him
  619. to love the name of the Lord and to be a
  620. service and all who keep the sabbath and do not profane
  621. and hold fast to my covenant.
  622. These, I will bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer.
  623. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted at my altar
  624. for my house shall be called A house of Prayer for all
  625. people's
  626. right?
  627. And what is
  628. and what is the unique reading
  629. When
  630. Philip finds him
  631. right? That that was taken from
  632. from Isaiah 56. And what is the Eunuch reading when Philip steps into the chariot?
  633. But Isaiah?
  634. The Eunuch is reading Isaiah 53,
  635. which says he was oppressed and afflicted,
  636. but he did not open his mouth like a lamb
  637. that is led to the slaughter like a sheet that is
  638. before. It shares its silent and did not open his mouth.
  639. Right?
  640. And so what that suggests to us is that
  641. we are bridge,
  642. but the but the for the for the Ethiopian eunuchs in our midst,
  643. for those of us that need to crowd
  644. cross barriers
  645. that God beckons the spirit of God beckons right, God beckons
  646. you are the bridge,
  647. but at the waters of baptism
  648. we
  649. belong somebody say we belong,
  650. bob says that as they were going along the road,
  651. they came to some water and the eunuch said look
  652. here is water.
  653. What is to prevent me from being baptized.
  654. So he commanded the chariot to stop the both of them
  655. Philip and the eunuch and they went down into the water
  656. and Philip
  657. baptized him.
  658. Alright. So here at this moment,
  659. not only does the spirit beckon us to cross the device.
  660. Not only is the spirit calling us to be a bridge.
  661. That bridge creates a place of belonging
  662. baptism. Uh for the early church. And baptism for us?
  663. Now baptism says you are a part of God's family, you belong to God.
  664. When jesus is baptized in the Jordan river, right the same,
  665. the same is done for jesus,
  666. God says to jesus and the spirit descends upon jesus like a dove and God says,
  667. you are my beloved
  668. child in whom I am well pleased in the same way to this Ethiopian unit to this gender.
  669. Nonconforming
  670. loved one. The spirit of God
  671. leaves Philip to sit in the chariot with
  672. the unique and then the eunuch
  673. expresses an interest in being baptized and Philip is willing
  674. as an agent of God,
  675. as an apostle of the church of God to
  676. welcome into just in the same way that Isaiah prophesies
  677. that my house will be a house for all
  678. peoples just in the same way that Isaiah prophesies
  679. that that that you will have a name.
  680. That units will have a name even better than than merely sons or daughters.
  681. The spirit of God yet leaves Philip baptized into the church.
  682. Someone who is nonconforming who is gender nonconforming.
  683. God says you are
  684. mine.
  685. God says you belong to my family. God says, you are not alone.
  686. You are not to live a life alone.
  687. You were told you are to experience the joy
  688. of the Lord as a part of the family of belonging the family
  689. of believers
  690. Philip must have been there that day in Matthew chapter 19 when Jesus was
  691. teaching on marriage and it's interesting that
  692. Jesus while teaching on marriage then says this
  693. for there are eunuchs who have been so
  694. from birth,
  695. let me say that again, For there are eunuchs who have been so
  696. from birth
  697. and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others
  698. and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs
  699. for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.
  700. Let anyone accept this.
  701. Can
  702. jesus is giving what
  703. God knows in christ to be a difficult teaching
  704. that there are some that Jesus said are made eunuchs
  705. right, meaning that that that they they endure genital mutilation mutilation,
  706. but there are others who have been so who have been so from birth,
  707. born born gender nonconforming
  708. right in a body that is gender nonconforming.
  709. And there are others
  710. who make themselves eunuchs for the sake
  711. of the kingdom of heaven,
  712. meaning there are those who are willing to cross
  713. the way I interpret this text is that those who make themselves units
  714. are those who are willing to be the bridges that
  715. that that that stand in the space in between
  716. and I want to,
  717. I want to invite each of you
  718. to hear the voice of jesus
  719. beckoning us
  720. to be a bridge
  721. for those who were born here,
  722. for those who were made eunuchs as we know
  723. that many Children are still enduring general in utilization,
  724. many girls
  725. are still enduring genital mutilation
  726. or genital mutilation
  727. in many, in many countries like Malawi and Zambia,
  728. there are many young girls and many boys who are also
  729. enduring
  730. uh genital mutilation.
  731. There are those who are born to the knocking form,
  732. but then there are those who make themselves eunuchs
  733. who put themselves in the space in between to be a bridge
  734. of belonging and the way I want to, the way I and my
  735. the holy ghost imagination, I envision you,
  736. I envisioned myself, I envision us
  737. as being those whom the spirit of God is yet calling
  738. to make ourselves eunuchs to stand in the gap
  739. to be willing
  740. to stand in the space in between
  741. with those who are gender non conforming
  742. to to say I may not be able
  743. to be in your body, but I'm willing to get in the chariot with you.
  744. And that way when we enter into relationship
  745. with our loved ones who are gender nonconforming.
  746. When we advocate on their behalf, we make ourselves eunuchs.
  747. We we we we we say I may not be able to be in your body,
  748. but I'm willing to live a sanctified and holy life on your behalf.
  749. I'm willing to stand in the gap on your behalf.
  750. I'm willing to be like the one that the eunuch was reading about.
  751. I'm willing the eunuch was reading about one who
  752. though he was innocent although he did nothing wrong.
  753. Although he did nothing wrong. Getting a phone call,
  754. although he did nothing wrong,
  755. he was oppressed,
  756. He was oppressed.
  757. The bible says he was afflicted yet he did not
  758. open his mouth like a lamb led to the slaughter.
  759. What does it mean for us to be willing to lay our life
  760. down in the way that jesus laid his life down for us.
  761. What does it look like for us to lay our
  762. lives down for somebody else for the sake of welcome?
  763. For the sake of radical belonging?
  764. What does it look like for us to embrace the Beauty?
  765. The Beauty
  766. to for us to be baptized together
  767. in the Beauty of Blackness? What does it look like for you?
  768. What does it look like for me to be baptized in The Beauty of Blackness?
  769. To be a bridge to hear the spirit beckoning us to hear the spirit calling
  770. us into the beauty of welcoming those
  771. who society says are marginalized are outcasts.
  772. What does it look like for us to make ourselves eunuchs
  773. for the sake of the Kingdom of God as pastor.
  774. Mirror
  775. sometimes reminds us the family of God and for the sake of the Kingdom of God in which
  776. each of us is treated as royalty in which
  777. each of us is treated as priest and priestess.
  778. How is God calling you? How is God calling me? How is God calling us
  779. to be a bridge
  780. through baptism?
  781. To belonging
  782. to be a bridge
  783. through baptism
  784. to becoming
  785. to be a bridge
  786. into the baptism
  787. in the beauty
  788. blackness.
  789. Pray with
  790. gracious God, I know that the word that
  791. offer today as I've done it as
  792. speedily and meekly
  793. as
  794. early as I can. I know Lord that
  795. oh my God,
  796. this word maybe as even as jesus said, it may be a difficult word
  797. and Lord, I just pray that
  798. it would help
  799. this were to follow on good ground
  800. or anything that I said, if it is not like you, I pray that
  801. Lord God, that
  802. that
  803. for Gandhi would not bear any
  804. the Lord. If anything I've said is
  805. I pray that they would
  806. bear fruit and that it will be multiplied some tin,
  807. some 50
  808. Some 100 fold
  809. fruit,
  810. righteousness through your kingdom
  811. that your kid
  812. to your family,
  813. which we all belong
  814. in jesus name. I pray
  815. in bed
  816. and
  817. and before I pass this off to the worship team,
