  1. everyone. Good morning.
  2. It's Monday, April 6.
  3. It's the second day of holy Week.
  4. My name is Hanzo Hamamura with McKay low, which means
  5. presence in Hawaiian, where people who believe in being present
  6. with one another and present in our community and what
  7. we're trying to deal with these online devotionals is basically
  8. continue. Thio be present with one another, albeit in a
  9. virtual sense on DSO.
  10. These times are meant to basically help us reflect on
  11. some scripture on and still find ways to be present
  12. with one another and the community, even amidst self isolation.
  13. Dew Cove in 19.
  14. And so what we're gonna do today is we're gonna
  15. look at the second day in Holding Week and Scripture.
  16. So yesterday was the beginning of Holy week.
  17. We talked about the triumphal entry where Jesus rode into
  18. Jerusalem on a donkey.
  19. And so today we're gonna go into the rednecks Chronological
  20. day in Scripture as recorded again in Mark, Chapter 11.
  21. It's a familiar story if you've been in church for
  22. a while or if you've been following Jesus for while
  23. you're familiar with his work, this is gonna be a
  24. familiar story to use.
  25. So rock Chapter 11 will pick it up in verse
  26. 15. Then they the disciples came to Jerusalem, and he,
  27. Jesus and the Disciples entered the temple and began to
  28. drive out those who were buying and selling in the
  29. temple and overturned the tables of the money changers and
  30. the seats of those who are selling doves.
  31. And he would not permit anyone to carry merchandise through
  32. the temple.
  33. So before I read the rest of that, I just
  34. when I read Scripture, I like to visualize it and
  35. kind of just make a little movie in my head.
  36. That's just how my mind works, and maybe it is
  37. for you as well.
  38. But it's helpful to understand what the temple was like
  39. during this time during the days of Jesus, and especially
  40. during Passover time or festival time.
  41. And so the temple was arranged kind of hierarchical were
  42. the outermost chords.
  43. If you were a gentile, if you were not a
  44. Jewish person, you could only be in the outermost area
  45. on then.
  46. If you were Jewish person, someone from the people of
  47. Israel, you go into the next court.
  48. If you were a Jewish man, you go to the
  49. next court.
  50. So on and so forth.
  51. Uh, and then there, this time during Passover week, there
  52. would be merchants and basically kiosks where you can show
  53. up and you can buy an animal for a sin,
  54. offering to sacrifice that animal for your sins.
  55. There is also says, that there would be merchandise.
  56. Their witness.
  57. I just I think about things like there's like, Maybe
  58. cloaks and hoodies are like rugs and sandals and stuff
  59. that you can buy that you know, have, like the
  60. picture of the temple and scarred.
  61. You know, something like that.
  62. And there's basically just this marketplace feel to it now.
  63. That's not a completely unfamiliar image to us, like if
  64. you can imagine going to a concert are going to
  65. say a big basketball game.
  66. You know, the big arena.
  67. You have to pay an admission price to get in
  68. like you can.
  69. You can.
  70. You can walk around outside the building, but you can't
  71. go in the sea.
  72. Pain admission.
  73. You have to prove that you pay that admission, but
  74. before you get into the inner arena, there would be
  75. no market stuff right.
  76. There's food, refreshments, drinks, libations and you know merchandise where
  77. you can get hoodies and jackets and hats and going
  78. the drunk sunglasses and stuff like that.
  79. So it's not an unfamiliar picture to us.
  80. And this is what's happening Jesus day.
  81. And for the disciples, this kind of just how it
  82. is, You know, I don't know that there's no indication
  83. that they think something's wrong with it.
  84. This is probably just how it's been since they were
  85. kids, and so it's kind of business as usual.
  86. And then they see Jesus kind of beast mode erupt
  87. into anger.
  88. Flip tables kick people out.
  89. Uh, open bird cages take money all over the floor.
  90. Other gospel writers talk about how he would get ropes
  91. and make it into a whip with people out cool
  92. stuff right like this.
  93. The crazy, dangerous side of Jesus.
  94. And it wasn't until later that they would remember.
  95. Oh, it was written in the old Covenant scriptures that
  96. the Christ on the side would be filled with zeal
  97. for the House of the Lord.
  98. And so with that in mind, his actions start to
  99. make a little bit more in the sense.
  100. What does it mean to have a zeal or a
  101. passion for the House of the Lord.
  102. And so Jesus, the Scripture continues with this where he
  103. wouldn't allow people to carry merchandise through the temple.
  104. And then he began to teach them and say to
  105. them, Is it not written?
  106. My house shall be called a house of prayer for
  107. all the nations.
  108. But you have made it or robbers den.
  109. And so what Jesus is doing here is calling out
  110. hypocrisy on the part of religious leaders of the day
  111. by saying that this is a place that's a holy,
  112. puts its supposed to be a place of prayer not
  113. just for your people, but for all nations.
  114. And what's happening here is it is clearly not a
  115. picture of that.
  116. And so Jesus is actually quoting a two separate, um,
  117. Old Testament prophecies one from Jeremiah, one from Isaiah Jeremiah,
  118. Chapter seven.
  119. Jesus Jeremiah makes that reference to the temple being a
  120. den of thieves.
  121. And then Isaiah, Chapter 56.
  122. If you're looking for additional reading off of today's devotional,
  123. are highly recommend this chapter.
  124. It's 1st 7 specifically that Jesus references.
  125. But the whole chapter is just this beautiful, prophetic picture
  126. of the day when literally all people from all nations
  127. will come to the dwelling place of the Lord and
  128. find his joy.
  129. Find his provisioned, find his blessing Because all of those
  130. things are for all nations, for all people.
  131. His presence is for all nations and for all people.
  132. And this is something that is carried throughout the Old
  133. Testament or even from the beginning.
  134. In the garden with Adam and Eve, God commands them
  135. to fill the earth and to rule it as his
  136. image bears.
  137. So to fill the world with the presence of God.
  138. And then people like Noah, people like Abraham.
  139. When God would make covenant's with them, it would.
  140. It was always clear that it was for the benefit
  141. of all nations of the people of Israel.
  142. When they came out of Egypt on God made covenant
  143. with them through Moses.
  144. It was especially in the books that maybe people don't
  145. like to read like the medicus numbers Deuteronomy, countless passages
  146. where the Lord is saying to them that you know
  147. I will be with you.
  148. But it's for the benefit.
  149. The blessing of all nations where all nations will come
  150. to you on be blessed because of my presence in
  151. your midst.
  152. And so Jesus is calling everybody back to that If
  153. you follow just the chronology of that after the death
  154. of the resurrection of Jesus, the New Testament apostles would
  155. right then that the dwelling place of God with House
  156. of the Lord is no longer at the temple.
  157. It's not a central physical location, but it is now
  158. the people of God.
  159. It's the church.
  160. It's the followers of Jesus filled with the Holy Spirit.
  161. That's you, and that's me.
  162. And so, if we feel, just follow this this path
  163. of thinking where the dwelling place of the Lord as
  164. a house of prayer for all nations, and how does
  165. that translate to us today?
  166. So for me, my reflection question for each of us
  167. to just think about today is that for the reading,
  168. Isaiah 56.
  169. But also this.
  170. How can your house, which is now a time of
  171. self isolation, become a place of prayer for all nations?
  172. Okay, so how can your house, uh, in covert 19
  173. self isolation times become a place of prayer for all
  174. nations? That means you personally, as a dwelling place of
  175. the Lord also your house in your house.
  176. How can it become a place of prayer for all
  177. nations? So just some ideas to get you thinking as
  178. you meditated.
  179. Reflect on this if you want to just spend some
  180. time praying for the entire world because the entire world
  181. all nations are affected of bike over 19.
  182. Justus, we are right now.
  183. And so offering prayers for for them on behalf of
  184. the people of God is something that you can do.
  185. Um, if you know people who live in other countries
  186. or who are visiting other countries right now on unable
  187. to return home, just offering prayers for them on maybe
  188. even getting on the phone with them and praying for
  189. them directly so they can hear it.
  190. It's not a bad idea.
  191. But also I think the deeper point of reflection is
  192. that if I Hans, um, to be a place of
  193. prayer and worship as an example to all nations and
  194. even in times of self isolation, I am not going
  195. to be just consumed with my personal of bubble.
  196. And I'm I'm gonna literally be someone who is conscious
  197. of and thank you of people around me.
  198. because I has a dwelling place of God and for
  199. the benefit of all people, everybody around me.
  200. And how can I figure how to do that?
  201. Even in times when you know we're not allowed within
  202. six feet of each other?
  203. How can I do that?
  204. So I think just reflecting on this and asking the
  205. Lord will be well worth your time today.
  206. Okay, So before I close, I just wanna remind everyone
  207. is your market little owner.
  208. You have gotten this sent to your email from Marisa.
  209. It's the delivering hope on Easter Packet.
  210. I highly suggest you take a look at it.
  211. It's 14 pages of pdf glory, and it is filled
  212. with Tom.
  213. I mean, there's so much work that's gone into it.
  214. It's just beautiful to the hole.
  215. But it has so many resource is videos on just
  216. questions, things that are meant for you to reflect on,
  217. but also the things that you can share with other
  218. people as well during time of Easter.
  219. You know, when most churches make it a big time
  220. to invite other people to church service.
  221. We're still as people who wanna be president community.
  222. We're thinking of different ways to do that.
  223. And so this packet is again 14 pages filled with
  224. ideas and resource is for how you can deliver, hold
  225. and be a person of hope to all nations to
  226. people in our community, even though we are still in
  227. times of self isolation.
  228. Okay, so that's it for today.
  229. Thank you so much for joining us.
  230. And don't forget to be on the lookout tomorrow for
  231. day three of the online devotions.
