00:01 - 00:04
Hello, today we'll be learning about Gabriel Silva and his a
00:05 - 00:07
phd difficulties at school.
00:07 - 00:11
We'll be learning about a tools,
00:11 - 00:13
Google suite apps and an
00:13 - 00:16
tech tool that will benefit Gabriel at school.
00:16 - 00:22
And lastly, we'll discuss the importance of assistive and educational technology
00:23 - 00:24
in general.
00:26 - 00:30
So first we'll be discussing who Gabriel Silva is
00:31 - 00:33
and what are his um
00:34 - 00:37
strengths and what are his disadvantages?
00:38 - 00:40
Um Gabriel Silva
00:40 - 00:45
is a second grade boy that has a DH D he's full of energy.
00:45 - 00:49
He is outgoing, he's friendly, he's talkative.
00:50 - 00:53
He, he wants to have audience all the time.
00:54 - 00:54
Um
00:55 - 00:56
and
00:56 - 00:58
be a leader.
00:58 - 01:03
He in recess, he runs out of the classroom because he was sitting for too long.
01:04 - 01:06
Um He excels in every game
01:06 - 01:11
at recess and he is uh as mentioned, he's a role model.
01:11 - 01:17
So he is, he, he, he wants to be a leader. He wants to organize games and
01:17 - 01:23
um even when it's time to go back in school in the classroom, he's the last to come.
01:23 - 01:27
He keeps playing at the playground and once a teacher finally pulls him back in,
01:27 - 01:32
he runs like a bullet to the to be first in line to get inside. He is,
01:32 - 01:33
he has a lot of energy
01:34 - 01:35
problem is, um,
01:35 - 01:42
in the classroom it is, um, he cannot keep up with the work. Meaning
01:42 - 01:42
he's
01:43 - 01:48
advantage is that he, he does have the skills for reading and math and,
01:48 - 01:50
and he, he, he, he can learn,
01:50 - 01:54
but the disadvantage is that he's very unorganized
01:54 - 01:57
and his papers are all over the place
01:57 - 01:58
and
02:01 - 02:03
he doesn't turn in his work.
02:03 - 02:08
So his skills seem to be, um, around grade level,
02:09 - 02:14
but he fails to turn in all his, his complete work, which, um,
02:15 - 02:17
he is a problem in school. Um,
02:18 - 02:19
he, uh,
02:19 - 02:21
he seems interested in learning but he is
02:21 - 02:25
very easily distracted which stops him from,
02:25 - 02:27
um, from learning at times.
02:28 - 02:29
Um,
02:29 - 02:31
he could, um,
02:33 - 02:38
start a page but then jump up, talk to a friend pull toys
02:39 - 02:41
and, um, and his desk is very messy.
02:41 - 02:47
So he, even if he tries to find something when the teacher comes over,
02:47 - 02:48
um,
02:48 - 02:51
he, he just forgot what he was trying to do.
02:51 - 02:52
So,
02:54 - 02:58
being forgetful and this organized really, um,
02:59 - 03:04
stops him from, um, prevents him from, from excelling in school.
03:04 - 03:10
Um, the teacher sees a lot of papers, uh, and a mess on his, on his desk and, um,
03:10 - 03:12
sometimes when he takes home
03:12 - 03:12
the
03:12 - 03:18
takes work home, he can, um, he can finish it better but he completes most of it. But
03:18 - 03:19
again, um,
03:19 - 03:22
he, he doesn't give, he forgets to give it to the teacher.
03:22 - 03:27
So his teacher always finds over past due assignments on his desk.
03:27 - 03:34
So, um again, being forgetful and disorganized and having a lot of energy,
03:34 - 03:35
um
03:35 - 03:41
really uh hurts him in excelling in, in, in academically.
03:41 - 03:43
Um But again,
03:43 - 03:47
his advan advantages are that he's very friendly and he's outgoing
03:47 - 03:49
and he has the skills and he wants to learn.
03:50 - 03:54
Um So next, we'll be discussing
03:54 - 03:58
of some ways that we, that can help him excel in school
04:03 - 04:06
one way to excel at school um
04:06 - 04:09
is to help him with assistant technology tools.
04:09 - 04:13
And uh examples of those tools would be
04:13 - 04:15
um seat cushion,
04:15 - 04:18
which is a very um
04:19 - 04:23
it's a, it's, it's a wobbly seat that he can sit on and that will help him
04:23 - 04:29
um move around in his seat and channel his energy towards the seat.
04:29 - 04:32
Um and maybe be able to
04:32 - 04:35
um listen to the teacher better and learn
04:35 - 04:41
and not instead of leaning over and talking to friends. Um that might help him.
04:41 - 04:46
And the second uh tool would be text to speech and speech to text
04:46 - 04:50
um which might help him
04:50 - 04:51
um
04:51 - 04:53
focus on a screen
04:54 - 04:54
and
04:55 - 04:55
type
04:56 - 04:58
and ta talk to type
04:58 - 05:06
and um you know, the the the text will talk to him and that might might engage him
05:06 - 05:09
to uh continue studying that way.
05:10 - 05:11
Um
05:17 - 05:20
Another way that can help him would be uh Google Suite
05:21 - 05:21
apps.
05:21 - 05:22
Um
05:22 - 05:25
One of them is the Google Jam Board
05:25 - 05:27
where he can uh doodle
05:27 - 05:31
and interact and communicate, communicate with his teacher
05:31 - 05:35
and his teacher could leave him sticky notes and he could leave her.
05:35 - 05:37
Um He can even record, he,
05:37 - 05:42
she can teach him how to record his screen while uh they interact that way.
05:42 - 05:49
And um he can leave her uh audio messages talking to her that might again engage him
05:49 - 05:53
to um interact and, and work with her teacher in, in,
05:53 - 05:57
in the same way for the teacher to work and um
05:57 - 06:00
make him more interested in understanding in
06:00 - 06:02
a different way of communicating with him.
06:02 - 06:06
And the second thing is the Google calendar, which they can both share
06:06 - 06:12
and she can show him um due dates that he has for each assignments
06:12 - 06:16
and she can even bring the calendar into jam board.
06:16 - 06:18
Uh if needed, if, if that, well,
06:19 - 06:25
if that seemed to help him better and help him follow up that way, you know, through
06:26 - 06:30
audio, through um video recordings, through different uh tech tools,
06:30 - 06:35
engage him in understanding and remembering and sticky notes and
06:35 - 06:37
remembering to um
06:38 - 06:41
to, to make it to, to his, his goals, his due dates
06:41 - 06:45
and to have less paper, maybe that will, that will help too.
06:45 - 06:49
Uh Seems he doesn't, he doesn't seem like he can
06:50 - 06:52
follow up with, with giving in his work. And
06:53 - 06:53
um
06:54 - 06:59
even even with tech tools, I mean, he will, he will need to be reminded to turn in.
06:59 - 07:00
Um
07:01 - 07:04
But I think bringing tech into the classroom will help him,
07:05 - 07:07
which bring us to the next thing.
07:07 - 07:12
Um I believe that uh gamify learning tools and there are so many of them,
07:12 - 07:15
but for example, quizzes and puzzle,
07:15 - 07:17
it will help him
07:17 - 07:21
a lot. By first of all, he doesn't need to turn in.
07:21 - 07:25
It's, it, it's, it assesses his abilities immediately. So,
07:25 - 07:31
uh it says one step and um, it's, it's a very engaging and fun way to learn,
07:31 - 07:35
especially for, for a kid like him that he wants to just run around.
07:35 - 07:38
Maybe he can, she can bring, he loves soccer so he can bring
07:38 - 07:44
uh soccer into the, into the, into the picture and, and, and engage him that way
07:44 - 07:48
and learning and uh again with the calendar and
07:48 - 07:52
uh different different ways of engaging him in,
07:52 - 07:54
in and making it to due dates,
07:54 - 07:57
it will help him um succeed in school, hopefully,
08:00 - 08:03
which brings us to the last uh topic of the day,
08:03 - 08:07
the importance of assistive and education technology.
08:08 - 08:08
Um
08:09 - 08:12
having educational technology
08:13 - 08:14
in the classroom.
08:14 - 08:21
Uh assistive technology specifically is um is great for um kids with disabilities,
08:21 - 08:28
with different disabilities. Um assistive technology can, can save a kid some time
08:28 - 08:35
um from, from not being able to learn at all and being in an in a classroom environment
08:35 - 08:36
um
08:36 - 08:40
to being able to participate like the rest of the class,
08:40 - 08:43
which is grand for those kids.
08:43 - 08:48
And educational technology is very important because it could be
08:48 - 08:52
um engaging for some kids, the Visu, the
08:53 - 08:53
Visu
08:53 - 08:53
vis
08:54 - 08:54
visual
08:55 - 08:55
um
08:56 - 08:59
uh gifts and,
08:59 - 09:02
and all the, like, let's say, for a DH
09:02 - 09:05
D specifically, again, as we're talking about Gabriel having
09:05 - 09:07
something um
09:07 - 09:09
like whiteboard dot chat,
09:09 - 09:13
having this snowing all of a sudden and getting their attention.
09:14 - 09:17
Um having them communicate without typing.
09:17 - 09:22
They, they don't have patience to sit down, they want to quickly record an audio on
09:22 - 09:24
uh Palet, let's say,
09:24 - 09:27
or just screen record what they do to explain
09:27 - 09:30
to their teacher what they're doing on uh screen cast
09:31 - 09:36
um using again. Uh There are so many voice recording options using
09:36 - 09:36
V
09:37 - 09:42
voice note notes or just different uh recording audio recording on,
09:42 - 09:43
on different platforms
09:43 - 09:45
are great for these kids.
09:45 - 09:46
Um
09:46 - 09:47
And it's very engaging,
09:47 - 09:52
making uh making lessons with the whole class collaborating together,
09:52 - 09:53
whether it's remote or
09:54 - 09:54
in person
09:55 - 09:59
um is great and uh each kid can get
10:00 - 10:00
uh
10:01 - 10:06
individualized attention and feedback and um they,
10:06 - 10:08
some groups can work together and
10:08 - 10:10
collaborate together through different platforms,
10:11 - 10:15
um let's say, through different white boards, uh jam board or
10:15 - 10:18
um whatever digital, there are so many digital app, uh white
10:18 - 10:19
boards out there,
10:20 - 10:23
the teacher can uh give an assignment
10:23 - 10:24
uh to the, all the class,
10:24 - 10:27
the entire classroom or just uh make few
10:27 - 10:30
groups and um have them collaborate together on,
10:30 - 10:32
on, on different topics.
10:32 - 10:36
Um It just, it's very engaging and great uh way
10:37 - 10:41
to get kids attention. And in addition to the other other methods.
10:42 - 10:42
Um
10:43 - 10:46
having technology is uh education, technology is,
10:46 - 10:50
is a great uh way of engaging kids into learning.
10:50 - 10:51
Thank you for listening.
