00:01 - 00:05
What's up sociology? 1 20. Welcome back to a great week.
00:05 - 00:07
During the spring semester of 2022
00:08 - 00:10
we are going to be moving into section two of unit
00:10 - 00:14
one this court in the course and onto social theory.
00:14 - 00:16
Um I think the big thing that a lot of you want
00:16 - 00:19
to know for this week is what's our modality gonna be,
00:19 - 00:22
especially for those of you who elected to uh
00:22 - 00:27
select the flip class option, which means you'll be on your own on Tuesdays.
00:27 - 00:29
But then in the classroom on Thursdays
00:29 - 00:31
uh so far it looks like we are going to be in
00:31 - 00:35
the classroom on thursday for those of you that selected that option.
00:35 - 00:37
So I'll tell you a little bit about what that's going
00:37 - 00:40
to be like a little bit later in the video.
00:40 - 00:42
Did you need to say hi before I throw you off the table?
00:43 - 00:45
Hello again, everybody that's all year.
00:46 - 00:50
Alright, okay. Alright. So what are we going to be doing this week?
00:50 - 00:53
We are going to be jumping into social theory.
00:54 - 00:54
So,
00:54 - 00:58
social theory is such a cool part of sociology because what it
00:58 - 01:04
really helps us look at is look through the lens of how
01:04 - 01:09
different people have made these big kind of claims about what society looks like.
01:09 - 01:09
Now,
01:09 - 01:12
the neat thing about sociology because it's a social
01:12 - 01:15
science is that we're not just thinking about things.
01:15 - 01:17
We take these kinds of theories and then go test them out
01:17 - 01:20
in the world right by doing the kind of social research.
01:20 - 01:25
The social theory is such an integral part of that because what it helps us do
01:25 - 01:27
when we're doing that research is anchor those
01:27 - 01:29
research questions that we develop and that we have
01:30 - 01:35
to get us to ask those kinds of questions about, you know,
01:35 - 01:38
what's the orientation that we're having for asking
01:38 - 01:40
the kind of questions that we're asking,
01:40 - 01:41
right?
01:42 - 01:44
And people get a little bit overwhelmed by this
01:44 - 01:46
chapter because it is a lot of information,
01:46 - 01:49
it kind of opens our eyes to a lot of things for the first time.
01:50 - 01:55
But the thing that I want to tell you as a person with three degrees in sociology is
01:55 - 01:57
that you're not going to get all elements of
01:57 - 01:59
social theory the first time that you study it.
01:59 - 02:03
Alright, so don't feel that pressure to really memorize everything,
02:03 - 02:05
feel like you have to know things backwards and forwards,
02:06 - 02:10
but really take this time in this particular week
02:10 - 02:13
to kind of just get a sense of what social theory is,
02:13 - 02:15
which is explained a little bit more down below.
02:15 - 02:20
Uh and the kind of major theoretical orientations that are in sociology,
02:20 - 02:23
which we'll see here even on this tiny table or is going to
02:23 - 02:26
be helpful symbolic interaction of symbolic interaction
02:26 - 02:29
is um uh functional ism and conflict
02:29 - 02:33
theory are a real big anchored sociological perspectives now.
02:33 - 02:36
Of course there's other theories like feminist theory, queer theory.
02:36 - 02:40
Um even subsets of these different kind of fields that
02:40 - 02:45
really help us understand society and anchor our social research.
02:45 - 02:48
But these big main three are what are really the kind of
02:48 - 02:50
introduction that you're going to get to social theory this week.
02:51 - 02:51
Okay.
02:51 - 02:54
So what I'm encouraging you to do is don't
02:54 - 02:57
be too like hung up on memorizing everything.
02:57 - 03:02
But really what you're looking for in this particular section is
03:02 - 03:06
to just get an understanding of what social theory even is.
03:06 - 03:06
All right.
03:06 - 03:09
So what's gonna be helpful with that then,
03:09 - 03:12
is that we're gonna have a chapter assignment, right?
03:12 - 03:14
Uh So regardless of whether or not you
03:14 - 03:17
you picked flipped or asynchronous for the course,
03:17 - 03:19
you're Tuesdays are gonna look the same regardless of what you've
03:19 - 03:22
selected because Tuesdays are always going to be on your own.
03:22 - 03:26
So on Tuesday you're gonna watch a short lecture video below.
03:26 - 03:30
Or by Tuesday, watch the lecture video below. Read the chapter of the text.
03:30 - 03:35
Take the little quizzes that are embedded within the text. All by 11:59 p. m.
03:35 - 03:37
on Tuesday evening.
03:37 - 03:43
So um some people have been asking me if the end of chapter quizzes necessary.
03:43 - 03:46
No, it's not. I don't know why it's popping up.
03:46 - 03:50
Pearson kind of changed the platform on us so I don't know why it's popping up still.
03:50 - 03:52
But the only thing that you have to complete for a grade in
03:52 - 03:55
there are gonna be those chapter quizzes that pop up for you.
03:55 - 03:56
Okay.
03:56 - 03:59
Um And those are gonna be sinking to canvass all semester.
03:59 - 04:04
And if you don't see them sink right away. Don't panic, they're there, I promise.
04:04 - 04:07
And if they don't sink because sometimes technology is the worst.
04:07 - 04:12
Uh don't panic because I'll be able to always see them in the Pearson platform to.
04:12 - 04:13
Alright,
04:13 - 04:18
okay. So by Tuesday, that's what you need to do regardless of your mortality.
04:18 - 04:22
And this week we're gonna be doing something similar to what we did last week,
04:22 - 04:23
which is a reading discussion.
04:23 - 04:28
So uh just as a reminder of what we're really trying to go after these
04:28 - 04:30
questions is really to take a sociological
04:30 - 04:33
approach to understanding these kinds of things.
04:33 - 04:35
These types of
04:35 - 04:39
articles or videos that we have assigned for this week
04:39 - 04:44
are a little bit different because they're really focusing on the overview
04:44 - 04:48
of what these different kind of orientations and perspectives are in sociology.
04:48 - 04:49
So,
04:50 - 04:52
you know, be creative in your questions.
04:52 - 04:57
Uh you know, the thing that we're not looking for with these are things like,
04:57 - 04:57
you know,
04:58 - 05:04
what was seen on page 57 or something like that and avoid super broad questions like,
05:04 - 05:06
you know, and and show me,
05:06 - 05:09
show me that you watch this is what I'm really trying to get you to to show.
05:09 - 05:11
And the kind of questions that we have.
05:11 - 05:16
And it's always nice to, you know, ask and pose questions to your group mates
05:16 - 05:21
to uh see questions that you would like to answer yourself to.
05:21 - 05:22
Things that got you curious when you
05:22 - 05:26
were reviewing these different articles and videos.
05:27 - 05:29
So the nice thing is that you've done this before,
05:29 - 05:32
I've looked briefly over most of everybody's
05:33 - 05:36
pieces and and they look they look good. Okay.
05:36 - 05:41
And the good thing to this week is that today, Tuesday and Wednesday,
05:41 - 05:43
I'm gonna be grading.
05:43 - 05:45
So you also have some feedback coming soon on those.
05:45 - 05:48
But remember there's also that little link at the top
05:48 - 05:51
of your discussion boards that are going to give you some
05:52 - 05:53
previous examples of these,
05:53 - 05:58
which are going to be super useful for you to generate your own questions.
05:58 - 05:58
Okay.
05:58 - 06:01
But also you can always email me if you're like, I'm struggling,
06:01 - 06:04
let me show you what I got and I'll be like, you're doing it,
06:04 - 06:07
you're killing it because you're really smart and I love to see it.
06:07 - 06:07
All right,
06:08 - 06:12
okay, so now because we have a flipped class asynchronous class,
06:12 - 06:14
we're gonna have a few different things that people are doing.
06:14 - 06:17
If you sign up to be an asynchronous student,
06:17 - 06:21
what you're going to be doing is the same kind of thing that everybody did last week,
06:21 - 06:25
complete your prompts by thursday at 11 59 PM and
06:25 - 06:29
complete your responses by saturday at 11:59 p.m. Alright,
06:29 - 06:31
so again, remember that
06:31 - 06:34
uh due dates are not completion dates,
06:34 - 06:37
due dates are the last time that you can turn something in.
06:37 - 06:40
So if you get your discussion questions done
06:40 - 06:43
on Wednesday, great, you're done,
06:43 - 06:46
you don't have to complete your responses until saturday.
06:46 - 06:51
Uh So, you know, remember that you're not if you're running up against that,
06:51 - 06:57
you're gonna have to put some time and prior to actually doing the activity.
06:57 - 07:00
So make sure to go through and do that. All right.
07:01 - 07:07
So the change though is for those of you that elected to be flipped class students,
07:07 - 07:10
we've got a little bit different things that you're going to be doing this week.
07:10 - 07:11
You're still going to read the articles.
07:12 - 07:14
Actually, I think there are two videos for this week.
07:14 - 07:15
So you're gonna be watching them.
07:15 - 07:20
Uh So read the assigned, read or watch the assigned pieces that we have this week.
07:20 - 07:24
And the thing that's different for y'all that are flipped class students,
07:24 - 07:30
you need to have your discussion prompts and by class time on thursday.
07:30 - 07:31
So if you're one of my
07:32 - 07:33
ADM 8 10
07:34 - 07:38
a am classes, get your prompts in by hmm.
07:38 - 07:41
If you're my 1:10 p.m. Class,
07:41 - 07:46
get your prompts in by 1:10 p.m. If you're in my 2 50 class,
07:46 - 07:50
get your prompts in by 2:50 p.m. On thursday.
07:51 - 07:54
Okay. And so the reason that we need to get the prompts in
07:55 - 07:58
before class starts is because we're gonna be using your
07:58 - 08:02
questions to really guide our in person discussion in class.
08:02 - 08:05
Sorry, for the shaky screen. Cat is back there.
08:05 - 08:08
So that's what we're going to be doing in class
08:08 - 08:10
on the days that we have reading discussions assigned.
08:10 - 08:14
Is that instead of doing responses on your discussion board,
08:14 - 08:17
you're gonna be doing them in class with your group mates.
08:17 - 08:18
Okay.
08:18 - 08:20
Uh So the other thing that will do for those of
08:20 - 08:22
you that would like to do to do flip class,
08:22 - 08:24
you'll get a little bit more face time with me.
08:24 - 08:25
Um
08:25 - 08:30
Where you know what, I'll usually introduce the topic that we're talking.
08:30 - 08:31
We'll do a little activity.
08:31 - 08:34
We'll answer questions about what we found in the chapter.
08:34 - 08:36
So it's not just gonna be discussion.
08:36 - 08:39
We're gonna have a little bit more time to do to do some stuff together too.
08:39 - 08:42
All right, so the big difference here,
08:42 - 08:46
get them in my class time and you don't have to respond on the boards.
08:46 - 08:49
Okay? Because you're going to be doing the responses
08:49 - 08:53
in class with us in our in our physical classroom.
08:53 - 09:00
Alright. So um other big thing too for you flip class students and I'm gonna take
09:01 - 09:06
this part off really quickly. Oops. No, let me come back there. I am.
09:07 - 09:13
I know that, you know, masks suck and they're the worst sometimes.
09:13 - 09:17
But again, the circumstances for me are a little bit different.
09:17 - 09:21
I do have a four year old. They're not able to be vaccinated yet.
09:21 - 09:23
So I'm taking every precaution that I can
09:23 - 09:25
to be safe.
09:25 - 09:30
So if you wouldn't mind uh wearing a mask in my class,
09:30 - 09:33
it would really do me a solid to feel more
09:33 - 09:36
comfortable and to be able to spend uh you know,
09:36 - 09:37
a good time with you guys.
09:37 - 09:37
Okay.
09:38 - 09:39
Um
09:39 - 09:42
you know, I know that I can't force you to wear it,
09:42 - 09:46
but I would hope that we respect each other enough that you do.
09:46 - 09:46
Alright.
09:46 - 09:50
I'll always have masks on me as well if you don't carry them anymore,
09:50 - 09:53
I you can come and get one from me at the beginning of class.
09:53 - 09:57
We're for that hour or so that were together and then go on with your life.
09:57 - 10:00
Alright, Okay, so my little spiel about that
10:01 - 10:03
and I'm back. Okay, So,
10:04 - 10:07
uh so I'll send a reminder on Wednesday.
10:07 - 10:10
I don't anticipate us not being in person on thursday
10:10 - 10:13
for those of you that are fit flip class students,
10:13 - 10:18
but if anything changes at all, I will make sure to let you know as soon as possible.
10:18 - 10:22
If for some reason or if I get my full accommodation to be online,
10:22 - 10:25
then I'll let you know as soon as possible.
10:25 - 10:25
Okay,
10:25 - 10:29
so big thing too is that you can schedule me for one on one
10:29 - 10:31
during my office hours on Wednesdays or
10:31 - 10:34
on Tuesdays during what's isolated class time,
10:34 - 10:39
you can always find that uh in the email announcements that we get sent out
10:39 - 10:42
and again, if you're ever feeling ever lost in our class
10:43 - 10:44
modules are your friends.
10:44 - 10:45
Okay,
10:45 - 10:48
so go to the modules tab and go to the tab on the same or the
10:48 - 10:52
part on the front page and you'll see which module we're currently in for the week.
10:52 - 10:57
All right. Okay. So long video and for some introductions.
10:57 - 11:01
But really looking forward to seeing you all, uh,
11:01 - 11:03
for those of you that are flipped class students
11:03 - 11:11
wear a mask, please. But if you have any questions for me, please don't email me.
11:11 - 11:13
I'm very available for you
11:13 - 11:15
and really looking forward to getting into
11:15 - 11:17
this particular week with social theory.
11:17 - 11:20
Alright. Usually these won't be so long, but they were today.
11:20 - 11:26
Hopefully my cat was a nice surprise and that makes it better. Okay. I'm going to go by
