  1. Um I think Shelby junior portrays
  2. Chalala as a young girl who is captivated in
  3. an environment where she feels as if the only escape
  4. or the only benefit to.
  5. Um
  6. I wouldn't even say financial security 100%
  7. but just to have some type of money is to sell her body to men
  8. that live within her environment.
  9. Um I think
  10. Selby definitely inserts his character
  11. at a right time within her book, sorry, within his book,
  12. even though it seems like the book is all over the place.
  13. I do think there is a sense of order when it comes to these characters.
  14. Um
  15. And I think it also shows the realism within this environment as well.
  16. Some people may find the um story uncomfortable, but I just think it's real.
  17. Uh things like this do happen in real life. There are women out here who,
  18. you know, do prostitute and
  19. do feel as if this is the only way they can
  20. win in life. Um
  21. I think her life turned out the way it did solely because of her,
  22. but I do think there were environmental factors, of course. Um And
  23. you know, not having parents um being young was also another factor in her life. Um,
  24. usually when you're young, you're young minded.
  25. So a lot of times you have no guidance or
  26. you, you know, you have no guidance and like I said, she didn't have any parents.
  27. So that just made it even worse for her.
  28. She had no friends, no one to run to no advice to take from anyone. So,
  29. you know, it definitely was harder for her.
  30. And I can see that I'm not taking away from her struggle.
  31. But I think one thing that
  32. she did was feed into her struggle. I don't think you should feed into a struggle.
  33. I think you should um
  34. try to beat your struggle. And I think that's where she
  35. lost in life was
  36. thinking that she had to adhere to her struggle. So
  37. I also understood that there were different viewpoints on whether
  38. she had less control or more control over her life.
  39. And in class, we even compared
  40. uh Georgette to char a
  41. lot.
  42. Um In fact, I kind of disagreed with the comparison.
  43. I don't think Selby wrote these two characters to be compared.
  44. I think he just showed
  45. two different people with two different stories. If that makes sense. I think
  46. in life, a lot of people tend to compare people's struggle, sorry, struggle,
  47. struggles, um their looks, um or how even they are in life
  48. to
  49. um kind of make it better for one person and worse for the other person.
  50. But I think Selby just wants to level head them. I don't think he,
  51. uh, shares both stories to say that one had worse. So one had better.
  52. I just think he just shows the realism with everyone's life and that
  53. our problems are not to be overlooked and not to be compared,
  54. but to just be
  55. brought out and to just be, you know, an awareness. Um
  56. uh to say that I do think that
  57. Chalala
  58. did have less control over her life at a young age.
  59. But I think there was times where she could have had more control. Um
  60. even going back to when the army man had gave her a letter and,
  61. you know, she could have got married, she could have lived her life better.
  62. She could have potentially got out of Brooklyn New York.
  63. She could have found a man who really loved her.
  64. So I think
  65. her choosing her lifestyle over,
  66. um a better one is where
  67. that was on her and that where she could have had more control over her life.
  68. Um
  69. because again, she's in an environment where it feels comfortable to just,
  70. um,
  71. you know,
  72. be you and
  73. I'm not even going to say that was being her because I don't know, you know,
  74. none of us really know Charlie Law.
  75. She's a character that Shelby wrote about. But
  76. I think
  77. it was more comfortable for her to sit in
  78. an environment where she knew where she knew the
  79. in and outs where she knew the man where she knew how much money she would make.
  80. It was just comfortable and it was fast money.
  81. So her having to step out and sacrifice that
  82. not knowing what was coming next was her downfall.
  83. Um, after looking at the interview and sorry, reading the interview,
  84. um Selby responds to her control over her fate.
  85. Um, he definitely puts her fate on her.
  86. He does bring up the letter and how she
  87. just decided not to marry the man, even though obviously,
  88. that might have been the better option for her.
  89. He explains how she was captivated within
  90. her own environment and how she was mentally
  91. captivated within that environment and how she
  92. never saw anything further than that.
  93. And then I wanted to mention how we also read
  94. the review on the book from the New York Times and how he said that um
  95. these were these people like cha
  96. to law
  97. and like Georgette, they were never people who dreamed of anything more.
  98. They were people who dreamed of something that was near sight.
  99. And I did agree with that.
  100. I think people who only dream of things, something that they, sorry,
  101. I'm stuttering, but
  102. I do agree that
  103. the people who do
  104. um only hope for things that are like in touch like they can grab it
  105. aren't people who
  106. are gonna be the most successful in life because
  107. as a human being, you have to have ambitions to work hard and to reach things that
  108. you don't think you'll ever reach. And that sounds crazy. But I think it's real
  109. and
  110. I don't think
  111. Chala ever had ambitions to go further than Brooklyn New York.
  112. I think she just wants to stay in there,
  113. make as much money as she can and
  114. I don't know, live her life, you know, so
  115. it does, um, respond to her control as
  116. she just not caring about it. She didn't care about control. She didn't care about
  117. how she was. Look, she didn't care about her life really. She just cared about
  118. living
  119. if that makes sense. I don't think she cared about her overall life.
  120. She just cared about
  121. the day, the present day. So
  122. I think that was also a good uh point that so we
  123. did introduce and also the New York Times uh reviewer as well.
  124. Um
  125. And he also offers what went wrong for child the law. He tells us that
  126. maybe
  127. it was just a comfortable within her and her not being able to see past herself.
  128. And like again, the note her not
  129. just taking that letter and saying, you know what, I can have a better life,
  130. I can get out of this business.
  131. I can marry, I can love, I can have kids, you know.
  132. So I don't, I just don't think her goal of life was to
  133. fulfill anything
  134. um
  135. past
  136. than what she could see. I don't think it was something that
  137. she wanted to do.
  138. I just think it was something that she was just like, oh, it's too good to be true.
  139. And then again, it's like, how can you blame her?
  140. Someone who comes from a poor, poor environment
  141. where there's crime violence.
  142. Um,
  143. like I said, she had no parents, she had no support system. So
  144. it was like,
  145. so, um, yeah, just how can you blame her for them? Um How she turned out
  146. because no one's ever really been there for her. No one's showed her how to do things.
  147. No one's been her guidance, no one's been her parent.
  148. So it's just like she's had, she's had to navigate her whole life
  149. by herself. And I know that's a struggle within itself as well. So
  150. a part of me feels for her and a part of me is so sad and about her story because
  151. being a young girl and being vulnerable to these men, it's just sad. And um
  152. I do think that
  153. this was a lesson that so we definitely wanted to give to readers
  154. no matter how uncomfortable the story may have been for some people.
  155. I do think it's a lesson that
  156. there are people who live her life. This is not a made up story.
  157. There are people who live in these environments where
  158. they sell their body, they do things for money. They,
  159. they don't have any ambition in life.
  160. Their only goal is to live in the day and not live in the future.
  161. And I think that's where she went wrong in her life.
  162. Um Also to add about the story with uh Steven Alexander,
  163. like the very first discussion we had,
  164. I think their stories are very similar. Um
  165. You know, when the mother went to jail,
  166. the kids definitely definitely fell off because the guidance left them.
  167. The pressure of like having to do good in life was no longer there.
  168. And I think that's another thing that
  169. Chalala
  170. never had was someone who was on her like neck,
  171. not literally but metaphorically like
  172. someone who was like pushing her to be better.
  173. And I do think as humans, we need a sense of that at some point, not
  174. maybe as much as others, but I do think you need something to push you
  175. and if you don't have that push, you don't have that ambition.
  176. So
  177. I think that's what
  178. was similar between them two.
  179. Um Overall, I do think that um
  180. this her or sorry, the character of
  181. Chalala
  182. was
  183. definitely
  184. needed in his story. Um
  185. You know, um
  186. I just think it showed how
  187. a young girl
  188. like this in her environment, it just swallowed up so quickly because
  189. of no one, you know, and
  190. I know
  191. I'm sorry, I
  192. um
  193. OK, my thought was like, I know that some people might find it harsh to say that
  194. oh, like her life was on her.
  195. But I think as humans, like I said, the pressure, I think the pressure,
  196. if she had the pressure of thinking
  197. my life is on me
  198. and I need to do well for me,
  199. she might have turned out better.
  200. Um, but I don't think she ever thought of that. She might have just
  201. thought so shallow about things and I don't think she really delved into like
  202. how her life was or
  203. how she could just be something more,
  204. more than what she thought she could be.
  205. So, I do think that, um,
  206. overall
  207. Chalala
  208. did show less control and more control in her life.
  209. Um, she also
  210. could have turned her life around, she didn't want to and
  211. ultimately she was the fall of her own
  212. fate.
