00:02 - 00:05
Hello, this is Maddie from the South Whitley Community Public
00:05 - 00:10
Library and I have a paint pouring tutorial for you.
00:10 - 00:14
This goes along with our theme of painting without a
00:14 - 00:16
brush for june for kit of the Month club.
00:17 - 00:20
And it's a really easy way to create a fun
00:20 - 00:22
little canvas without a paintbrush.
00:23 - 00:28
So to start out with, I have your list of
00:28 - 00:29
materials you'll need.
00:30 - 00:35
You will definitely need newspaper, um any newspaper, preferably if
00:35 - 00:37
you're going to have it laid out, make sure that
00:37 - 00:41
there are a couple of layers um to avoid spills
00:41 - 00:42
and leakage.
00:43 - 00:44
Um That's always good.
00:45 - 00:46
Then you will definitely need paint.
00:47 - 00:51
I used this little um their little paint pots, they're
00:51 - 00:56
actually kids washable paint but they work fine, they are
00:56 - 00:58
water based and they do take a long time to
00:59 - 01:01
dry, especially for this project because we're going to be
01:02 - 01:04
using multiple layers of paint and it will be kind
01:04 - 01:06
of thick, so just be prepared for that.
01:06 - 01:10
This isn't something that you could probably do um with
01:10 - 01:13
kids and then just leave it out for a few
01:13 - 01:15
minutes and then expect it to be done.
01:15 - 01:17
It's going to take a while to dry but it's
01:18 - 01:18
worth it.
01:18 - 01:25
So um I used black, a light blue and a
01:25 - 01:28
like magenta fuchsia ish color.
01:28 - 01:30
Not quite purple but you know pinkish.
01:31 - 01:33
So those are the paint I used.
01:33 - 01:34
Next cups.
01:35 - 01:39
We used little dixie cups just like the bathroom sized
01:39 - 01:41
ones. Um You don't need much more than that because
01:42 - 01:44
you're going to be using a different cup for each
01:44 - 01:48
color. Um So you don't really necessarily need a big
01:48 - 01:50
cup. You can just use small ones.
01:51 - 01:55
Yeah. Next we have canvas now canvas for this.
01:56 - 02:00
We used just a standard four x 4 board canvas.
02:01 - 02:03
It is pre treated, it's primed white.
02:04 - 02:06
Um But other than that you can use pretty much
02:06 - 02:07
any canvas you have lying around.
02:08 - 02:10
Um Keep in mind that if it's a larger canvas
02:11 - 02:11
you need more paint.
02:12 - 02:14
And also um if you're gonna use a large canvas
02:15 - 02:18
you might wanna use a larger cup as your base.
02:19 - 02:22
These cups worked fine with the small canvases because it
02:22 - 02:24
is such a small cup so you can just set
02:24 - 02:25
it just like that.
02:27 - 02:27
But keep that in mind.
02:27 - 02:29
If you if you have a larger canvas you'll need
02:29 - 02:30
a bigger cup.
02:30 - 02:32
Maybe like a solo cup then for water.
02:33 - 02:37
Just water to thin down the paint what I'll show
02:37 - 02:39
you further on and then a straw.
02:40 - 02:42
We just have a regular old straw.
02:43 - 02:46
Um Not like barn straw but a drinking straw and
02:47 - 02:47
then paperclip.
02:49 - 02:51
Um That just helps you with the design.
02:51 - 02:53
It helps you monkey around with what you're doing.
02:54 - 02:55
Um It's just a fun tool.
02:56 - 02:58
It's like it creates a marbling effect, I'll show you
02:58 - 03:01
later. Um And some additional things.
03:01 - 03:04
Um I know I said paint without a brush but
03:05 - 03:07
I did use a mini paintbrush actually.
03:07 - 03:08
I used the end of it.
03:09 - 03:11
You probably can still see there's some paint on the
03:11 - 03:11
end of it.
03:12 - 03:15
Um I used it to dig the paint out of
03:15 - 03:16
the paint pot.
03:17 - 03:18
Um You can use anything, you can use a popsicle
03:19 - 03:22
stick, another straw, a spoon, it's whatever.
03:23 - 03:24
But I use the end of the paintbrush.
03:26 - 03:29
And of course where would we be without paper towel?
03:29 - 03:33
Because um yeah I kept getting paid on my, oh
03:33 - 03:34
I just did.
03:34 - 03:38
Huh? I got paint on my um on my hands
03:38 - 03:40
so you always need that.
03:40 - 03:41
So that's your list of materials.
03:42 - 03:45
So we'll get onto the actual tutorial.
03:46 - 03:50
Uh I started out like I showed you, I just
03:51 - 03:53
used a cup as the base um to keep it
03:53 - 03:55
off of the newspaper.
03:56 - 03:57
This helps because it helps it dry.
03:58 - 04:01
And also the underside, you'll get like little drips underneath.
04:02 - 04:03
And this allows it.
04:03 - 04:06
If you just had the canvas lying on the newspaper,
04:07 - 04:09
you would run into the problem of the paint drips
04:09 - 04:11
would get on the edge of the canvas against the
04:11 - 04:12
paper and it would stick to the paper.
04:13 - 04:15
Then you'll end up when it dries, You have to
04:15 - 04:16
peel it off of the newspaper and I get stuck.
04:17 - 04:19
So this just prevents that, it gives it like a
04:19 - 04:21
little pedestal and then you can just paint on top
04:22 - 04:24
of it, so that's your initial setup.
04:25 - 04:30
Uh And then you'll have um here we have, I
04:30 - 04:33
just took the paint pot and the paintbrush and I
04:33 - 04:34
emptied it out into one of the cups.
04:35 - 04:38
Um If possible, just use different cups for different colors
04:38 - 04:43
so that you won't get anything mixed up, then I
04:43 - 04:44
added water.
04:44 - 04:47
So this is kind of, you have to kind of
04:47 - 04:48
eyeball it.
04:48 - 04:50
I didn't I'm not going to include measurements just because
04:50 - 04:53
um it's kind of up to you, as long as
04:53 - 04:57
it ends up being something like this, this is like
04:58 - 05:01
sort of an oily bubbly consistency, it should be like
05:01 - 05:04
syrupy. So initially when you put the paint in the
05:04 - 05:07
cup it's going to be like gloopy, gloopy is probably
05:07 - 05:08
the best word I can think of.
05:08 - 05:11
Um But if you add a little bit of water
05:11 - 05:13
it's going to become more therapy.
05:14 - 05:15
And um oily.
05:16 - 05:19
So I went for oily, especially for black because I
05:19 - 05:21
wanted black to spread the most across the canvas because
05:22 - 05:23
black was like my base colour I was using.
05:24 - 05:27
Um So that's just a good way to start out
05:27 - 05:28
with like an oily consistency.
05:30 - 05:32
Next you'll just start pouring.
05:33 - 05:35
So paint pouring is just all that sounds like it's
05:36 - 05:38
just pouring paint on a canvas or whatever you can
05:38 - 05:39
paint on whatever you want.
05:40 - 05:43
Um But that's what it, that's what it looks like
05:43 - 05:47
to begin with, you just start going um I kind
05:47 - 05:48
of just went everywhere.
05:49 - 05:51
I didn't really have a clear path in mind, I
05:51 - 05:53
just thought it'd be fun to just swirl it around,
05:53 - 05:54
drop it everywhere.
05:55 - 05:59
Um So that's initially what you do and then as
05:59 - 06:02
you finish, just make sure you kind of spread it
06:02 - 06:04
out um depending on how many colours you're going to
06:04 - 06:06
use, I was going to use three, so I want
06:07 - 06:08
to definitely leave room for the other colors.
06:10 - 06:12
So after I finished with black and moved on to
06:12 - 06:16
blue, um I initially started, I think I've said initially
06:16 - 06:20
three times, I'm sorry about that, I like the word
06:20 - 06:20
initially I guess.
06:21 - 06:25
Uh So I I added the blue into like the
06:25 - 06:25
puddles of black.
06:26 - 06:29
Um and that kind of added like a poppy effect.
06:29 - 06:32
I don't know, it was kind of cool, um that's
06:32 - 06:34
what it ended up looking like, um That was cool,
06:35 - 06:36
I could have just left it like that, like I
06:36 - 06:38
think that looks cool, kind of minimal, but I think
06:39 - 06:40
it's you know, cool.
06:41 - 06:46
Uh And then I added the magenta e fuchsia color
06:46 - 06:50
um around the edges and as you can see the
06:51 - 06:54
the blue kind of swirled in with the with the
06:55 - 06:58
black really well because when you mix the paint with
06:58 - 07:01
the water, oh and I did, I didn't mix all
07:01 - 07:03
the colors with water, I just didn't take pictures of
07:04 - 07:07
me adding water to the blue or the fuchsia um
07:07 - 07:10
color. So you'll add water to all of them before
07:10 - 07:11
you start pouring.
07:11 - 07:15
But um they'll mix as you go so you'll kind
07:15 - 07:18
of get an understanding and a visual for what it's
07:18 - 07:21
going to look like eventually as you pour and I
07:21 - 07:26
went all the way around with the purple color and
07:26 - 07:30
then I went more with the black because as I
07:30 - 07:31
was looking at it, I thought I don't want this
07:32 - 07:34
to be like just a bunch of blue and purple
07:34 - 07:36
on top, like I want to add more black and
07:36 - 07:39
then I went back with the blue also so you
07:39 - 07:41
can see it just is it's just a swirl of
07:41 - 07:45
paint like it's all over the place um Now to
07:45 - 07:47
manipulate your canvas into making it more marble.
07:48 - 07:51
E you can use the paper clip.
07:52 - 07:56
So the paperclip if you've ever made a cake cheesecake
07:57 - 08:00
brownie mix where you'll take the knife um and go
08:00 - 08:02
through the batter and sort of swirl.
08:03 - 08:04
I guess I could do it this way you kind
08:04 - 08:06
of go up and down and swirl around.
08:06 - 08:08
You kind of make like a I don't know like
08:08 - 08:10
a a swirl pattern I guess.
08:11 - 08:13
Um This is what it looks like, you can kind
08:13 - 08:16
of see it um As you go back and forth
08:16 - 08:18
with a paper clip you'll create that effect just like
08:18 - 08:20
you would like a knife through batter or whatever.
08:21 - 08:22
Um So that adds a nice touch.
08:23 - 08:25
And then also I didn't quite get the paint all
08:25 - 08:28
the way to the edges of the canvas so to
08:28 - 08:31
ensure that without touching it too much I was able
08:31 - 08:31
to use a straw.
08:33 - 08:34
This is a great angle of me.
08:34 - 08:38
Um But it's just me blowing on the canvas with
08:38 - 08:38
a straw.
08:38 - 08:42
Um And air just allows that manipulation to like push
08:42 - 08:44
and as you'll see some of the paint did drip
08:44 - 08:44
off obviously.
08:45 - 08:47
Um And that's why we have the newspaper, the several
08:48 - 08:48
layers of newspaper.
08:49 - 08:50
I think I did like I didn't unfold it, I
08:50 - 08:53
just left it folded so They're like four layers of
08:53 - 08:54
paper there to protect the countertop.
08:57 - 08:59
And this is what I ended up with.
09:00 - 09:04
I just left it kind of as is I didn't
09:04 - 09:08
really manipulate it further after I did that swirl effect
09:08 - 09:10
with the paper clip and then after I blew on
09:10 - 09:12
it to get to the paint all the way to
09:13 - 09:13
the edges.
09:13 - 09:16
I just left it like that and I was satisfied
09:17 - 09:17
with it.
09:17 - 09:18
I don't know it looks kind of cool.
09:19 - 09:21
I think it looks cool anyway but there's my example
09:22 - 09:24
for you and then I left it out in the
09:25 - 09:28
sun. Um I found a sunny spot here in the
09:28 - 09:32
library and I uh left it to dry as I
09:33 - 09:36
mentioned this is water based paint and there is a
09:36 - 09:37
lot of it on this campus depending on how much
09:38 - 09:39
you used and how many layers.
09:39 - 09:40
I used a lot of layers.
09:41 - 09:43
So um it's actually I can see it right now.
09:44 - 09:44
It's over there.
09:45 - 09:48
Um it's probably going to take several hours to dry.
09:49 - 09:51
Um I looked it up online and it said water
09:51 - 09:55
based paint usually takes like an hour but that's if
09:55 - 09:56
you're actually using a brush and it's one layer.
09:57 - 09:59
So just be prepared that if you're going to leave
09:59 - 10:02
it in the sun it might take a few hours.
10:02 - 10:04
But then it will be dry and then you can
10:05 - 10:06
frame it, display it whatever you want.
10:07 - 10:09
So hope you enjoy paint pouring.
10:09 - 10:10
Thank you.
