00:03 - 00:04
everyone. This is Nicole Thompson.
00:05 - 00:07
I'm going to be talking about assistive technology for education
00:08 - 00:10
specifically using google chrome and apps.
00:11 - 00:12
Apps and extensions.
00:16 - 00:16
All right.
00:16 - 00:18
So we're gonna be talking about who can benefit from
00:18 - 00:19
this assistive technology.
00:20 - 00:24
Why use google chrome apps and extensions instead of another
00:25 - 00:28
assistive technology and how teachers specifically can use this assistive
00:28 - 00:32
technology. All right.
00:32 - 00:34
So I want to specifically focus on how students struggling
00:35 - 00:37
with reading and writing can benefit from assistive technology.
00:38 - 00:45
Um Students who so students with issues in reading writing
00:46 - 00:50
reading and writing benefit from google chrome reading and writing
00:50 - 00:51
extensions and apps.
00:51 - 00:54
So this could be students with dyslexia, students with vision
00:54 - 00:55
impairment, students with A.
00:56 - 00:56
D. H.
00:56 - 00:58
D. And other learning disabilities.
00:59 - 01:01
This could also just be students who behind in grade
01:02 - 01:03
level in reading and writing.
01:07 - 01:08
All right.
01:08 - 01:09
So types of chrome tools for riding.
01:10 - 01:12
I have a link right here to a great website.
01:13 - 01:15
Um that has tools for reading.
01:16 - 01:20
I did not realize before this presentation that when I'm
01:20 - 01:23
in presentation mode, this link does not work, so I'd
01:23 - 01:28
be more than happy to send it out um instead
01:29 - 01:31
of just send it out for future reference.
01:32 - 01:40
So the types of chrome tools for writing would be
01:40 - 01:47
things like using um voice commands, using talk to text
01:48 - 01:49
instead of having to type everything.
01:50 - 01:54
Using an app that would allow the students to make
01:55 - 01:59
notes within the different lessons or even through their voice
01:59 - 02:00
within the different lessons.
02:03 - 02:05
This could also be used in groups, let's say if
02:06 - 02:10
the students are collaborating and they're riding together, they can
02:10 - 02:15
use this to collaborate and do have their different ideas
02:16 - 02:19
on the same in the same format.
02:21 - 02:24
The types of chrome tools for reading, there's also a
02:24 - 02:28
link in this, I will open it up but these
02:29 - 02:30
actually do not work either in here.
02:30 - 02:32
So I will also email those out.
02:32 - 02:36
But these are two really great resources for different links
02:36 - 02:42
in chrome for reading and the reading is more for,
02:44 - 02:46
let's say if there's something on the page that the
02:46 - 02:48
student doesn't understand, there are certain apps that you can
02:48 - 02:50
use where you click on the word and it reads
02:50 - 02:53
it out loud for you um which can be a
02:54 - 02:56
lot of help for students who are having trouble reading
02:56 - 02:58
and comprehending certain things and there are more of an
02:58 - 02:59
auditory learner.
03:00 - 03:04
Also in reading there can be, it can read a
03:04 - 03:05
whole page.
03:05 - 03:11
So students who are visually impaired, this is a big
03:11 - 03:11
help for them also.
03:20 - 03:23
All right, so next we are going to go to
03:24 - 03:26
why google chrome apps and extensions.
03:29 - 03:31
So one of the reasons that we should utilize Google
03:32 - 03:35
Chrome apps and extensions is that it's actually easier for
03:35 - 03:36
teachers to learn and use.
03:37 - 03:39
This is because of COVID-19.
03:39 - 03:42
Last year, the teachers have been working with students on
03:42 - 03:46
chromebooks. Um This means that they are most likely familiar
03:46 - 03:46
with this software.
03:48 - 03:52
Also, I've found that many students and teachers already use
03:53 - 03:55
google pretty frequently and they have things like google drive
03:56 - 03:58
and other apps that google offers.
03:59 - 04:00
So they're definitely familiarity.
04:01 - 04:03
Is there alright?
04:04 - 04:06
Using google chrome is also cost effective.
04:08 - 04:10
So like I said before, the students have um chromebooks
04:11 - 04:15
and um many of the reading and writing assistive technology
04:16 - 04:20
on google chrome apps, they're free to educators and students,
04:21 - 04:21
so that's huge.
04:26 - 04:30
Alright. Um also after COVID-19 accommodations last year, each student
04:31 - 04:32
now has accessibility to their own chromebook.
04:33 - 04:36
So this allows easy access to the extensions and apps
04:36 - 04:38
when we need them and it's a pretty easy way
04:39 - 04:42
to just um just add them on there.
04:42 - 04:45
It doesn't take very much work and it's just simple
04:45 - 04:48
altogether. So it's cost effective and it's pretty simple.
04:51 - 04:55
All right and now to how teachers can use this
04:55 - 04:58
assistive technology of google chrome extensions.
04:58 - 05:02
Apps and apps in the classroom so push through reading
05:02 - 05:02
and writing.
05:03 - 05:07
Um The previous listed google chrome apps which are in
05:07 - 05:10
those links that I will send out extensions can be
05:10 - 05:14
used to assist students in reading and writing when they
05:14 - 05:17
are engaging in reading themselves or writing on their own
05:17 - 05:19
also and one on one lessons with you.
05:19 - 05:23
So when you're working with them directly um you can
05:23 - 05:25
sit there with them, show them how to use it.
05:25 - 05:30
They can show you that they are working through things
05:30 - 05:32
and they're using this to assist them along the way
05:34 - 05:35
and also in groups of peers.
05:36 - 05:43
So when students are reading or collaboratively riding um and
05:43 - 05:46
groups then it's useful for them.
05:50 - 05:50
All right.
05:50 - 05:51
And talking about students.
05:52 - 05:52
E. P.
05:53 - 05:55
S. Google chrome and apps and extensions can be included
05:56 - 05:56
in the students I.
05:57 - 05:57
P. S.
05:57 - 06:01
So this can be listed as students requiring advanced technology
06:02 - 06:04
for assisting with reading and writing.
06:11 - 06:11
All right.
06:12 - 06:14
And that is it for my crazy video of um
06:15 - 06:18
why google chrome apps and extensions should be used as
06:19 - 06:19
assistive technology.
