00:01 - 00:03
Hello. My name is Ana Castillo and I will be
00:03 - 00:04
covering my researching this presentation.
00:06 - 00:08
So for my research I decided to do social media
00:09 - 00:10
in cosmetic surgery.
00:11 - 00:15
I believe that social media is growing every day and
00:15 - 00:18
it's not going anywhere so supportive for us to understand
00:19 - 00:23
and know how it's affecting our youth and everybody around
00:23 - 00:25
us. Yeah.
00:26 - 00:30
A literature review consisted of looking at research that tied
00:30 - 00:38
cosmetic surgery and social media such as celebrities, athletes and
00:38 - 00:43
just your basic every day to day advertisement popularity of
00:43 - 00:47
social media photo editing has had a significant impact on
00:47 - 00:48
the field of cosmetic surgery.
00:50 - 00:54
For example, a survey of facial plastic surgeons found that
00:54 - 00:58
55% of surgeons reported seeing patients who requested to improve
00:59 - 01:01
appearances in selfies.
01:02 - 01:08
So in today's world we live with filters, filters is
01:08 - 01:13
just a little bit uh what social media is kind
01:13 - 01:17
of throwing out there to society like this can be
01:17 - 01:19
you like you can look like this.
01:19 - 01:21
And I believe that this is just a small little
01:22 - 01:26
way of starting advertisement without people even realizing it.
01:27 - 01:29
Just the other day, I was looking through my filters
01:30 - 01:32
and I'm scrolling through them and I get a filter
01:32 - 01:33
that gives me great eyes.
01:35 - 01:37
Never even knew what I looked like with gray eyes.
01:37 - 01:43
After that I found myself researching permanent solution to for
01:43 - 01:46
me to have gray eyes and even me as an
01:46 - 01:49
adult, very comfortable with who I am and I love
01:50 - 01:50
the way that I look.
01:51 - 01:55
But when you get to experience little things like that,
01:55 - 01:59
it definitely starts to bring in some curiosity of like
01:59 - 02:02
man, I couldn't walk around every day with gray eyes.
02:02 - 02:05
There's no need for me to just have a filter
02:05 - 02:07
when I can look like this.
02:07 - 02:07
Every day.
02:10 - 02:13
As I was looking at my research, I intended to
02:13 - 02:15
only focus on cosmetic surgery.
02:16 - 02:20
But it's important to understand how social media is able
02:20 - 02:24
to influence people so much so that they're willing to
02:24 - 02:26
commit to cosmetic surgery.
02:27 - 02:29
And we start to look at the how and the
02:29 - 02:33
why this is where the psychological problems come into play.
02:34 - 02:38
Because social media has such a big influence on everybody
02:38 - 02:44
differently that you get to experience depression and anxiety just
02:44 - 02:47
by simply feeling like you don't fit in by feeling
02:47 - 02:51
that you're not receiving the attention that everybody else is.
02:52 - 02:56
And that's really what a major key, especially for our
02:56 - 03:03
youth, because our Children's minds are so open to whatever
03:03 - 03:03
they see.
03:04 - 03:07
I believe that when they see other people getting all
03:08 - 03:11
of this attention and all of these likes, they're willing
03:11 - 03:13
to do whatever they have to do.
03:13 - 03:17
And I say youth, but in today's society really goes
03:17 - 03:23
for all ages, people see other people getting attention and
03:23 - 03:26
and becoming rich just by how many people are watching
03:27 - 03:29
them. They're willing to do whatever that they have to
03:29 - 03:32
do to get those same likes to get those same
03:32 - 03:35
views. And most of the times is it is just
03:36 - 03:40
simply fitting that cookie cutter image of what beauty is
03:40 - 03:40
supposed to be.
03:41 - 03:44
And most of the times it's physical was, you know,
03:45 - 03:48
body wise man are supposed to be tall and muscular,
03:48 - 03:52
while women are supposed to have big breasts and a
03:52 - 03:55
slim waist and taking the thighs.
03:56 - 04:00
So you're you're willing to do whatever in cosmetic surgery
04:00 - 04:05
is it's nothing, it's just a small step toward where
04:05 - 04:08
it's the bigger picture which is gaining the follower is
04:09 - 04:12
gaining the likes having all that attention on you constantly.
04:15 - 04:16
For my research.
04:16 - 04:18
I decided to do a agree disagree questionnaire.
04:19 - 04:22
I believe this was the best way for me to
04:22 - 04:24
get clearer answers.
04:25 - 04:28
and I was able to analyze not only the overall
04:29 - 04:31
project but I was able to look at each individual
04:32 - 04:37
question. So most of the questions focused on not not
04:38 - 04:41
only how did you get the idea of getting cosmetic
04:42 - 04:43
surgery but also why?
04:44 - 04:47
So I try to cover most of it.
04:47 - 04:51
And I also focused on covering if you would be
04:51 - 04:52
willing to do it again.
04:52 - 04:55
Like if you were you happy with your results, would
04:55 - 04:56
you do something different?
04:57 - 04:58
How would you do something different?
04:59 - 05:03
So I think that that's important in order to turn
05:03 - 05:05
my data into numerical data.
05:06 - 05:12
I I analysed research questions by a five point scale
05:12 - 05:18
system with strong degree being one And strongly disagree being
05:18 - 05:19
five points.
05:19 - 05:24
So as we titled titled up two points the person
05:24 - 05:27
would be the lowest numbers or more likely to have
05:27 - 05:33
a correlation of social media affecting their results of cosmetic
05:33 - 05:38
surgery. Where people with the higher points, there was more
05:38 - 05:43
of a disconnect more of a difference and the reason
05:44 - 05:47
on why they committed to their surgery.
05:50 - 05:53
The results as as expected, there was definitely a positive
05:54 - 06:00
correlation with social media in cosmetic surgery also with depression
06:01 - 06:02
and anxiety.
06:04 - 06:06
So the data revealed that women were more open to
06:06 - 06:09
surgery in order to achieve their desired body.
06:10 - 06:12
The study would lead to questions as to how social
06:12 - 06:16
media is it back and teens, kids and adults.
06:18 - 06:21
I believe that it's important to know what we're up
06:21 - 06:25
against. The generation after us was raised completely different.
06:26 - 06:30
I have a sister that is only five years younger
06:30 - 06:33
than me and she lives on her phone.
06:34 - 06:35
I mean we go out to eat.
06:36 - 06:39
She's taking pictures of her meals were getting dressed, she's
06:39 - 06:42
taking pictures of her getting dressed once where you know,
06:42 - 06:47
it's it's completely different and even I find myself sometimes
06:47 - 06:50
being a stranger to it and it's so normal for
06:50 - 06:53
it's so natural for her to pull out her phone
06:53 - 06:56
and take a picture of everything that we eat.
06:56 - 07:01
Take a picture of everything that we see and and
07:01 - 07:03
I'm only a couple of years younger than her.
07:04 - 07:07
But this is why we need to focus on how
07:07 - 07:11
society is changing, how society is adapting to our new
07:11 - 07:17
technology to our new forms of media and finally our
07:18 - 07:22
discussion. So the agree disagree survey that I chose to
07:22 - 07:24
do. I believe it was the best way to collect
07:25 - 07:27
the data that I was needing to collect.
07:28 - 07:33
However, there are limitations to it and this one in
07:33 - 07:38
particular, it is the measurement that can be compromised with
07:38 - 07:39
social desirability.
07:40 - 07:44
Nobody really likes to admit that they're doing something because
07:44 - 07:45
of somebody else.
07:46 - 07:49
And today we are really big on being an individual.
07:50 - 07:53
Yet we're all following the same thing, right?
07:53 - 07:56
Because we're all seeing the same thing on social media.
07:57 - 07:58
So that's what we want to do.
07:59 - 08:00
That's what we want to be.
08:00 - 08:05
And in this case, perfect athletes and celebrities, they always
08:06 - 08:08
show the good, never show the bad.
08:08 - 08:12
So in everybody's eyes, they're living a perfect life.
08:14 - 08:14
Even me as a hairstylist.
08:15 - 08:19
I'll have clients that will come in and show me
08:19 - 08:24
somebody else's work and they want me to replicate the
08:24 - 08:27
same thing, but they'll tweak something here and there to
08:27 - 08:28
make it their own.
08:29 - 08:33
So we all want to be individuals and we all
08:33 - 08:36
want to be ourselves following somebody else's steps.
08:37 - 08:41
I hope that collecting all of this data and seeing
08:41 - 08:45
how big of an influence social media has on people,
08:47 - 08:51
we're able to investigate a little bit more on what
08:52 - 08:57
restrictions can be put in or how we can move
08:57 - 09:01
different as a society at all to make sure that
09:03 - 09:07
kids aren't exposed to what they're not supposed to be
09:08 - 09:13
and adults or being adults and responsible about what they
09:13 - 09:16
share and about what they post, because you never really
09:17 - 09:19
know who's watching and you don't know how they can
09:19 - 09:20
affect somebody else.
09:22 - 09:26
I personally believe that certain app should be for adults,
09:27 - 09:30
and certain app should be for kids as a hairstylist.
09:30 - 09:33
I post all of my work and I love to
09:33 - 09:37
see reviews and I love my clients sharing my work,
09:39 - 09:41
but that's not the same for everybody.
09:41 - 09:43
Everybody doesn't use social media the same.
09:44 - 09:49
And I think it's important for us to have that
09:49 - 09:53
responsibility on ourselves because in the thousands of followers and
09:53 - 09:57
the thousands of you don't know who's watching you, you
09:58 - 10:00
don't know what you say might affect somebody else.
10:01 - 10:03
And of course they can always remove themselves.
10:04 - 10:07
But when it's a kid and they're idolizing you without
10:07 - 10:10
you even knowing, then that's when it becomes a problem.
10:11 - 10:14
You might pose Pictures of you going out to drink
10:15 - 10:19
and now you have a 19 year old that thinks
10:19 - 10:21
it's cool to go out and get drunk.
10:22 - 10:25
And and because that's what they see you do and
10:25 - 10:27
your role model without even knowing it.
10:27 - 10:31
So it is definitely important for us to see how
10:32 - 10:35
social media is affecting everybody.
10:36 - 10:41
All the advertising, all the cosmetic surgery procedures that are
10:41 - 10:42
becoming more public.
10:44 - 10:48
And as I mentioned, even a simple pictures of going
10:49 - 10:53
out to drink, we have to come together for the
10:53 - 10:54
next generation to come.
10:55 - 10:57
So we could be able to help them in the
10:58 - 11:01
issues that they face which will always be a little
11:01 - 11:04
different than ours and moving.
11:05 - 11:08
I hope that research like mine and others that I
11:08 - 11:11
have put together, it's able to make a difference for
11:11 - 11:15
somebody. It's able to change somebody's mind or it's able
11:15 - 11:19
to help somebody understand why they feel the way that
11:19 - 11:19
they feel.
11:20 - 11:21
Nobody lives a perfect life.
11:22 - 11:24
Nobody has a cookie cutter image.
11:25 - 11:28
And even if you pay for it, you're not yourself,
11:28 - 11:29
you're not being you.
11:29 - 11:32
It's it's okay to live who you are and it's
11:32 - 11:33
okay to beat you.
11:34 - 11:36
And finally, I just want to say thank you.
11:37 - 11:38
I will let you guys look at my references.
11:40 - 11:42
Any feedback would be really appreciated.
11:44 - 11:45
This class was really helpful.
11:46 - 11:50
Usually research is one of my weakest subjects, but I
11:50 - 11:53
really did enjoy the breakdown of this class.
11:54 - 11:56
I think I was able to take this research projects
11:57 - 12:02
that myself and get a better understanding of what a
12:02 - 12:04
professional paper is supposed to look like.
12:05 - 12:08
This is my last class, since my last semester, I
12:08 - 12:13
will be graduating August 14, and I am hoping to
12:13 - 12:15
move on to get my Masters and eventually my PhD.
12:16 - 12:18
So this class has been very helpful.
12:19 - 12:19
Thank you.
