00:01 - 00:02
Hello, my name is Caylee's Giuffra.
00:03 - 00:06
So for my technology trend I did zoom.
00:07 - 00:09
So this is zooms impact on education.
00:10 - 00:13
I feel like most people have had experience with zoom
00:13 - 00:18
especially from Covid 19, there's been so much online class
00:19 - 00:22
and everything, but first I'll just explain what zoom is.
00:23 - 00:26
So zoom is a video conferencing platform that allows people
00:27 - 00:28
to communicate with each other virtually.
00:29 - 00:33
Um, a lot of professors and even people in the
00:33 - 00:38
workplace have utilized this um to use for online education
00:39 - 00:41
since everything has been so different with Covid.
00:42 - 00:47
So some of the advantages, um, it is easily accessible
00:48 - 00:48
from any device.
00:49 - 00:50
You can do it on your computer or your phone.
00:52 - 00:54
Um it doesn't require you to have an account.
00:54 - 00:58
So if you need to get on for lecture or
00:58 - 01:00
a class or anything like that, as long as you
01:00 - 01:02
have the link, you can just click on it and
01:03 - 01:04
it'll you'll go right to it.
01:05 - 01:06
It's easy to use and navigate.
01:08 - 01:09
From my experience.
01:10 - 01:11
I had a lot of use with it.
01:11 - 01:15
I didn't have any problems getting on for a class
01:16 - 01:16
and everything like that.
01:17 - 01:20
Um and then some of the features, it includes our
01:20 - 01:21
breakout rooms and screen sharing.
01:22 - 01:26
So the breakout rooms were nice for lecture because you
01:26 - 01:29
can go into smaller groups and discuss what you're learning
01:29 - 01:32
and it's kind of similar to being in class and
01:33 - 01:34
talking about the topics with other people.
01:35 - 01:38
And then the screen sharing is useful for lecture because
01:39 - 01:43
if a professor has a power point or a picture,
01:43 - 01:45
anything like that, they can share their screen to show
01:47 - 01:49
the whole class and then this is just a picture
01:49 - 01:52
of what um the bottom of your screen looks like
01:52 - 01:54
if you are on a zoom call.
01:55 - 02:00
So some statistics Zoom has over 300 million participants daily
02:01 - 02:04
in the annual meeting minutes or 300 trillion.
02:05 - 02:08
Um I thought these statistics were pretty crazy and I
02:08 - 02:12
included this chart Because as you can see from 2020
02:13 - 02:19
to 2021, it's skyrocketed Um which is obviously from COVID-19
02:20 - 02:24
because Zoom has been so useful to use um since
02:24 - 02:27
people can no longer do as many in person things
02:30 - 02:32
and then my experience with zoom.
02:33 - 02:39
So with COVID-19 happening, my freshman year of college, I
02:40 - 02:43
had my end of my freshman year all online and
02:43 - 02:45
then all of last year, my sophomore year of college
02:46 - 02:48
online. So I used to zoom almost every day for
02:49 - 02:49
all my classes.
02:50 - 02:53
Um I thought it was very helpful that, I mean
02:54 - 02:57
we could at least have some kind of class and
02:57 - 03:02
be able to discuss with other classmates and everything like
03:02 - 03:06
that. Um It also was nice to just be able
03:06 - 03:08
to do it from the comfort of my own home
03:08 - 03:11
and just be able to stay in bed and get
03:11 - 03:12
on lecture.
03:13 - 03:18
Um And I did like the breakout rooms because you
03:18 - 03:21
could discuss topics with classmates and things like that, but
03:21 - 03:23
there was some technical issues with that.
03:24 - 03:24
Um a couple of times.
03:25 - 03:30
My professor couldn't get it to work, things like that,
03:30 - 03:32
people couldn't get onto the lecture, so we did have
03:33 - 03:34
some technical issues sometimes.
03:35 - 03:38
So that got annoying at times and it would take
03:38 - 03:38
up class time.
03:40 - 03:42
Um, and then I also just made me very lazy.
03:43 - 03:45
I feel like I didn't have anywhere to go.
03:45 - 03:48
All my classes were online, so I feel like it
03:48 - 03:52
made me more lazy and not as motivated to do
03:52 - 03:56
things and just lack of attention to being too sometimes
03:56 - 04:00
I would doze off or even just have trouble paying
04:01 - 04:03
attention since it was all online and there's not a
04:03 - 04:04
person in front of you talking.
04:07 - 04:12
Oh, so education zoom has become a huge advantage for
04:12 - 04:13
people during the pandemic.
04:14 - 04:16
It has allowed teachers and professors to still have the
04:16 - 04:18
ability to teach class virtually and safely.
04:19 - 04:21
Um, teachers had to learn how to adapt to online
04:21 - 04:24
platforms and be creative to still have kids engaged in
04:24 - 04:25
their lessons.
04:26 - 04:28
I feel like it applies for college students as well,
04:29 - 04:32
but I feel like definitely with elementary students to um
04:32 - 04:36
from my experience as well, having three younger brothers, I
04:36 - 04:38
know they had a very hard time being at home
04:38 - 04:41
and being able to pay attention and have the teachers
04:42 - 04:45
keep them engaged in class because there are a lot
04:45 - 04:49
of distractions just in houses and things like that.
04:50 - 04:54
I included this picture because it was a trend going
04:54 - 04:58
around. Um, I thought it was cute for because also
04:58 - 05:01
this was very hard on teachers as well, especially if
05:01 - 05:03
you're not used to this.
05:03 - 05:06
Technology teachers had to base change all their lesson plans
05:07 - 05:09
and base it on zoom and things like that.
05:09 - 05:12
So kids were turning off all their screens and then
05:12 - 05:14
turning them on at the same time and just thanking
05:14 - 05:18
professors for everything they've done during this hard time.
05:18 - 05:21
So I thought that was very cute.
05:23 - 05:26
Mhm. So some disadvantages of zoom.
05:27 - 05:30
I've already talked about some of these, but you have
05:30 - 05:33
a high amount of screen time, especially if you have
05:34 - 05:39
four or 5 classes a day, 1-2 hours long, you're
05:39 - 05:41
on your computer for a long amount of time and
05:42 - 05:44
I know it that can be bad for you just
05:45 - 05:51
to be on you're computer and everything like that for
05:51 - 05:51
that long.
05:52 - 05:54
Um It can be socially isolating.
05:54 - 05:58
I mean you're in your room just on zoom all
05:58 - 06:03
day. Um It's just a lot not having a lot
06:03 - 06:04
of social interaction.
06:04 - 06:05
It can be really hard on people.
06:06 - 06:07
I know that was hard on people as well with
06:07 - 06:07
the pandemic.
06:08 - 06:12
Um So I would say the main use is for
06:12 - 06:13
lectures for zoom.
06:13 - 06:16
So I feel like it was utilized more with college
06:16 - 06:19
students because we are used to just sitting there and
06:19 - 06:23
having someone lecture and not as engaged as compared to
06:23 - 06:26
like an elementary school student being younger.
06:26 - 06:27
There's a lot of distractions.
06:28 - 06:30
They do a lot more hands on stuff and they
06:30 - 06:31
need more of that social interaction.
06:32 - 06:34
So I feel like it was a lot harder for
06:34 - 06:35
younger kids.
06:36 - 06:40
Um something I discovered during my research is there's zoom
06:41 - 06:45
bombing, which is basically kids were hijacking zoom lectures and
06:46 - 06:52
going on disrupting class being um saying very explicit things,
06:53 - 06:53
things like that.
06:54 - 06:56
So that became a big problem.
06:57 - 07:01
Um Disengagement is another one, just people being distracted, not
07:01 - 07:02
paying attention.
07:03 - 07:07
I admit that happened to me sometimes on zoom lectures
07:07 - 07:10
as well and then lack of energy and unmotivated, like
07:10 - 07:14
I talked about, I just feel like this made me
07:14 - 07:19
very lazy and just in person, it's a lot more
07:19 - 07:23
engaging and makes me more motivated to do things all
07:24 - 07:26
day compared to me sitting in bed all day listening
07:27 - 07:27
to lectures.
07:30 - 07:32
And here are my references.
07:33 - 07:36
I had four different ones, and that is my presentation
07:37 - 07:37
on soon.
07:38 - 07:38
Thank you.
