00:01 - 00:01
Hello,
00:01 - 00:04
I'm mia Thompson and for my interview project I
00:04 - 00:07
decided to interview julie win on her Vietnamese culture.
00:11 - 00:14
Julie has lived in Tumwater Washington since she was six.
00:15 - 00:19
This is for her aunt, decided it was time for their whole family to leave Vietnam
00:19 - 00:22
once the Vietnam war was commenced.
00:28 - 00:32
Some interesting findings and realizations I had during this interview was
00:33 - 00:35
julie has two different personas when referring to
00:35 - 00:38
her household behavior compared to her public behavior.
00:40 - 00:44
Another one is when she was little, her parents resorted to spanking her
00:44 - 00:47
because they believed this was the best way for her to learn.
00:48 - 00:49
Another one is
00:50 - 00:53
her last name is a common Vietnamese last name.
00:53 - 00:56
So many people believe she's related to others with the same name,
00:56 - 00:58
especially in our small town.
00:59 - 01:03
Younger Vietnamese generations americanize their interactions
01:03 - 01:06
while their older generations are more so glad to
01:06 - 01:09
just see their own kind in this small town.
01:10 - 01:14
Another one is is if julie were to put her grandparents in a nursing home,
01:14 - 01:17
they would feel disrespected because they are
01:17 - 01:19
not showing them respect and attention.
01:20 - 01:22
Most of their grandparents believe that they should
01:22 - 01:25
be taking care of them at their old age
01:31 - 01:35
in order to communicate effectively with someone from the Vietnamese culture.
01:36 - 01:38
It is extremely important to be patient
01:39 - 01:41
patients allows them to explain
01:42 - 01:44
with time, so they're not being interrupted.
01:45 - 01:47
I learned at the beginning when I interrupted julie,
01:47 - 01:50
it leads to pauses in our conversations
01:50 - 01:53
because when I would ask her questions mid sentence,
01:53 - 01:55
it would throw her off and kind of make her confused.
01:56 - 02:00
Another very important aspect to focus on is when they are done with their response.
02:01 - 02:05
That is the time to clear your confusion, not during their mid response.
02:06 - 02:07
So they can like
02:09 - 02:10
respond to that,
02:10 - 02:14
not respond to both questions while they're trying to answer the first question.
02:14 - 02:15
Lastly,
02:15 - 02:19
I strongly suggest showing your appreciation towards them with polite manners,
02:19 - 02:23
julie knew I was appreciative towards her time with my polite manners,
02:23 - 02:27
so she wasn't comfortable in my home and was not hesitant to do the second interview.
02:31 - 02:33
That was my interview. Thank you for listening.
