  1. Hi, everybody.
  2. Today we're going to talk about Drum Corps International, okay?
  3. Or D C I for short.
  4. Okay. So first of all to talk about Drum Corps
  5. International, we need to know what it iss Okay, so
  6. it is where a group of hand selected performers get
  7. to travel across the U.
  8. S. A.
  9. Okay, one day you could be in your in Texas
  10. the other day.
  11. You could be in Mississippi or Arkansas or California or
  12. Tennessee, maybe even Chicago.
  13. Okay, so this happens from June all the way to
  14. August. So we have June, July and August.
  15. Okay, so for three months, you are traveling across the
  16. U. S.
  17. A. You are not with your family.
  18. Okay, So you are with other group.
  19. Sorry with other people around your age.
  20. Okay, There are two categories where in each group are
  21. crowned the champion.
  22. Okay, so you have your world class, and then you
  23. have your open class.
  24. All right, let's talk about instruments in D.
  25. C. Uh, okay.
  26. There are brass instruments, and we have percussion instruments.
  27. Okay. I'm gonna go ahead and have Miss Foley pause
  28. the video, and she's going to see if we remember
  29. who is in the brass family and the percussion family.
  30. And we are back in three to one zero, waiting
  31. for eyes on me.
  32. All right, so next what we're going to do is
  33. we're going to watch a video of two percussion groups
  34. having a friendly and fun competition, and they're going to
  35. be showing off their rhythmic skills.
  36. Okay. I want you to notice the difference between both
  37. groups. I don't want you to see how they're dressed,
  38. how they're playing.
  39. If they're together, if they're sticks, air together, if they're
  40. moving their feet, Um, all sorts of things.
  41. Okay, So I'm gonna go ahead and have Miss Foley
  42. pause video so she could go ahead and show you,
  43. uh, the video.
  44. All right, friends, we are back.
  45. If you notice this picture here on the bottom, that
  46. is actually the group that I marched in.
  47. Okay? Yes, I did march in drum corps.
  48. Okay. Now, aside from the brass and percussion, we do
  49. have another important aspect.
  50. Okay, Another important category.
  51. Okay. We have what is called color guard.
  52. Okay. I like to think of the color guard as
  53. the visual representation of the music.
  54. Okay, so they use props.
  55. OK, props could be anything from a flag to a
  56. very, very big broom.
  57. Or maybe even some fabric.
  58. Okay, they there are endless possibilities.
  59. Okay, Now, I want you to listen to the first
  60. couple of minutes of Ode to Joy.
  61. Okay? And I want you to listen very, very closely,
  62. because in the second video that we're going to watch
  63. it actually comes out in that video.
  64. Okay, I want you to see if there's any differences
  65. between the music or if it's exactly the same.
  66. Okay. Now, along with the music, I want you to
  67. see what the color Guard members are doing.
  68. Okay, so after you watch the video, I want you
  69. to describe to Miss Foley into each other.
  70. What? You saw that the color Guard members did.
  71. Alright, friends were back.
  72. Now moving along from the color guard, I want to
  73. tell you how we get to be crowned champion.
  74. Okay, So if you remember, there are two categories, okay?
  75. We have world class and open class.
  76. Okay. Each of the categories has these three process of
  77. crowning the champion.
  78. Okay, think about NFL or basketball, you know, or tennis.
  79. Hockey okay, each.
  80. Um, each sport has their process of elimination.
  81. Okay, so for football Okay, let's say there are 12
  82. groups, Okay?
  83. We have 12 groups.
  84. Ah, nde.
  85. They compete against each other, and the closer we get
  86. to the Super Bowl, they are eliminated.
  87. OK, so it's the similar with both world class and
  88. open class.
  89. Okay, Right now, we're going to focus on world class.
  90. Okay. Now, before I go on, world class is like
  91. the cherry on top.
  92. Okay? They are the best of the best.
  93. Okay. And open class is also very, very good, but
  94. not as good as world class.
  95. Okay, Just an f Y I For your information, doing
  96. this activity is not free.
  97. Okay, so which means we would have to pay to
  98. be in a part of the group.
  99. Okay, Now you're wondering why we have to pay to
  100. be part of this group.
  101. Okay, well, let's think about it for a little bit.
  102. Let's think about all the traveling okay on DWI travel
  103. on Busses.
  104. Okay. So if we don't have enough money for a
  105. very nice bus, maybe a charter bus where you have
  106. comfortable seats, um, we would maybe have to be in
  107. a school bus, okay?
  108. And school Busses aren't comfortable, right?
  109. No, we want the very best.
  110. Okay, so we have Transportacion, which is the bus.
  111. Is the gas okay?
  112. We have a food truck, which is where the kitchen
  113. staff makes the food.
  114. Okay. And there is a lot of other things that
  115. you do not see.
  116. Okay, that's all behind the scenes.
  117. Okay, We can talk about it more when I'm there.
  118. All right?
  119. So, going back to world class, the the process of
  120. elimination goes like this.
  121. Okay, let's say there is 25 or 30 groups.
  122. Okay, So out of those 30 groups Onley 12 get
  123. to go to the final round.
  124. Okay, so the goal is to get as close to
  125. 100 points as possible.
  126. Now, there are several judges.
  127. Okay, that grade the percussion, the brass and the color
  128. guard. Okay.
  129. After they have those scores, Um, the one closest to
  130. 100 is champion.
  131. Okay, there is gold, silver and bronze.
  132. Okay, So you're going to watch this video of the
  133. process of the awards assembly.
  134. Okay. I want you to notice the different groups on
  135. what they are doing okay.
  136. And we are back in three to and one.
  137. All right, So now that we've learned about drum corps,
  138. I want Thio show you and tell you a few
  139. of my stories and drum corps.
  140. Okay? You're going to see pictures of me.
  141. Please do not life.
  142. I'm just kidding.
  143. You cannot.
  144. All right.
  145. So my very first year, I joined D.
  146. C. I.
  147. We did a show about the Wizard of Oz, and
  148. I was super super excited because growing up, I would
  149. watch The Wizard of Oz so much okay.
  150. And moving along.
  151. All right, so I want to talk about teachers, Okay?
  152. No, I'm not in this picture, but these people okay,
  153. These, uh, like I said, you are with each other
  154. for three months, okay?
  155. And you do.
  156. Ah, you do grow friendships.
  157. Okay? And I want you to see this person.
  158. The person in the black.
  159. Um, he was actually my teacher for all of the
  160. years that I was there.
  161. Okay? And he helped me understand the process.
  162. He helped me learn about the activity.
  163. He made me a better player.
  164. Ah, better marcher on an overall.
  165. A better person.
  166. Okay, so before we actually tour.
  167. Which means before we actually go across the country to
  168. compete outside of that eso we have from October 2
  169. May. So all of those months, we meet once a
  170. month to practice.
  171. Okay? And there I am practicing.
  172. I think somebody was telling instructions or what have you
  173. and I was looking that way.
  174. Okay. Moving along.
  175. So behind the scene, after being a part of the
  176. group for so long?
  177. A The director actually trusted.
  178. Trusted me to be a part of the future for
  179. the group.
  180. So this is where we made decisions, talked about the
  181. show possibilities.
  182. Um, we talked about a lot of other things.
  183. Finances. We talked about leadership, Um, great group of people
  184. moving along again.
  185. Same group of people.
  186. Um, and I just do want to stress that you
  187. do make a lot of friends.
  188. Even if you're in the If you're in the activity
  189. for just one year, remember, you're with each other all
  190. day for three months on.
  191. I'm not kidding you.
  192. All day.
  193. We would wake up at seven and sleep at 11
  194. every day.
  195. Yep. I was that crazy to do that.
  196. Who wants to be up from 7 a.m. All the
  197. way to 11 p.m. And we're outside in the heat
  198. were marching were playing, but it was a lot of
  199. fun. Okay, thes friendships last a long time, even a
  200. lifetime. Some of these people here, um, they're doing their
  201. own thing.
  202. But I do talk to them often.
  203. All right, show day.
  204. Which means we get to show the community what it
  205. is that we're working towards.
  206. Okay, now, this is a picture of me on a
  207. show day on.
  208. We are to be serious, because at that moment, we
  209. are focused on, you know, having the best performance.
  210. Okay, Our goal don't forget is to get to 100
  211. or as close to 100 as possible.
  212. Okay, So I hope you enjoy some of these pictures
  213. of me, and I'm gonna go ahead and let Miss

  215. our video.
