00:01 - 00:03
Hi, my name is Madison McCarry.
00:03 - 00:06
And I am going to be doing my debate topic
00:06 - 00:13
today on businesses and um their competitiveness and um the
00:13 - 00:17
role that psychology plays um when they are trying to
00:17 - 00:24
generate sales and um create a competitive advantage for them um
00:24 - 00:26
over other companies.
00:27 - 00:33
So there is much concern about how businesses go about
00:33 - 00:37
doing this and how they go about wanting
00:37 - 00:40
to get sales and using their marketing tactics.
00:40 - 00:45
And so I am going to kind of break down the
00:45 - 00:49
my thinking process um and where I stand on this issue.
00:50 - 00:55
So first things first, I'm going to kind of give you an overview and um
00:55 - 01:02
business is a very competitive environment and um
01:05 - 01:05
you know,
01:05 - 01:10
there's a there's so many businesses out in the world that have the same motives,
01:10 - 01:11
the same um
01:12 - 01:16
the same products, they have the same, you know, services.
01:16 - 01:19
And so all companies want to create
01:19 - 01:21
that competitive advantage.
01:21 - 01:26
Um and they are trying to do everything possible
01:26 - 01:32
to make themselves more successful than their competitors.
01:32 - 01:38
Um And so with this issue, there is kind of the question about whether
01:39 - 01:43
this mind manipulation is a good thing or whether it's a bad thing.
01:43 - 01:49
And so you can kind of think about it two ways. It kind of depends on where you stand.
01:49 - 01:54
But, you know, is it really mind manipulation? Is marketing truly,
01:54 - 01:57
you know, sinister and like mind manipulation?
01:57 - 02:03
Or is it just utilizing the knowledge about how the human brain works?
02:04 - 02:11
And so this is kind of where I stand on um marketing and it's
02:11 - 02:14
it's really just understanding how the brain
02:14 - 02:17
works and you're not necessarily manipulating people,
02:17 - 02:20
you know, to do bad things,
02:20 - 02:23
you're you're manipulating their natural brain functions and
02:23 - 02:26
their natural thoughts and their thought process.
02:26 - 02:32
Um And so that's kind of where the psychology role will come in, and so, you know,
02:32 - 02:35
everybody's influenced by so many things and
02:35 - 02:37
you know, your thoughts, the people around you,
02:37 - 02:42
what you've been conditioned conditioned to think and things like that,
02:42 - 02:46
all those sorts of things will influence the way that you think.
02:47 - 02:52
Um And so there are psychology um
02:53 - 02:57
principles called influence techniques um created by robert Sheldon E
02:57 - 03:01
and his um influence influence book in social psychology.
03:01 - 03:07
And um so things like whether you like that person, whether they do things for you,
03:07 - 03:10
um you know, peer pressure, things like that,
03:10 - 03:14
those are all influenced techniques um that
03:14 - 03:15
marketing
03:16 - 03:17
uses
03:17 - 03:19
to get people to
03:19 - 03:21
buy their products and use their services.
03:22 - 03:26
Um So that kind of comes to my last conclusion. Um
03:26 - 03:29
here are my overview that my manipulation should be
03:29 - 03:34
allowed because um business is a very competitive environment and
03:35 - 03:36
you know,
03:36 - 03:39
I don't think it's unreasonable for a company to
03:39 - 03:43
want to um generate more sales than someone else.
03:43 - 03:46
I mean that's how that's how business works, that's how business runs,
03:46 - 03:50
that's how um there are large companies, they're small companies,
03:50 - 03:52
that's how they're successful and unsuccessful.
03:52 - 03:59
Um So, you know, I think my manipulation or however you want to say it um
04:00 - 04:02
and marketing should be allowed because
04:02 - 04:06
it's just the manipulation and understanding
04:06 - 04:09
um the way that your your natural brain functions work.
