00:01 - 00:06
Hello and happy thanksgiving T. E. D. 7 44 week.
00:06 - 00:08
Number four carries us through the thanksgiving holidays.
00:08 - 00:14
So we are going to run this november 23rd through the 29th. Um
00:15 - 00:19
Knowing that your discussion will be due the 28th the assignment
00:21 - 00:26
and I'll get into more details from there if you know and you know
00:26 - 00:29
a couple of you have already reached out but if you know you're gonna be
00:29 - 00:33
traveling or whatnot or not within means of
00:33 - 00:37
internet or whatever whatever that means for you reach
00:37 - 00:41
out to me beforehand like early this week and
00:41 - 00:43
we can make other arrangements if need be.
00:43 - 00:50
Um I will not accept accept late assignments unless we have predetermined a plan.
00:50 - 00:53
Okay so if you need an extension you just need to let me
00:53 - 00:56
know prior to the due date and we can talk about it.
00:56 - 00:57
Okay
00:57 - 00:58
let's get through.
00:58 - 01:02
Um Well before I get to the recap I just wanna
01:02 - 01:06
spend a minute talking about what's to come this week.
01:06 - 01:11
This week gives us a little creative challenge but it also is going to be
01:11 - 01:15
kind of getting at the meat of lesson design and lesson planning in general.
01:15 - 01:18
And maybe a couple of new ways of doing that and
01:18 - 01:23
thinking about that too to give you more creative freedom perhaps.
01:23 - 01:24
Um
01:25 - 01:28
Now this week we're going to talk the addie model we're going to talk
01:28 - 01:30
understanding by design that process in the
01:30 - 01:33
community of inquiry model or framework.
01:33 - 01:34
However you wanna word that.
01:34 - 01:38
So there's three different models now you're gonna learn about all three
01:38 - 01:41
of those but you don't have to keep put them in isolation,
01:41 - 01:42
so to speak
01:43 - 01:46
if you like pieces and parts of certain ones,
01:46 - 01:52
that's your freedom to design your lessons with whatever model or models in mind.
01:52 - 01:55
So keep that in mind as you're learning about all of these.
01:55 - 02:00
Okay, a recap from week three, so it was really about learning outcomes.
02:00 - 02:03
Those taxonomy is smart objectives.
02:03 - 02:05
Remember smart specific, measurable,
02:05 - 02:10
achievable relevant time bound and writing those objectives to to have
02:10 - 02:14
all five of those pieces and then you took your needs analysis
02:14 - 02:20
from week two and you further developed it in including assessing student
02:20 - 02:25
progress and really using that needs assessment to guide your instruction.
02:25 - 02:26
Um
02:27 - 02:32
and then of course our overall goal, our focus is always student growth.
02:32 - 02:38
So that being said, let's get into a few little nitpicky things for this week.
02:38 - 02:43
Now I do wanna just keep you in the loop on my schedule,
02:43 - 02:49
starting on thanksgiving thursday november 24th through Tuesday november 29th,
02:49 - 02:56
I will be only available through email and even with that it'll be a little delayed,
02:56 - 03:00
I will be out of town and in an area where my cellphone
03:00 - 03:06
service and internet is going to be pretty poor um as you may know
03:06 - 03:11
just from my bio a little bit we are we're hunters and we do
03:11 - 03:15
an annual trip to South Dakota pheasant hunting every year at thanksgiving time.
03:16 - 03:21
Um I go with my husband and my dad and so I don't, I don't want to miss that.
03:21 - 03:23
So I am away for a little bit.
03:23 - 03:27
I will check my email in the mornings and I will check
03:27 - 03:31
my email in the afternoons or I should say the evenings,
03:31 - 03:34
so to speak and then I kind of triage them.
03:34 - 03:38
So if they need me now I will reply.
03:38 - 03:41
If it's something that doesn't need me right now,
03:41 - 03:44
you won't get a reply until november 30th.
03:44 - 03:47
Okay, again, super important to email me.
03:47 - 03:51
If you want an extension, I will tell you that on thanksgiving,
03:51 - 03:56
I probably won't check my email at all and possibly that friday after thanksgiving
03:56 - 04:02
because those are university holidays and I am off off off those days.
04:02 - 04:04
But again,
04:04 - 04:07
email me early this week if you think you want an extra day. Okay.
04:07 - 04:13
And I apologize for those delayed emails if you're trying to reach me. Um but
04:13 - 04:14
it is what it is.
04:14 - 04:20
Right, So I hope you all are able to find time to relax and do something fun for sure.
04:20 - 04:22
Okay, let's talk readings.
04:22 - 04:26
There are a couple of articles that are right
04:26 - 04:31
away in that module in that week for overview,
04:31 - 04:32
take time to read those.
04:32 - 04:35
There's quite a bit of reading and quite a bit of literature this week,
04:35 - 04:37
so be planned full of that.
04:37 - 04:37
But
04:38 - 04:42
in this book, the lesson planning with purpose, chapters five and six,
04:42 - 04:47
they're pretty short and we're still talking about those approaches or
04:47 - 04:53
um we talked behaviorist approach last week and and whatnot.
04:53 - 04:54
So in the constructivist approach.
04:54 - 04:58
Now it's the aesthetic approach which I really like. I appreciate that one.
04:58 - 05:02
And then chapter six is the ecological approach.
05:02 - 05:05
Now I come from environmental background,
05:05 - 05:10
environmental school background and so those two approaches really just
05:10 - 05:12
kind of called to me I guess so to speak.
05:12 - 05:15
So I appreciate that piece of that in planning.
05:15 - 05:19
Again, these are approaches, theories, take them or leave them,
05:19 - 05:23
but you're going to gain pieces that you like regardless.
05:23 - 05:26
I feel that way. Then in this book,
05:26 - 05:30
um chapter three which is models of instructional design.
05:30 - 05:34
This particular chapter is full of graphics
05:34 - 05:35
and charts.
05:35 - 05:40
I appreciated that because like I've said before this book is a little more heavy.
05:40 - 05:45
Um but this those helped me and as you get to your assignment,
05:45 - 05:49
some of those charts and things might be something that is
05:49 - 05:52
worth embedding depending on what way you go with that assignment.
05:52 - 05:52
So
05:53 - 05:54
keep that in mind.
05:54 - 05:55
Okay,
05:55 - 05:56
let's talk.
05:57 - 06:00
Um Well throughout that there's gonna,
06:00 - 06:06
this module this week module is separated into really these designs.
06:06 - 06:09
So you're gonna have a module on addie community
06:09 - 06:12
inquiry one in a learning activity and interaction one.
06:12 - 06:17
And in those are embedded videos, I would say, just at a quick math quick,
06:17 - 06:21
It's about 40 minutes of videos throughout the whole week four.
06:21 - 06:21
So again,
06:21 - 06:23
keep that in mind maybe as you're making
06:23 - 06:26
your Turkey dinner or standing over the stove,
06:26 - 06:27
whatever it might be.
06:27 - 06:29
Play those videos
06:30 - 06:33
and I love to have that mix of videos and
06:33 - 06:36
reading just to fit everyone's learning styles and learning needs.
06:36 - 06:37
But
06:37 - 06:38
addie,
06:39 - 06:44
if you've not heard of the addie model, the addie model stands for analyze design,
06:44 - 06:46
develop, implement, evaluate,
06:46 - 06:50
I like this one the reason I do like this one and
06:50 - 06:54
and again I like pieces of each of them but I like
06:54 - 07:00
there's a colorful graphic in this particular module and it's like red, yellow,
07:00 - 07:03
green, blue and darker blue and it goes through
07:03 - 07:07
each of these pieces and it really I'll be honest.
07:07 - 07:12
I printed that I had that printed a long time ago and my lesson planning
07:12 - 07:16
process probably five or six years ago and that was in my plan book.
07:16 - 07:22
Okay it just gives us really good reminders of what needs to happen.
07:22 - 07:24
I liked it, it's a great resource
07:25 - 07:26
take it or leave it
07:28 - 07:32
again. There's a couple of videos in their Grant Wiggins is one of them.
07:32 - 07:36
He's a big addie guy. Um so
07:37 - 07:40
let's go to the next one. Understanding by design, you've probably heard of this U.
07:40 - 07:46
B. D. Um pretty popular. We talked about it even in our undergrad classes.
07:46 - 07:50
So but there is um in that there's a template
07:50 - 07:54
that's embedded and I found that at one point and
07:54 - 07:57
I thought you know what this works pretty good because
07:57 - 08:00
it really kind of guides you through the process.
08:00 - 08:05
So if you're somebody who really likes the theory behind understanding by design
08:05 - 08:10
um maybe try to find a template or use the one I gave you because it really does,
08:10 - 08:12
I think walk you through that.
08:12 - 08:16
Um and it's it's embedded in there, you'll see there's a link,
08:16 - 08:19
there's also another graphic um
08:20 - 08:20
in there,
08:20 - 08:25
so which I liked and it has the educational experience in
08:25 - 08:29
the center of it and it really focuses on engagement,
08:29 - 08:34
which again I like that this particular understanding by design.
08:34 - 08:38
One thing that comes to mind when I think understanding by design is it
08:38 - 08:43
always starts with the goals in mind and then builds on student interest,
08:43 - 08:46
student needs and that's always at the forefront and
08:46 - 08:49
then scaffolding happens to go from student interest,
08:49 - 08:50
student needs,
08:50 - 08:57
scaffold it right to that goal in mind this in order for this to be successful,
08:57 - 08:59
you have to know your kiddos.
08:59 - 09:00
So
09:00 - 09:08
um I like it, I like pieces of it just like addy, I like pieces of it in that module to,
09:08 - 09:14
it also gets into um some pronouns and it's just that social peace,
09:14 - 09:16
that social presence as a teacher, you know?
09:16 - 09:19
And again community building and it might seem kind of
09:19 - 09:24
like off target when we talk understanding by design,
09:24 - 09:30
but because community is at the center of that annoying your kiddos um there's
09:30 - 09:34
there was good information I found on it, I should also plug the E. D. I.
09:34 - 09:36
Certificate three W. W.
09:36 - 09:42
S and staff do that along with students and it's one more notch
09:42 - 09:44
in your belt is what it is and I have found it.
09:44 - 09:48
I have not finished that certificate yet because quite a few classes
09:48 - 09:53
that are involved in it but everyone I've taken has been wonderful.
09:53 - 09:58
So there's some information in there on that just for future for future use. Okay
09:58 - 10:01
let's go to community of inquiry framework.
10:01 - 10:03
Again I like this one, it's active,
10:03 - 10:07
it's all about interactions and active learning.
10:07 - 10:11
Um Again I came from an E. E. I. C.
10:11 - 10:14
Background and so making an experience out
10:14 - 10:16
of everything we're doing and getting out
10:16 - 10:21
of our four walls was key but it is built on social presence which
10:21 - 10:27
U. B. D. Is built on that to um cognitive presence, teaming presence.
10:27 - 10:32
So really it's I look at it as very an inclusive way to plan.
10:32 - 10:35
It's motivating it's safe for your kiddos.
10:35 - 10:42
So again there's a lot of overlap between all of these and for me. I created
10:43 - 10:49
the way I create lesson plans really is a mix of these three models, so to speak.
10:49 - 10:53
So that's where you come in and what are you already doing and maybe you are like you B.
10:53 - 10:57
D. All the way fine, that's totally fine.
10:57 - 11:00
But maybe you've picked up a couple of pieces here there that
11:00 - 11:03
you want to add in so just keep that in mind too.
11:03 - 11:07
Okay next is learning activities and interactions.
11:07 - 11:08
We know that's super important.
11:08 - 11:13
We know that the more activities we have and the more interactions we have,
11:13 - 11:17
the more deeper the learning is and building that trust in our classrooms.
11:17 - 11:22
I think of active learning is place based I think of it as making something real.
11:22 - 11:29
Um applying it to our natural world, making things and experience interactions.
11:29 - 11:33
That's think of interactions between you and your students,
11:33 - 11:38
your students and you students to students you and you're teaching staff and
11:38 - 11:40
everyone to the community.
11:40 - 11:44
Really getting that community involved in really building
11:44 - 11:48
interactions and partnerships scaffolding or building on it.
11:48 - 11:50
We're activating prior knowledge and building on it.
11:50 - 11:54
That stepping stone then giving feedback I think
11:54 - 11:56
is critical feedback is huge for me.
11:56 - 11:59
If you're making them do something make sure you give them feedback
11:59 - 12:04
and then being reflective should be part of our planning process.
12:04 - 12:06
Okay I'm gonna kind of rush through now discussion
12:07 - 12:09
this one needs to be super meaningful.
12:09 - 12:13
This is one that you should be able to walk away from after you read through
12:13 - 12:19
made comments and whatnot and you will be able to add things to your toolbox.
12:19 - 12:22
So you need to come up with one strategy of instruction that
12:22 - 12:27
is needed for higher level student learning think bloom's share about it.
12:27 - 12:30
Why is it higher level, very similar to last week.
12:30 - 12:34
Be super specific here on your own experience
12:34 - 12:37
with those higher level targets in one of your
12:37 - 12:41
instructional strategies that you use to get there again
12:41 - 12:44
due monday at nine a.m. The assignment itself.
12:44 - 12:49
You're gonna you're going to be an expert now on addy you B. D.
12:49 - 12:53
Community of inquiry model. So now you're going to create a written guide.
12:53 - 12:55
Not a paper. Okay.
12:55 - 12:58
Could be if you wanted it to but make it a guide
12:58 - 13:03
to support using these processes when creating and developing your lesson plans.
13:03 - 13:06
So if you were to take this you're making a guide to give to other
13:06 - 13:10
teachers and be like hey and to yourself hey this is what I would do.
13:10 - 13:13
These are what I need to think about um
13:13 - 13:17
create that guide that you that you would like to
13:17 - 13:21
receive as a professional development piece in your school.
13:21 - 13:26
But again be creative. You can use pictures, you can use graphics templates.
13:26 - 13:28
Make it make sense to you and your colleagues.
13:28 - 13:31
That's why I want you to get away from that written paper.
13:31 - 13:37
So um in that creative piece perhaps you want to make
13:37 - 13:39
it a word document and throw in all these graphics.
13:39 - 13:41
Perhaps it's going to be a pdf.
13:41 - 13:45
Perhaps you're going to do a website, maybe you're going to make an e book,
13:45 - 13:48
you be creative with it and make it make sense and make it
13:48 - 13:51
make it something that you would want.
13:51 - 13:56
Okay so there's a few pieces to this you of course need to describe at the beginning,
13:56 - 14:00
describe the theoretical foundations of instructional design.
14:00 - 14:03
Go through and talk about addie
14:03 - 14:07
led in the Community of Inquiry framework. Talk about each of those
14:07 - 14:10
maybe pros and cons maybe that overlap.
14:10 - 14:13
Then you're going to outline all of those components and processes.
14:13 - 14:15
When it comes to effective instructional design,
14:15 - 14:21
you're gonna illustrate the steps okay of good instruction engagement, thinking,
14:21 - 14:24
understanding creativity, memory application.
14:24 - 14:27
How does that'll tie into our creation of our
14:27 - 14:31
lesson plan and then have some teaching strategies.
14:31 - 14:34
Have a collection of teaching strategies in there that really
14:34 - 14:37
show that you are getting at those higher levels.
14:37 - 14:40
So make this fun. Make it worthwhile.
14:40 - 14:44
Of course it's going to be research based but again,
14:45 - 14:48
make it useful for you and your staff.
14:48 - 14:49
Okay?
14:49 - 14:50
Do Tuesday at nine and a. M.
14:50 - 14:53
Remember if you need me email me early in the week,
14:53 - 14:55
especially if you need that extension and if not
14:55 - 14:58
enjoy your thanksgiving and we will be in touch.
