00:02 - 00:02
Hi everyone,
00:02 - 00:04
my name is Daniel Williams and I'll be talking
00:04 - 00:07
to you about students in the digital age.
00:08 - 00:12
So I interviewed three teachers from the early childhood department
00:12 - 00:14
um which will be pre k through third grade.
00:14 - 00:19
I interviewed a preschool teacher, a second grade teacher and a third grade teacher
00:21 - 00:23
asked them a series of questions I asked them.
00:23 - 00:26
How did they integrate technology into their instruction?
00:26 - 00:29
They all said that they use ipads and they used them
00:29 - 00:33
for personalized instruction along with the program called I Ready,
00:33 - 00:36
which I only found to be used in the private schools
00:36 - 00:38
computers or chromebooks.
00:38 - 00:44
They use I Ready educational websites such as Star Fall abc and PBS Kids.
00:45 - 00:49
I excel in mobile max for reading and Math and learning A to Z for reading.
00:49 - 00:52
They all use Promethean boards or smart boards for
00:52 - 00:55
digital text for students to see their work um
00:55 - 00:57
so that they can do work visually together in
00:57 - 00:59
the class and go over everything as a group,
01:01 - 01:02
the tech in the class.
01:02 - 01:05
What apps are used already is used for Math and
01:05 - 01:08
reading A BcF for both literacy and math and preschool.
01:08 - 01:13
I excel in mobile max for reading and Math and learning A to Z
01:13 - 01:14
for reading
01:14 - 01:16
appropriate use of technology.
01:17 - 01:20
Digital citizenship is a lesson during computer classes.
01:20 - 01:24
Students are also reminded with visual reminders for
01:24 - 01:27
internet practices for younger students on ipads.
01:27 - 01:30
They are also reminded to stay on educational
01:30 - 01:32
apps and this was done across the board.
01:32 - 01:34
Um, freedom of technology in the classroom,
01:34 - 01:38
students are allowed to use specific websites on Fridays.
01:38 - 01:41
Once they have finished assignments and given some freedom,
01:41 - 01:42
younger students,
01:43 - 01:44
they are given a set amount of time on
01:44 - 01:48
ipads and allowed to play on any educational game
01:48 - 01:49
programmed into the ipad
01:50 - 01:51
devices
01:52 - 01:52
at school,
01:52 - 01:56
students share ipads and computers and students who don't
01:56 - 01:59
have devices at home are allowed to borrow school devices
01:59 - 02:01
for assignments. Only
02:03 - 02:07
students and parents responds to use of technology.
02:07 - 02:09
So teachers said that students enjoy the use of
02:09 - 02:12
computers and ipads as well as the visual aids,
02:12 - 02:14
music and interactive learning.
02:14 - 02:18
The parents enjoyed being able to see the student's progress on things
02:18 - 02:21
such as I ready and being able to have personalized students,
02:21 - 02:24
personalized assignments for their students needs
02:25 - 02:27
communication with technology,
02:27 - 02:31
email and google classroom are the main sources of communication.
02:31 - 02:33
The remind app is also used.
02:33 - 02:36
Google classroom is also used to post homework assignments.
02:38 - 02:40
So teachers and technology overview.
02:40 - 02:44
So there's a balance technology is used daily in all classes.
02:44 - 02:49
Students spend 30 minutes a day using computers or iPads unless it's free time.
02:49 - 02:50
It's used for testing.
02:50 - 02:54
Teachers said that they find testing using technology very useful.
02:54 - 02:57
It helps save time on grading and grouping students
02:57 - 02:59
and it also helps with inclusion.
02:59 - 03:04
So students with high ups are provided with audio for testing questions.
03:04 - 03:08
They are also read aloud when testing. They are also used to communicate.
03:09 - 03:12
Fund usage for the technology within the classroom.
03:12 - 03:13
You're able to go on digital field trips.
03:13 - 03:17
So students love to explore new places and are able to do so online.
03:19 - 03:19
Yeah.
03:20 - 03:23
I also did a survey of students from preschool to third grade.
03:23 - 03:26
Um I asked the students questions
03:26 - 03:30
based on development literacy, family background, student interests,
03:30 - 03:34
access to the use of technology, extracurricular activities,
03:34 - 03:36
students with special needs if they have any,
03:38 - 03:41
getting to know you was the name of the survey,
03:44 - 03:45
getting to know you.
03:45 - 03:46
So the developmental questions were,
03:46 - 03:50
have you developed a clear hand preference for literacy?
03:50 - 03:53
How often do you read outside of school for family background?
03:53 - 03:56
I wanted to know who the students live with and who their
03:56 - 04:00
support system was and I wanted to know for student entrance,
04:00 - 04:03
Do you have any skills or talents that they would be willing to share for
04:03 - 04:06
either all about me project or for a talent show.
04:06 - 04:09
And I also wanted to know if students will have access to
04:09 - 04:12
technology and how much the time they spent using this technology,
04:12 - 04:16
whether it been ipads, phones, video games, or just watching tv
04:17 - 04:19
extracurricular extracurricular activities.
04:19 - 04:23
I wanted to know if the students were a part of anything outside of school,
04:23 - 04:26
whether it be sports teams or after school programs.
04:26 - 04:29
And then I wanted to find out if any of our students had any special needs.
04:31 - 04:35
So I found that I asked them if they found it difficult following instructions,
04:35 - 04:37
whether it be at home or at school.
04:38 - 04:40
These are my results from my students survey.
04:40 - 04:42
So have you developed a clear hand preference?
04:42 - 04:47
My students all developed a clear hand preference. Usually it was the right hand.
04:47 - 04:50
In one case one student was able to use both hands equally.
04:50 - 04:54
And I wanted to know who my students live with. So I asked them, who do you live with?
04:54 - 04:56
Most of my students live with both mom and
04:56 - 04:59
dad and one student lives with a family member.
05:00 - 05:04
Do you have any skills or talents that you can share with the class during a show
05:04 - 05:08
And tell most of my students said that they had a special talent that was not listed.
05:08 - 05:12
Um I had one student that said they can sing and one that was involved in dance.
05:16 - 05:21
How about about how much time do you spend using technology outside of school?
05:21 - 05:24
Ipads, phones, video games or watching tv.
05:24 - 05:30
I found that most of my students spent 123 hours using technology outside of school
05:31 - 05:36
and I asked them if they were a part of any sports teams after school, they all said yes
05:37 - 05:38
and I wanted to know,
05:38 - 05:41
did they find it difficult following instruction or failed
05:41 - 05:44
to finish school work or chores or other duties?
05:44 - 05:44
Um
05:45 - 05:48
Pretty much all of my students said that they were unlikely
05:49 - 05:52
that they were unlikely to complete tasks very
05:52 - 05:54
unlikely and then one was likely to complete
05:54 - 05:55
found it difficult.
05:58 - 06:00
So getting to know you, like I said earlier,
06:00 - 06:04
this survey was taken by early childhood students from pre K to third grade.
06:05 - 06:10
Um one parent took the test took the survey, and four students took the survey.
06:10 - 06:14
Students had a wide range of activities they did outside of school.
06:14 - 06:19
Students play sports, track and field, golf, basketball and baseball,
06:19 - 06:21
science club, math clubs and taekwondo.
06:24 - 06:28
So a summary of everything that I've done my research on.
06:28 - 06:29
So overall, through my research,
06:29 - 06:33
I found that teachers use technology on a daily basis.
06:33 - 06:36
The days of chalkboards and whiteboards are no more.
06:36 - 06:40
Teachers use interactive smart boards to teach lessons daily.
06:40 - 06:43
They communicate with families through email and other apps.
06:43 - 06:49
Students use learning apps and computers a few times a day within the classroom.
06:49 - 06:50
The early childhood students,
06:50 - 06:54
I survey seem to spend a lot of time using technology outside of school,
06:54 - 06:58
but the students all seem to be involved in after school activities.
07:01 - 07:04
Thank you so much. My name is Daniel Williams, Have a great day.
