00:02 - 00:07
my name is Emery Main and this is my journey through the bio psychosocial model.
00:08 - 00:10
Let me start with the beginning, My beginning
00:12 - 00:13
is softball.
00:13 - 00:17
This is something I found that I could apply the bio
00:17 - 00:22
psychosocial model to and being an athlete and playing softball.
00:23 - 00:26
I would consider softball being my first love.
00:26 - 00:30
I truly fell in love with the sport when I was 10 years old,
00:30 - 00:33
it was something I could be passionate about and I absolutely
00:33 - 00:37
fell in love with the sport and everything about it.
00:37 - 00:37
And
00:38 - 00:43
this is a picture of me, my sister and my grandfather. When I first started playing
00:45 - 00:49
Training, I practice 20-25 hours a week
00:50 - 00:52
and I did a lot of extra work on my own
00:52 - 00:55
just so I could become better and become a better player.
00:55 - 00:59
I practiced during the week in most weekends.
00:59 - 01:01
I never really had a lot of time off
01:01 - 01:04
because I was always practicing or I always had games
01:05 - 01:09
and I played year round. So I never took like a few weeks or a few months off.
01:09 - 01:13
I was always constantly playing and practicing and
01:14 - 01:14
I spent
01:14 - 01:18
a majority of my youth playing softball and practicing.
01:21 - 01:22
My main goal
01:23 - 01:26
was to have a free education. Once I learned
01:27 - 01:29
That I could have a free education,
01:29 - 01:34
I didn't realize that until I was about 1314 that if I was good enough
01:35 - 01:40
and I applied myself that I could play softball in
01:40 - 01:44
college and receive a scholarship and have a free education
01:44 - 01:47
and I did achieve that I got to live that
01:47 - 01:51
dream out for two years and I received my associates degree
01:53 - 01:57
playing softball and I had a free education.
01:59 - 02:03
So one of the factors of the bio psychosocial model is
02:03 - 02:05
the psychological factor
02:05 - 02:09
softball helped me improve my concentration.
02:09 - 02:13
I had to concentrate on things in front of me and
02:13 - 02:19
playing softball. I was able to really focus on things at hand and
02:19 - 02:21
learn how to
02:21 - 02:25
concentrate on things that are in front of me and things that I can control.
02:26 - 02:27
I
02:27 - 02:30
I learned a lot about concentration and really
02:30 - 02:33
settling down my thoughts and my emotions
02:33 - 02:35
and really concentrating on things at hand.
02:36 - 02:40
Another thing is it helped me manage stress in my life. Um
02:41 - 02:43
whenever I was in middle school and high school,
02:44 - 02:47
which is stressful enough times as it is,
02:47 - 02:50
softball was always there for me psychologically,
02:50 - 02:53
it was something I could go to and I could never
02:54 - 02:59
settle down my emotions and my thoughts and it was always there to help me
03:00 - 03:02
get through those times and really
03:02 - 03:07
escape from reality for a little bit. And it also helped with my parents divorce
03:08 - 03:09
when I was younger.
03:10 - 03:13
It those are two very tough times in our lives,
03:13 - 03:16
middle school and high school and a parent divorce.
03:16 - 03:21
But softball was always there for me in a way because it was something I could go to
03:21 - 03:23
whenever I was sad or upset and it helped
03:23 - 03:27
me manage dress because I was exercising and I was
03:28 - 03:30
being out with my friends and I was just
03:30 - 03:34
escaping from all of the stress in my life in a way.
03:34 - 03:35
And I also,
03:36 - 03:41
I had a high self esteem because I valued myself when I did well whenever,
03:41 - 03:45
whenever I got a hit or whenever I pitched really good.
03:45 - 03:49
I it helped my self esteem and it helped me set goals
03:50 - 03:51
for my life and help me
03:52 - 03:54
become a better person and
03:55 - 03:56
grow.
03:56 - 03:59
And my self esteem has always been good because of
03:59 - 04:03
softball because I always valued what I did in softball.
04:04 - 04:10
And one of the biggest things I think for me was learning to control my emotions
04:10 - 04:12
in softball when you're upset or when you're
04:12 - 04:16
sad or whenever you're feeling any negative emotions,
04:16 - 04:18
you have to brush them off
04:18 - 04:20
and soft dog
04:20 - 04:23
being in that time in my life, I was very
04:24 - 04:28
good at learning to control my emotions and whenever I was upset
04:29 - 04:34
or mad, I would be able to communicate my emotions instead of showing my emotions.
04:36 - 04:39
And some evidence of this is from active Norfolk.
04:40 - 04:42
The mental benefits of sport
04:43 - 04:47
participating in this kind of activity 3-5 times a week for
04:47 - 04:48
at least 30 minutes
04:49 - 04:53
can provide mental health benefits which will last as you age
04:54 - 05:00
in regular physical activity helps keep your key mental skills sharp as you age.
05:00 - 05:04
This includes sharp thinking, learning and using good judgment.
05:06 - 05:06
Yeah.
05:06 - 05:11
Going back to the other factors of the bio psychosocial model
05:12 - 05:12
social,
05:13 - 05:15
So for me social,
05:15 - 05:19
the social factor was very big when I played softball,
05:19 - 05:25
I was around girls my age and it created a community, not just with the girls,
05:25 - 05:26
but with the families of the
05:27 - 05:28
girls I played with.
05:28 - 05:31
And it was such a community that I still am a
05:31 - 05:35
part of because I grew such strong ties to everyone I met
05:36 - 05:41
and it created a sense of belonging to something bigger than myself
05:41 - 05:45
and it was just such a great community and great group of girls.
05:45 - 05:47
I was always around and it was just
05:48 - 05:54
there, it made me feel good about where I was and I felt like I belonged there. And
05:54 - 05:56
another thing that
05:57 - 06:02
softball created for me with stronger ties for my family because my family,
06:02 - 06:04
we're providing
06:05 - 06:07
um money too,
06:08 - 06:11
my tournaments and my sports equipment
06:11 - 06:14
and they provided their time to take me to my tournaments
06:15 - 06:17
and they provided everything for me to have a good
06:18 - 06:21
softball career and I'm just very thankful and close to
06:21 - 06:24
my family because of everything that they've done for me.
06:25 - 06:27
And another thing is I aimed
06:28 - 06:30
for good grades so I could
06:31 - 06:35
go to college and play softball and I always wanted to
06:35 - 06:39
do well in school because the community I was in is
06:40 - 06:42
grades come first, softball comes second
06:43 - 06:48
and I always valued that and I always put my grades above softball.
06:49 - 06:51
Some evidence behind that is from the social
06:51 - 06:54
and academic benefits of team sports article,
06:55 - 06:58
a university of Kansas Kansas study,
06:58 - 07:01
looking at the performance of students in grades 9 to 12
07:01 - 07:06
showed that more than 97% of student athletes graduated high school,
07:06 - 07:10
10% higher than those students who had never participated in sports.
07:11 - 07:14
That diverse pairing of personalities and scenarios
07:14 - 07:17
will help you your athlete become adaptable,
07:17 - 07:18
persistent and patient
07:18 - 07:23
team sports also teach a sense of group and individual responsibility.
07:25 - 07:29
And another factor of the bio psychosocial model would be the biological.
07:29 - 07:32
This one for me is a very big one in
07:32 - 07:36
my life and it has affected my psychological and my social
07:38 - 07:40
factors of my life. Um,
07:40 - 07:45
so I was always able to maintain a healthy body weight because
07:46 - 07:49
I was always active. I was always running. I was always
07:49 - 07:52
doing and moving around
07:52 - 07:56
and when you're moving so much you have to learn a healthy diet in which I did.
07:56 - 07:59
I learned a healthy diet and I learned how
08:00 - 08:00
foods
08:01 - 08:05
affect your ability to play and affect your body.
08:06 - 08:09
And I was able to increase my heart capacity
08:09 - 08:13
and have a healthy heart in my
08:13 - 08:14
blood,
08:17 - 08:18
my blood pressure,
08:19 - 08:22
and I was able to have good heart health at such
08:22 - 08:26
a young age because I was so active and playing softball,
08:26 - 08:29
I was much more prone to recover from illness and injury
08:29 - 08:33
because of the way my body was designed and how I created
08:34 - 08:35
a better
08:37 - 08:39
metabolism and better
08:40 - 08:42
habits from playing softball,
08:43 - 08:45
a big injury I had.
08:45 - 08:50
That was my career ending injury for softball was in my second year of college,
08:50 - 08:54
I had an accident that resulted in two herniated disc in my back
08:55 - 08:57
and I had two choices, I could either have surgery
08:58 - 08:59
or I could keep playing
09:00 - 09:02
or I could quit softball
09:05 - 09:10
and the treatments I did. So I did decide to quit softball after two years of playing.
09:11 - 09:14
I did this to prevent any further damage.
09:15 - 09:18
And so some treatments I did were physical therapy.
09:18 - 09:22
Cupping stem and I went to the chiropractor a lot.
09:22 - 09:27
I quit softball because I'm only 21 years old and if I would have kept playing,
09:27 - 09:30
I could have damaged more nerves and more
09:31 - 09:34
more damage in my back and I could have
09:34 - 09:36
down the road in my life, I could
09:37 - 09:42
end up paralyzed or it could end up having really bad back problems.
09:43 - 09:44
Some evidence from
09:45 - 09:47
this is people who are active in sports
09:48 - 09:52
have in general better health than those who do not participate in
09:52 - 09:54
sports because they are physically and
09:54 - 09:56
mentally prepared for the challenges of sports
09:57 - 10:01
abilities that in many cases can be transferred to other parts of their life.
10:05 - 10:05
Come here
10:06 - 10:08
present where I am now in my life.
10:08 - 10:12
So softball ended for me about a year ago, but where I am now
10:13 - 10:15
my body um biologically,
10:15 - 10:18
I know it is important to have regular checkups
10:18 - 10:21
with your doctor to prevent illness and injury.
10:21 - 10:23
And if there is a problem that treatment
10:23 - 10:26
has begun before irreversible damage is caused.
10:27 - 10:29
For example, when I entered my back,
10:29 - 10:33
I immediately went to the doctor multiple times to complete treatments such
10:33 - 10:37
as physical therapy and stem even after months after the injury.
10:37 - 10:38
So I couldn't.
10:38 - 10:44
So I now continue regular checkups to make sure no damage is continuing to happen.
10:44 - 10:49
And I see my chiropractor once a month to adjust my spelling
10:51 - 10:52
my mind.
10:52 - 10:53
So psychological,
10:53 - 10:55
I know it is important to keep your
10:55 - 10:58
mind healthy because it does affect your physical body
10:59 - 11:03
where I am now in my life. I go to therapy once a week to talk with a therapist.
11:03 - 11:06
I practice mindfulness to help ease anxiety and stress
11:06 - 11:09
in my life since I don't have softball as an
11:10 - 11:11
as an outlet anymore.
11:11 - 11:17
So I have to find alternative ways of easing anxiety and stress in my life,
11:18 - 11:19
my surroundings.
11:20 - 11:22
So socially, I know it is important.
11:22 - 11:25
We surround ourselves, who we surround ourselves with
11:25 - 11:29
by surrounding ourselves with positive influences.
11:29 - 11:30
We become motivated and happier.
11:31 - 11:35
I choose to put myself out there to continue to grow and meet new people.
11:35 - 11:35
However,
11:35 - 11:39
I keep my family and friends close because they are upbeat and they pushed
11:39 - 11:43
me to be better and my family and my friends are my rock and they
11:44 - 11:46
will always be there for me.
11:48 - 11:50
My thoughts about this project.
11:51 - 11:52
It's hard
11:52 - 11:55
to look at our own life through different factors,
11:55 - 11:57
especially the bio psychosocial model.
11:58 - 12:03
But this project has truly showed me how things in my life are all connected
12:04 - 12:08
with our minds, our body and our social life,
12:08 - 12:10
and how everything that we do and everything
12:11 - 12:13
that we apply in our life can all
12:14 - 12:19
be connected. And I really did enjoy this project because I had to sit
12:19 - 12:19
in
12:20 - 12:24
annualized my life and how everything is affected in my life and how
12:25 - 12:30
it's not just one thing that's affected, but it's multiple things that are affected
12:32 - 12:32
and
12:32 - 12:36
last but not least, the references I used for
12:37 - 12:38
my project,
12:40 - 12:45
and that is it. And that was my journey through the bio psychosocial model.
