00:01 - 00:04
I'm Ronnie Williams and the community that I chose to
00:05 - 00:07
study was Mount Peale earlier indiana.
00:08 - 00:11
Um I chose this community because I'm not familiar with
00:12 - 00:12
rural communities.
00:13 - 00:17
So I just research Mountain Earlier I just researched rural
00:17 - 00:24
communities in indiana um on google and Mount Clear was
00:24 - 00:27
one of the communities and I just I chose that
00:27 - 00:32
community. Um mount clear is located in Boone County and
00:33 - 00:36
it has, its population size is roughly around 1700 people.
00:39 - 00:45
Yeah one of the major events organizations that I found
00:46 - 00:49
in this town was the Mountain Earlier jamboree.
00:50 - 00:53
Um I found this town on their facebook community group
00:54 - 00:55
that was called Mountain Earlier Jamboree.
00:56 - 01:00
I've noticed that um that a lot of this communication
01:01 - 01:06
is very interactive online through social media specifically like I've
01:06 - 01:09
said facebook, I've saw that there's a lot of diversity
01:10 - 01:13
in this community in terms of age.
01:13 - 01:16
So there's a lot of teenagers and young people and
01:17 - 01:21
adults as well who interact um on this facebook group
01:22 - 01:27
um the Montpellier Gymboree is essentially a huge party and
01:27 - 01:32
Mount P earlier indiana they have things like pork eating,
01:32 - 01:35
context contests concerts.
01:36 - 01:41
Originally, well recently they had a concert group named saliva
01:42 - 01:45
who I'm not too, I'm not familiar with it all
01:45 - 01:47
but a lot of people seemed really excited that they
01:47 - 01:48
were coming through.
01:50 - 01:53
They were in attendance during this jamboree as well.
01:53 - 01:56
Um they also have amusement amusement park rides.
01:57 - 01:59
So like a ferris wheel as well during this community
02:00 - 02:03
group. Um and as I previously mentioned about this group.
02:04 - 02:07
There are, there is diversity in terms of age and
02:07 - 02:10
how everyone interacts with each other and I just thought
02:10 - 02:12
that this was a strength for this community because it
02:12 - 02:15
just, it just brings out the entire town no matter
02:16 - 02:19
what age you are in the community, the entire town
02:20 - 02:24
is really Fascinated and really interested in this event that
02:24 - 02:25
they host yearly.
02:26 - 02:30
It was actually their 75th annual um event that they
02:31 - 02:32
had further mount clear jamboree.
02:34 - 02:36
I also saw with this that there were a lot
02:37 - 02:39
of, there are a lot of residents or there were
02:40 - 02:42
a lot of people who are born in Montpellier but
02:42 - 02:43
moved to specifically Indianapolis.
02:44 - 02:46
I saw a lot of people saying, hey I'm traveling
02:47 - 02:50
from Indianapolis where rose should I take what?
02:50 - 02:54
Um streets are being blocked off and just asking questions
02:55 - 02:56
about the event and there are a lot of people
02:57 - 03:00
that are really helpful and just really excited for them
03:00 - 03:03
to just come back and enjoy this time and just
03:03 - 03:05
to be with family, friends and I thought that was
03:05 - 03:08
very interesting because I felt like that related to a
03:09 - 03:10
lot of the rural brain drain that we had talked
03:10 - 03:14
about in class um and just seeing that seeing the
03:15 - 03:19
large amount of people who have moved away um and
03:19 - 03:21
who come back just for events.
03:21 - 03:23
That was very interesting to see.
03:26 - 03:34
Yeah mm The second I would say community, the second
03:34 - 03:40
event or organization that I've noticed with mountain earlier was
03:40 - 03:44
the community, it was another community group on facebook and
03:44 - 03:46
it was just titled Mount chillier community group.
03:47 - 03:50
Um, and there, and with this community group, there's a
03:50 - 03:50
lot of mix.
03:51 - 03:53
Um, a lot of different ages in this group as
03:54 - 03:57
well. And I saw that with this community group, it
03:57 - 03:58
had 1000 members.
03:59 - 04:01
Um, and I thought that was pretty interesting given that
04:01 - 04:05
the town, the population is roughly 1700 people.
04:06 - 04:09
Um, but this town had 1000 active members on there
04:09 - 04:13
and it was, it's a community group just for miscellaneous
04:13 - 04:15
things that's happening within the community.
04:15 - 04:18
I saw that a lot of the interactions that I've
04:18 - 04:22
seen was just people saying, hey, have you seen is
04:23 - 04:26
your water bill high this month and a lot of
04:26 - 04:28
people winter, I can say yes, unusually high.
04:28 - 04:32
Some people offer suggestions as to why a tie or
04:32 - 04:34
what they need to do to combat that.
04:35 - 04:36
And I thought it was really interesting that this community
04:37 - 04:41
group really comes together and just just helps each other
04:42 - 04:44
out. Um, with their bills.
04:45 - 04:47
I've seen that even if they had animals that were
04:48 - 04:50
lost, the community goes out and search for these animals
04:51 - 04:52
and we'll post like, hey, I saw this person on
04:53 - 04:55
Washington street or this is where I last saw this
04:55 - 04:58
dog and I thought it was very interesting that this
04:59 - 05:01
was just a group for everybody to come together and
05:01 - 05:03
say, hey, do you notice what's going on in the
05:03 - 05:04
community or do you not.
05:05 - 05:09
Um, and I've also found that in this community group,
05:09 - 05:12
I kept saying one in particular, this older woman who
05:12 - 05:16
was just talking about yard sales um, which leads me
05:16 - 05:21
to my next event that I thought was, that seems
05:21 - 05:23
to be a major event in mountain earlier.
05:23 - 05:34
Um, and it was yard sales so well as I've
05:34 - 05:37
stated before, there was just this older woman who talked
05:37 - 05:39
about yard sales a lot.
05:39 - 05:41
Um, in these community groups.
05:41 - 05:43
I even found her in the jamboree as well.
05:44 - 05:47
And so I looked up Mount Hillyer yard sales on
05:47 - 05:52
facebook to see like what was, why is it so
05:52 - 05:54
important that these people are having these yard sales because
05:54 - 05:57
a lot of people would interact with her um, regarding
05:57 - 05:59
the yard sales that ended up finding out that she
05:59 - 06:01
has a lot of presence in this community.
06:02 - 06:06
Um, and she's an older woman and she's very helpful
06:07 - 06:10
and I saw that they mount clear had a facebook
06:10 - 06:12
group specifically for yard sales.
06:13 - 06:16
Um, and it had 1000 active members on there.
06:16 - 06:19
And there was a lot of people just saying, hey,
06:19 - 06:20
I'm having this yard sale this day.
06:21 - 06:23
I'm selling these things, showing pictures of the things that
06:23 - 06:24
they were selling.
06:25 - 06:29
And I saw even in the pictures that this seems
06:29 - 06:31
to be a community gathering throughout the week.
06:32 - 06:34
So it seems like a trip that you just take
06:34 - 06:35
your family to go to.
06:35 - 06:37
Like, hey, let's go to this person is happening, there
06:37 - 06:40
are still let's go to this person, let's go to
06:40 - 06:41
this next person's house.
06:41 - 06:45
Um and I saw that it it seems like it's
06:45 - 06:50
just, it brings the community together just throughout the week.
06:51 - 06:53
Um a lot of people would just go to people
06:53 - 06:58
different houses and just purchase or even look at the
06:58 - 07:00
things that they have to sell and in particular that
07:00 - 07:03
one woman, she is very helpful in the community and
07:03 - 07:07
that um she uses her presence to allow others to
07:07 - 07:09
come to her home and sell different items as well
07:10 - 07:10
if they need to.
07:11 - 07:12
So I thought that was really interesting in the strength
07:13 - 07:17
of this community that just shows how supportive everyone is
07:17 - 07:19
of each other and how helpful this community is.
07:21 - 07:22
Yes. Yeah.
07:23 - 07:26
Yeah. Mhm.
07:27 - 07:33
The next overall organization that I saw was on another
07:33 - 07:38
facebook community group um titled Old Mount earlier indiana.
07:40 - 07:42
And I thought it was interesting because I started to
07:42 - 07:46
see a lot of um facts and this wasn't the
07:46 - 07:49
only community group but it was the largest community group
07:49 - 07:53
that had 1000 members on it and it was just
07:53 - 07:57
a community group that talked about old facts of Mount
07:57 - 08:02
chillier indiana and I've learned from this community group.
08:03 - 08:06
I personally learned about the 1924 bombing of the Columbia
08:07 - 08:09
Hotel. I learned that this is a huge historical event,
08:10 - 08:14
a huge um yeah, huge historical event that happened in
08:14 - 08:19
Montpellier um that a lot of the older generation talk
08:19 - 08:20
about in this community.
08:21 - 08:22
That was the one thing that I think that there
08:22 - 08:25
was a lot of older people in these communities that
08:25 - 08:29
we're talking about different conspiracy theories and one was being
08:29 - 08:33
that there were actually a few members, a few workers
08:34 - 08:38
there who contributed to this bombing, because they found it
08:38 - 08:40
interesting that they all went on strike.
08:41 - 08:43
A couple of the members went on strike a couple
08:44 - 08:46
of days before the bombing, so that's been a lot
08:46 - 08:47
of talking within that community.
08:48 - 08:51
Um but I did notice that it is majority the
08:51 - 08:53
older people in this community and they don't seem to
08:54 - 08:59
um accepting of the younger generations opinions about what actually
08:59 - 09:03
happened um with that in different conspiracy theories.
09:08 - 09:09
Mhm. Mhm.
09:11 - 09:13
And then the last major event that I've researched with
09:13 - 09:18
the Montpellier Motor speedway um this is a, this is
09:18 - 09:22
a an event that happens from May to october and
09:23 - 09:24
it is weekly.
09:25 - 09:28
Um and they have saturday night racing's and I saw
09:28 - 09:31
that this, out of all the things that I've mentioned
09:31 - 09:37
is the hugest, it's the largest um community event in
09:37 - 09:37
Mount pearl Ear.
09:38 - 09:41
This I saw, I did research on the Mount Clear
09:42 - 09:46
Motor speedway community group on facebook and also amount Clear
09:46 - 09:50
speedway dot com, I saw that this facebook group has
09:50 - 09:57
over 5000 subscribers and a lot more interaction on this
09:57 - 09:57
Facebook group.
09:58 - 10:01
There were a lot of people who were just excited
10:02 - 10:04
to come, a lot of people from out of town
10:04 - 10:08
come um and I also saw that it was just
10:08 - 10:11
a huge gathering on the weekends like after work people
10:11 - 10:15
will go here and just hang out and just commute
10:16 - 10:17
and just have a great time.
10:17 - 10:19
I saw that a lot of people like to camp
10:19 - 10:20
out at this place.
10:20 - 10:24
So this event allows people to bring their trailer homes
10:24 - 10:26
there and just sit and camp out for the weekend
10:27 - 10:30
just so they can have an enjoyable weekend with family
10:30 - 10:30
and friends.
10:31 - 10:34
Um and it's a very diverse age group.
10:34 - 10:38
I saw I've seen Children there, I am along with
10:39 - 10:42
their family and friends so it seems like there's a
10:42 - 10:46
huge sense of community and pride with the Mount Polley
10:46 - 10:50
Air motor speedway because they're not only um Mhm.
10:51 - 10:53
It doesn't only just hope people from Mount clear but
10:53 - 10:56
also in Boone County in general, a lot of people
10:56 - 10:59
come out and just have a great time during this
10:59 - 11:03
time. Mhm.
11:04 - 11:09
So my overall impression of this community is that this
11:10 - 11:11
community has a very homey feeling.
11:12 - 11:17
Um it's just a very welcoming community from what I
11:17 - 11:21
gathered from my research, I just it seems very welcoming
11:21 - 11:24
given that even with a lot of the people who
11:24 - 11:27
have moved away and I've come back there just oh
11:28 - 11:31
they're just accepted and welcomed back with open arms and
11:33 - 11:35
um they just have a great time when they come
11:36 - 11:38
back and just to see their family and friends and
11:38 - 11:40
a lot of the people are very accepting of them
11:41 - 11:41
of coming back.
11:42 - 11:47
Um and just very welcoming and home field in terms
11:47 - 11:50
of like a yard sale and just that community, being
11:50 - 11:53
able to come to each other's homes and just talk
11:54 - 11:58
and socialize during yard sales gave me a really homey
11:59 - 12:03
feel. I thought that was very interesting that this community
12:03 - 12:05
has a sense of pride when it comes to his
12:06 - 12:06
to the history of the community.
12:07 - 12:10
Thought that was very interesting because I don't get to
12:10 - 12:14
see a lot of communities really talk about the pride
12:15 - 12:18
and joy of the town that they live in.
12:18 - 12:21
They usually talk about the major city but not more
12:22 - 12:24
so the small town that they live in saw that
12:24 - 12:28
that was very interesting community and I honestly would like
12:29 - 12:31
to even go to the motor speedway event just because
12:32 - 12:34
it looks like everyone has a great time and it
12:34 - 12:37
looks like a really fun event just seeing people just
12:37 - 12:38
write to each other.
12:38 - 12:41
Um so I really enjoyed researching this community.
12:42 - 12:42
Thank you
