00:01 - 00:04
Hi there. So today we're gonna talk about identifying figures.
00:04 - 00:07
So we're gonna talk about the geometrical figures.
00:07 - 00:11
Um We're gonna talk about polygons and we're gonna talk about quadrilaterals,
00:11 - 00:13
which to me are the most important to understand.
00:15 - 00:15
Um
00:16 - 00:19
So let's start off talking about what are geometrical figures.
00:19 - 00:23
So geometrical figures are closed shapes using points, line segments,
00:23 - 00:25
circles and curves.
00:25 - 00:31
So almost any figure that is closed or any shape, for example,
00:31 - 00:35
that is closed is going to be a geometrical figure.
00:36 - 00:36
Um
00:37 - 00:39
There's some that you could
00:39 - 00:41
somehow make up.
00:41 - 00:46
Um But a lot of them just have to be closed in order to be that geometrical figure.
00:46 - 00:50
So for example, we have our circle and that doesn't have any line segments.
00:50 - 00:52
Um But it does have
00:52 - 00:54
all the curves to it.
00:56 - 00:58
Second, we're gonna talk about what is a polygon.
00:58 - 01:02
So a polygon is a closed two dimensional figure created
01:02 - 01:05
from three or more line segments with straight sides.
01:06 - 01:11
So when it comes to polygons, we can't have any curves in our polygons,
01:11 - 01:12
they have to have three or more.
01:12 - 01:17
So for example, you see this equilateral triangle in the image to the side
01:17 - 01:18
that
01:18 - 01:22
has the um minimum amount of sides
01:22 - 01:26
and it has all of its straight lines connecting together. So we have our
01:26 - 01:27
triangle.
01:27 - 01:30
Um we have our square which is a quadrilateral
01:30 - 01:33
from the definition looking up on this picture,
01:33 - 01:36
it says that they have sides of equal length in angles.
01:36 - 01:38
So we all know that our square has all
01:38 - 01:41
four equal sides with 90 degree angles within it.
01:42 - 01:46
Our Pentagon again has equal sides. Um
01:46 - 01:48
The two top ones are equal,
01:48 - 01:52
the two side ones are equal and we know that it has all the angles.
01:52 - 01:54
Um Lastly, we have our hexagon,
01:54 - 01:59
those have all six sides of the same length and all angles of the same
01:59 - 02:00
um
02:01 - 02:02
degree.
02:03 - 02:07
Perfect. So let's move on to what is a quadrilateral?
02:08 - 02:11
So you guys have probably heard all of these different names at least,
02:11 - 02:12
I hope you have.
02:13 - 02:13
Um
02:14 - 02:17
And a quadrilateral is a four sided figure
02:17 - 02:22
which means there's four sides, four angles and four vertices
02:23 - 02:24
over here.
02:24 - 02:29
Our picture to the side, we have squares, rectangles, parallelograms,
02:29 - 02:32
trapezoids, rhombus and kites.
02:32 - 02:39
Um kites are very odd to see um which it is a shape and it is a quadrilateral.
02:39 - 02:43
I just feel like we don't see it a lot within our word problems.
02:43 - 02:46
Um So we see that each of these have four sides.
02:46 - 02:47
Um
02:48 - 02:50
Although the four sides, for example,
02:50 - 02:54
on like the trapezoid are different angles as well as the kite.
02:54 - 02:57
We do notice that they
02:57 - 03:00
do have their four vertices in our four angles and four sides.
03:00 - 03:02
So even though they're different
03:03 - 03:08
lengths in their sides is not all equal, um that still makes it a quadrilateral.
03:08 - 03:11
And as we see in here, we do have
03:11 - 03:15
all geometrical figures. So they all are close shapes
03:15 - 03:18
with points, line segments, circles and curves.
03:19 - 03:21
Um Of course, of course,
03:21 - 03:25
our quadrilaterals are not circles because they have to have four sides,
03:25 - 03:27
four ankles and four vertices.
03:27 - 03:31
But it does follow along with all the other rules for that. And we see that
03:32 - 03:36
we do see a polygon within this with the square and um
03:38 - 03:40
with the square having all the same size,
03:40 - 03:44
um we do see the rectangle in the parallelogram are very similar.
03:44 - 03:45
They just um
03:46 - 03:49
have their different angles and their different side lengths.
03:51 - 03:54
So moving on, we are going to talk about
03:55 - 03:59
what am I? This is gonna be our activity that we are going to do.
04:00 - 04:04
Um I'm gonna do it with you guys just to give you guys the short idea of it.
04:04 - 04:05
And then if your teacher chooses to,
04:05 - 04:08
she can actually do this within the class with you.
04:08 - 04:10
So what am I is um
04:11 - 04:15
this activity where we are going to have different cards
04:15 - 04:17
and we're going to have them paired with the shape.
04:17 - 04:20
And so we're gonna look at the um
04:22 - 04:26
the rules or the clues that they give us and we're going to pair them up with a shape.
04:26 - 04:30
So with the example that I have for you, they're all paired up.
04:31 - 04:32
Um
04:33 - 04:35
But what you will do in your class is we can
04:36 - 04:41
have them cut and split and then you can go from there and make it the activity.
04:42 - 04:45
So this is the example that I have. So
04:46 - 04:50
we have a Pentagon, a hexagon, a rhombus, a square parallelogram,
04:50 - 04:53
trapezoid triangle, octagon and a rectangle.
04:54 - 04:57
So on one side, it's the shape and the other side,
04:57 - 04:59
it's the clothes to match with the shape.
04:59 - 05:03
So within your class, you can cut it right down the middle. Um
05:03 - 05:05
And you can have the matching cards.
05:06 - 05:10
It'd be really fun to have it for each group as they can um
05:11 - 05:12
learn,
05:12 - 05:14
learn the different clues and the different rules of
05:14 - 05:17
each shape and combine them and pair them up.
05:17 - 05:22
So for just a few examples, we have um a Pentagon.
05:22 - 05:23
So I am not a quad
05:24 - 05:30
quadrilateral. I'm a polygon with more than four sides, but less than six sides. So
05:30 - 05:32
we can look at this and be like,
05:32 - 05:35
OK, let's look at our rules for a polygon.
05:35 - 05:39
If it's not a quadrilateral, we don't need to look at the quadrilateral rules.
05:39 - 05:43
So looking at the polygon rules, we see that it has um
05:44 - 05:45
we see that it's a closed figure
05:46 - 05:51
and we see that there are three or more line segments with straight sides.
05:52 - 05:52
So
05:53 - 05:54
what is it?
05:54 - 05:55
It's a polygon
05:55 - 06:00
with the hexagon. We can, we, it tells us right away that it's a polygon. Um
06:01 - 06:03
And it says it has twice as many sides as a triangle.
06:04 - 06:08
So we think about that, we look at our rules and there we go,
06:08 - 06:11
we know that it is a Hexagon.
06:11 - 06:12
Um
06:13 - 06:18
It's just the idea of learning their shapes and learning
06:18 - 06:22
your rules for each shape so that you can identify
06:22 - 06:24
um when it comes to a test or something and you're like, OK,
06:24 - 06:26
what shape are they talking about?
06:27 - 06:29
So this is a super fun activity. Um
06:31 - 06:32
And yeah,
06:32 - 06:34
I think it is great for memorizing your
06:34 - 06:37
shapes and learning the different rules and aspects of
06:38 - 06:39
um geometrical figures.
06:41 - 06:44
Perfect. So lastly, there's a reflection.
06:44 - 06:49
Um So two things you learned in this video and one question you still have.
06:49 - 06:49
So for example,
06:49 - 06:52
two things I have learned from teaching out this video
06:52 - 06:56
is that there are a lot of fun activities to do
06:56 - 06:57
um
06:58 - 07:02
as students independently or with your class as a whole.
07:02 - 07:05
Um There are a lot of amazing things to do
07:05 - 07:10
to learn your shapes and the different rules and attributes of them.
07:10 - 07:12
Um I also learned
07:12 - 07:17
that I do not really know my shapes as well as I thought I did.
07:17 - 07:21
Um I think I could do this activity and I think I could do pretty good on it,
07:21 - 07:23
but I'm not sure how great I would do on it.
07:24 - 07:29
Um And I don't have any questions as I am making this video for you. But
07:29 - 07:32
let me know if you do have any questions and I'm excited to hear from you.
