  1. Good evening, my students.
  2. Hey folks, my name is Mr Holman. I'm your teacher today
  3. as any other day. Really?
  4. And today we're gonna talk about math,
  5. um particularly we're gonna talk about polygons.
  6. Have you ever heard of a polygon? I know I have,
  7. I mean, I'm teaching you about it.
  8. I, I would think I would know what a polygon is if I'm teaching you about it. Right.
  9. Anyway,
  10. today, today, our objective
  11. is that we are going to determine whether something is a polygon or not
  12. based on the criteria
  13. criteria for a polygon
  14. is that the lines are straight, straight up and down, things like that
  15. and that the shape is closed,
  16. meaning that all four sides are connected
  17. or all many sides. It could be more than just four. It could be
  18. 567,
  19. it could be a septagon for it could be noon
  20. which is nine, it could be
  21. a
  22. deagon, which is 10,
  23. the amount of sites. Anyway.
  24. So
  25. we are going to look here at our background real quick.
  26. This is our background for today.
  27. It has some purple and some indigo
  28. and some blue indigo is a combination of both blue and purple.
  29. It can be found on the um
  30. the rainbow,
  31. natural rainbow. It's the I and Roy GB
  32. and I'm going to pull up.
  33. Um I also like this because it has shapes on it, 3d and 3d shapes like this like a sphere
  34. and a cone.
  35. So let's pull up Matha
  36. which we have used in class before.
  37. Go ahead and share my screen
  38. here. We have our poly pad with our virtual manipulate manipulatives. Those are,
  39. that's a long word.
  40. And
  41. as you see, I have all these shapes.
  42. So we are going to determine
  43. whether these shapes are polygons or not,
  44. whether the shapes are polygons.
  45. So let's go through these different ones. I've got my drawing tool here
  46. to mark if an X or a check mark, if it's yes or no.
  47. So let's go with this one.
  48. We have ourselves a big circle.
  49. Let's see. Does it have any straight lines?
  50. Yeah.
  51. Does it uh have any connecting?
  52. Well,
  53. no,
  54. no, it's, it's not poly.
  55. I would say it is not. It's probably gone
  56. also.
  57. What's pretty interesting is that a circle in reality is actually
  58. a bunch of dots put together
  59. because
  60. you have to have a line
  61. and so
  62. lines can't be curved.
  63. You'll learn about this later in high school,
  64. but a circle is actually a bunch of dots. It's not, or a bunch of points.
  65. It's not an actual line or anything of that nature.
  66. Let's uh let's move on to the shape over here
  67. with these three sides
  68. or the line straight.
  69. Yes.
  70. But is it connected?
  71. I will say
  72. no,
  73. there is a gap here
  74. which
  75. therefore qualifies it not as a polygon.
  76. It, it's not,
  77. unfortunately,
  78. let's, let's see.
  79. Here's this one over here, this big, this big shape that I have drawn here
  80. or the line street.
  81. Sure are
  82. 123456. We have a hexagon.
  83. Yes. It's, it's a rather interesting hexagon. It's not a true Hexagon or at least
  84. what you would be, what you would consider Hexagon.
  85. But it actually is a Hixon because it has six sides.
  86. Well, no, it's actually a Pentagon
  87. because there's five outside sign uh sides. This line in the middle just
  88. makes a separate shapes.
  89. But, um,
  90. it actually is a Pentagon. No, a Hexagon. Sorry about that.
  91. Yeah, I didn't think about it but it, it's not like a regular Pentagon that you'd see.
  92. It's,
  93. but it is a pentagonal shape
  94. and all the lines are straight
  95. and they're all connected. So this is a polygon.
  96. Let's, let's move over to this shape down here.
  97. This is a big X with a couple lines crossing down the middle here.
  98. There's some
  99. geometry stuff you learn when it comes to using this shape.
  100. This shape might be familiar to you.
  101. Um
  102. It's similar to this one over here,
  103. but you'll learn, you'll have, when you talk about angles,
  104. you will find that this shape is familiar to you.
  105. I mean, it's not till,
  106. not till high school, early, high school, you'll be doing this kind of geometry.
  107. Let's move on. Shall I?
  108. Um So let's see, the lines are straight.
  109. There's four lines,
  110. they're all straight and they're all connected.
  111. So therefore, that makes this a polygon.
  112. Let's move over here
  113. to this shape.
  114. It is a
  115. combination of two things.
  116. So there are straight lines, yes,
  117. straight lines here.
  118. But this is not a polygon.
  119. Even though you have the shape here of a triangle
  120. mixed in
  121. that a triangle is a polygon. This triangle here is a polygon
  122. but because it is not an individual shape,
  123. it is part of this entire thing here.
  124. There's a gap here that does not make it a polygon.
  125. This is not polygon.
  126. Unfortunately,
  127. let's go over here
  128. to this black widow type shape.
  129. It's on the back of this or Hourglass is another name for it.
  130. The Hourglass picture
  131. or shape,
  132. there's two triangles but together
  133. the straight lines of straight
  134. and they're all connected.
  135. So this is a polygon.
  136. So look at this shape here, shape of an L
  137. and not on her forehead.
  138. Uh You,
  139. if you know the song,
  140. everyone knows the song, smash mouth by smash mouth, but all star,
  141. that's what it does.
  142. Uh Anyway, moving on,
  143. I uh tend to get off track here.
  144. This shape here is an L. It is two straight lines, but it is open
  145. if we're not making it a polygon.
  146. Unfortunately,
  147. then let's move on to this last shape here. We have
  148. a trapezoid,
  149. the assistant. It's, it's considered a trapezoid
  150. actually. No, it's not, never mind. This wouldn't be a trapezoid. It's a, uh,
  151. it's a square,
  152. I think, I don't know. It's not really
  153. zoid because these lines are not parallel
  154. there and it's not a square because it's
  155. not like this here. And even then that's really something of a square.
  156. I don't know what it's called it, but it is
  157. a shape
  158. that I have drawn.
  159. Now, let's see if it's a pogo,
  160. it has the lines are straight
  161. and they're all connected, which makes this
  162. a polygon.
  163. So hopefully,
  164. as you were watching this video, you
  165. could figure out
  166. that which is a polygon and which isn't
  167. the, remember if you remember the criteria for
  168. the
  169. polygon is that it needs to have straight lines,
  170. which
  171. this has straight lines here
  172. and it needs to be closed. So these are closed here.
  173. All these lines are closed together, they connected
  174. and all that,
  175. which makes it a polygon.
  176. Now, if it doesn't have any straight lines like the circle here,
  177. it is not considered a polygon.
  178. I'm sure if you go around
  179. since you've learned about polygons, you can go around and you can say,
  180. hey, look, that's a polygon.
  181. When you're looking at a street sign like a stop sign, which is a hexagon.
  182. Or if you see a
  183. uh a box, you say that's a polygon, three dimensional polygon.
  184. And
  185. yeah, there's all that. So this is all that I have for you today.
  186. Let's stop the screen share.
  187. So you can see my face again. Hey,
  188. thank you guys for watching this video.
  189. I hope you learned something about polygons today
  190. and I'll be sure to catch you in the next one.
  191. Peace.
