00:00 - 00:02
Hi everyone.
00:02 - 00:06
My name is Mark Barnes and today I'll be talking about my
00:06 - 00:12
experience with the social work program and how I hope to improve
00:12 - 00:13
on my journey.
00:15 - 00:16
So to begin,
00:16 - 00:20
we'll discuss the core competencies that I feel
00:20 - 00:23
like I've been able to practice so far
00:23 - 00:30
Um and how I have been able to practice. So the first one is competency six.
00:30 - 00:32
Here we see that
00:33 - 00:36
the competency is to engage in research
00:36 - 00:39
and foreign to practice and practice informed research
00:41 - 00:44
at my internship with Columbia Area Mental Center.
00:44 - 00:49
I've really invested in the dialectical behavior therapy um that they
00:49 - 00:53
do there as well as the behavior therapy in general.
00:53 - 00:59
But I do find that the dialectical behavior therapy that's offered there
00:59 - 01:01
is very research informed
01:02 - 01:04
practice as
01:04 - 01:05
Marshal linen han has
01:06 - 01:13
studied with various populations how to implement this research
01:13 - 01:14
in a meaningful way.
01:15 - 01:15
And
01:16 - 01:20
at every level I've been able to engage with
01:21 - 01:23
dialectical behavior therapy
01:24 - 01:28
through individual psychotherapy group skills, training,
01:28 - 01:32
skills coaching and consultation team
01:32 - 01:37
which has allowed me to really invest in this competency.
01:38 - 01:40
The second competency that I would like to discuss
01:41 - 01:43
is applying human knowledge
01:43 - 01:48
uh sorry, applying human behavior and the social environment.
01:49 - 01:52
So within the behavior therapy program,
01:52 - 01:56
the need to apply human behavior
01:56 - 01:59
and consider the context in which those behaviors occur
02:00 - 02:00
is
02:00 - 02:02
paramount. So
02:03 - 02:06
um with the behavior therapy program,
02:06 - 02:10
I feel like I've really been able to invest in this competency as well,
02:11 - 02:13
helping clients analyze their behaviors
02:13 - 02:16
um Within the context of
02:16 - 02:19
uh there an incident events or kind
02:19 - 02:23
of contributing factors has really highlighted this
02:23 - 02:25
competency for me.
02:26 - 02:29
The third competency that I want to review
02:29 - 02:30
is
02:30 - 02:35
engage assess, intervene and evaluate with individuals, families, groups,
02:35 - 02:36
organizations
02:37 - 02:38
and communities.
02:39 - 02:39
So
02:40 - 02:42
with the behavior therapy program,
02:42 - 02:46
I feel like I've really focused on the individuals
02:47 - 02:48
and groups
02:48 - 02:54
um that I've been able to sit in on uh now anytime we're working with an individual,
02:55 - 02:57
we're always considering the family
02:57 - 03:00
um units that they live in as well as
03:01 - 03:03
kind of the community
03:03 - 03:04
support that they have.
03:05 - 03:06
But
03:06 - 03:11
um this social worker competency has definitely played
03:11 - 03:13
a role in how I've been able to
03:14 - 03:16
benefit from my internship this year.
03:19 - 03:20
Mm hmm.
03:21 - 03:24
Moving on to supervision.
03:24 - 03:28
I will say I would not have been able to get through this year without supervision.
03:28 - 03:30
It's so important
03:30 - 03:36
both within this program and within the practicum field like field internships
03:37 - 03:39
to get supervision. But even beyond that
03:40 - 03:43
I found supervision to be highly valuable for me
03:43 - 03:48
this year as I've tried to balance all of the
03:48 - 03:54
um kind of necessities that come with working with an intense
03:54 - 03:59
population as well as balancing self care and just kind of
03:59 - 04:00
ah
04:01 - 04:02
investing in
04:03 - 04:06
the social worker that I'm trying to develop
04:08 - 04:08
this year.
04:08 - 04:11
I've had an excellent supervisor which has made it really
04:11 - 04:14
easy for me to not have very many challenges.
04:14 - 04:18
I would say that the most challenging thing for me has been
04:19 - 04:19
ah
04:20 - 04:23
coming in contact with a potential client
04:23 - 04:26
needs that conflict with my own personal values
04:27 - 04:31
and my supervisor was there to help me navigate those.
04:31 - 04:37
I think in the future if I have a supervisor who's less involved in my development,
04:37 - 04:39
I would need to kind of
04:39 - 04:42
reinforce this idea that um
04:43 - 04:46
I'm there to learn and they're there to help me learn.
04:49 - 04:57
So my strengths and um my areas of growth are super important to evaluate
04:57 - 05:03
at this point as I'm in the middle of transitioning into my advance here,
05:03 - 05:06
so I felt like I wanted to start with areas of growth
05:07 - 05:10
and what I found throughout this year was
05:10 - 05:13
I need to get comfortable with the uncomfortable.
05:13 - 05:17
I found that a lot of times when working with people who are in distress,
05:17 - 05:23
my tendency is to alleviate their distress or to help them problem solved.
05:23 - 05:26
So that way they don't have as much
05:26 - 05:29
turmoil in the future.
05:31 - 05:33
This first area of growth is really important
05:33 - 05:35
to me because I think it's important to remember
05:35 - 05:43
that we need to sit with clients as they are and accept while also pushing for change.
05:44 - 05:44
Yeah,
05:45 - 05:50
the second area of growth that I think I need to grow in
05:50 - 05:51
is
05:51 - 05:53
self care and
05:53 - 05:57
this is important because if I'm not taking care of myself, then I can't
05:59 - 06:02
um hold the capacity to support the individuals that
06:02 - 06:05
I want to support and so that's something that
06:05 - 06:08
I really found this year um during my internship
06:08 - 06:11
is that I need to invest more in myself care
06:11 - 06:15
as I progress as a social worker.
06:15 - 06:21
The last area that I wanted to kind of highlight was reaffirming my boundaries.
06:21 - 06:23
And what I mean by this is that
06:23 - 06:28
um there were a couple of instances where I found
06:28 - 06:33
that clients had overstepped what I was comfortable with and
06:33 - 06:36
I needed my supervisor support to help
06:36 - 06:39
me realize that they had overstepped my boundaries
06:39 - 06:40
in the future.
06:40 - 06:42
I would like to be able to number one,
06:42 - 06:45
recognize these boundaries myself and then also
06:45 - 06:48
set these boundaries with clients in the future.
06:51 - 06:54
So as far as areas of strength,
06:54 - 06:59
I feel like I have grown in my ability to prioritize prioritize
06:59 - 07:00
client needs.
07:01 - 07:04
Um And I think that with this,
07:04 - 07:06
it's important to remember
07:06 - 07:06
that
07:07 - 07:11
balancing client paperwork and what clients need
07:12 - 07:15
on a daily basis or a weekly basis
07:15 - 07:18
is a struggle. And I think it's something that we all face
07:20 - 07:21
in my internship,
07:22 - 07:23
I found that
07:24 - 07:26
balancing paperwork
07:26 - 07:33
um does not outweigh what the client needs on the day to day basis.
07:34 - 07:35
Additionally,
07:35 - 07:39
my behavioral knowledge has proven to be a strength as I've walked into
07:39 - 07:45
the behavior therapy program through the Columbia uh Columbia area mental center.
07:46 - 07:52
I think that um that has proven to be a strength for me as I try to assimilate
07:52 - 07:56
and adopt some of their practices as they navigate
07:56 - 08:00
with clients through behavioral practices and behavioral change.
08:00 - 08:04
The last area that I want to highlight in terms of strength
08:04 - 08:05
is
08:05 - 08:08
my willingness to seek out feedback.
08:08 - 08:09
Um
08:10 - 08:13
I think it's important to create a culture of feedback
08:13 - 08:14
and
08:15 - 08:22
and the um good nature of trying to grow, I think feedback is necessary, so
08:23 - 08:24
um for me
08:25 - 08:31
uh any opportunity I had to get feedback throughout this practicum I saw out
08:31 - 08:36
and open the door for people to give me both constructive
08:36 - 08:40
criticism as well as encouragements with what I'm doing well,
08:43 - 08:44
so
08:45 - 08:47
as we move on,
08:47 - 08:48
um
08:49 - 08:50
I think that
08:50 - 08:54
moving into this next internship year and my advanced year
08:55 - 09:01
um leadership is at the fore forefront of skills that I want to acquire
09:01 - 09:06
and for me areas of future leadership development for
09:06 - 09:10
myself looked like practice with a more severe population
09:11 - 09:13
because I'm
09:14 - 09:18
interested in diversifying my ability to be effective
09:18 - 09:19
with
09:19 - 09:21
people who have
09:21 - 09:26
various needs and I think growing in that part of the population that
09:26 - 09:29
that I'm exposed to will help me with that
09:29 - 09:31
secondly,
09:31 - 09:34
I think practicing more independently while
09:34 - 09:36
I have appreciated my current internship,
09:36 - 09:38
I would love to see
09:38 - 09:43
myself grow and the ability to manage my own um
09:43 - 09:49
kind of caseload as well as client needs and really
09:49 - 09:53
seek out advice from my peers um when I come
09:53 - 09:56
across a situation that I can't handle on my own,
09:56 - 09:57
I found that
09:57 - 09:59
in my internship so far
09:59 - 10:01
rightfully so for foundation year
10:02 - 10:09
um that I've been um really supported in the sense that people have been
10:09 - 10:12
with me every step of the way and I think the next area of
10:12 - 10:18
growth that I need to be able to practice more independently and with um
10:18 - 10:22
leadership qualities to be able to take on those client needs on my own.
10:23 - 10:24
Thirdly,
10:25 - 10:27
managing documentation of services better.
10:28 - 10:29
I have been
10:29 - 10:31
notorious for
10:31 - 10:35
kind of prioritizing client needs and I think
10:35 - 10:38
one of the areas of growth that I need to grow in is
10:39 - 10:41
um documenting those needs
10:42 - 10:43
and documenting client
10:44 - 10:45
services.
10:45 - 10:51
Um and I think that that will really push me into more of a leadership role as I
10:52 - 10:55
try to support the individuals that I need to support.
10:58 - 11:04
Lastly, I would like to thank everyone who supported me along the way so far. Um
11:04 - 11:09
Being in a master's program is not easy and I think that all of my professors,
11:09 - 11:14
every supervisor that I've had and every mentor that I've had
11:14 - 11:18
have really made the difference for me when it comes to
11:18 - 11:24
uh kind of really navigating everything that social work has to offer.
11:24 - 11:26
So I wanted to give the thanks to everyone
11:26 - 11:31
that has supported me um and really invest in
11:32 - 11:34
everything that social workers offer.
11:34 - 11:39
Uh and I'm looking forward to next year as I continue to grow.
11:40 - 11:42
Thank you for listening. And I hope that
11:42 - 11:44
you continue to grow
11:44 - 11:47
as well because we are all striving
11:47 - 11:50
to support the individuals that we need to support.
11:51 - 11:53
Thank you and have a good
11:53 - 11:54
day
