00:02 - 00:04
Hello team. I am traveling today
00:05 - 00:08
But wanted to make this brief announcement that I'm very excited about.
00:08 - 00:12
We are approaching the 25 year anniversary of our master development,
00:12 - 00:14
city heights urban village.
00:14 - 00:18
So I've been thinking a lot about how we should commemorate this pivotal project.
00:18 - 00:22
It's important that we remind ourselves that 25 years ago
00:22 - 00:25
City Heights had the highest crime rate in san Diego.
00:25 - 00:28
It did not even have a full service grocery store.
00:28 - 00:32
The infrastructure was crumbling on our most culturally diverse neighborhood,
00:34 - 00:36
but when I drive by today and see
00:36 - 00:39
the kids walking from Rosa Parks elementary school on
00:39 - 00:42
their way to the library and outdoor theater
00:42 - 00:44
where my family goes to the farmers market.
00:44 - 00:47
I'm very proud of its lasting impact
00:47 - 00:50
and given the current attention on poor policing.
00:50 - 00:54
I think about the joint use gym that we designed within the
00:54 - 00:59
police station that allows officers to engage the public in healthier ways
00:59 - 01:01
and regarding the retail center
01:01 - 01:06
we may take for granted now how pivotal it was to convince Starbucks and others
01:06 - 01:09
that their stores would be successful in an urban neighborhood.
01:10 - 01:12
From day one that Starbucks patio was
01:12 - 01:15
quickly filled with students and business people
01:15 - 01:19
that these corporate retailers were not aware existed in such high numbers
01:19 - 01:20
further.
01:20 - 01:23
The success of those businesses made it even made it easier
01:23 - 01:27
for independent coffee shops and restaurants to get small business loans.
01:28 - 01:31
Essentially, this project ignited new investment in City Heights,
01:31 - 01:33
but it also gave us credibility.
01:34 - 01:38
So I asked myself how should we commemorate, give ourselves a party,
01:39 - 01:40
give a speech
01:40 - 01:41
give back.
01:43 - 01:43
Mhm
01:46 - 01:48
Yes, give back
01:48 - 01:52
City Heights has given us so many opportunities.
01:52 - 01:55
And while there has been a lot of volunteer work involved,
01:55 - 01:57
we have profited from this community.
01:57 - 01:59
So when habitat for humanity asked if we
01:59 - 02:02
would be interested in sponsoring one home renovation,
02:03 - 02:05
I signed us up for 10.
02:06 - 02:11
As you can see, we're looking at the eight block development of the village.
02:11 - 02:16
The red triangles are the location of five of the 10 homes that we will be renovating
02:18 - 02:18
to be clear.
02:18 - 02:21
These homes all require major construction that will
02:21 - 02:23
take at least six months to complete.
02:26 - 02:29
We'll talk more about funding in the near future.
02:29 - 02:31
But as you can see,
02:31 - 02:33
we're already at 70% of our goal with habitat
02:33 - 02:37
for humanity providing half along with our donation.
02:37 - 02:41
So that only leaves 150 k we're in a great position.
02:41 - 02:41
In fact,
02:41 - 02:44
our ceo would tell you that we're in a much better position
02:44 - 02:47
than he was in the early days of funding the village.
02:47 - 02:47
Okay.
02:50 - 02:54
I understand that you may be concerned about how this will impact your workload
02:55 - 02:56
and it will to some degree.
02:56 - 02:59
But the addition with the addition of a project manager,
02:59 - 03:01
I'm confident that we can do it.
03:01 - 03:03
We love this community.
03:03 - 03:07
We love a challenge and we're used to operating lean budgets as well.
03:07 - 03:08
Be the case here.
03:09 - 03:12
And although this is not in our area of expertise for
03:12 - 03:14
those of you who have interest in single family homebuilding.
03:15 - 03:16
This is great exposure.
03:17 - 03:22
And while we've never worked with homeowners who will have specific wish lists,
03:22 - 03:25
where we always outperform is in our ability to listen.
03:26 - 03:29
Had we not listened to the community leaders in City Heights,
03:29 - 03:33
who pointed us in the right direction, we would not have been awarded this project.
03:34 - 03:34
Lastly,
03:34 - 03:40
going back to how we will commemorate 25 years when these 10 homes are complete,
03:40 - 03:43
we will have a party and there will be a speech.
03:43 - 03:46
It will be a speech of thanks directed to each of you
03:46 - 03:51
for your continued commitment to city link and the communities we serve.
03:51 - 03:53
I look forward to meeting with each of you next week.
03:53 - 03:56
So please bring your great ideas and questions.
03:56 - 03:57
See you soon.
