00:01 - 00:02
Hey, guys.
00:02 - 00:03
And welcome back to another math lesson.
00:04 - 00:08
Today's lesson is, um, adding and subtracting decimal.
00:09 - 00:13
I hope you have your notebooks and pencils ready, and
00:13 - 00:16
you need to write this at the very top of
00:16 - 00:24
the next empty page, adding and subtracting decimals as usual.
00:24 - 00:25
We have a goal.
00:26 - 00:29
Today's goal is I can add and subtract decimals.
00:31 - 00:31
Very simple.
00:32 - 00:35
Of course, if you read the title, you know the
00:35 - 00:38
title, then you would know the goal is very simple.
00:38 - 00:38
Very easy.
00:40 - 00:42
Um, I can add and subtract decimals.
00:46 - 00:46
Like always.
00:47 - 00:48
There are rules to math.
00:48 - 00:50
There are two rules for this lesson.
00:54 - 00:56
Rule number one is line up.
00:57 - 01:00
The decimals line up the decimals.
01:01 - 01:05
So when we line up the decimals, it means that
01:06 - 01:09
all the decimals of all the numbers line up even
01:09 - 01:10
the answer.
01:12 - 01:16
So if we had numbers in here, say it Waas
01:17 - 01:27
two and 7/10 plus three and 16th, then when we
01:27 - 01:32
added them, we would go three carry little one and
01:33 - 01:37
six, so the decimals would line up all the way
01:37 - 01:43
through Rule number one.
01:44 - 01:52
Line up the decimals rule number to add or subtract
01:52 - 01:54
from left to right.
01:55 - 02:03
That means If there's a problem like this one, I
02:03 - 02:08
would begin working it from the left side of the
02:08 - 02:11
problem from the left to the right.
02:12 - 02:17
So I would do five plus seven first, which is
02:17 - 02:20
12 minus three plus nine.
02:21 - 02:26
You should remember this from orders of operations 12 minus
02:26 - 02:29
three, which is nine.
02:31 - 02:36
Last night and then I'm plus nine, which equals 18
02:38 - 02:39
and that would give us our problem.
02:40 - 02:45
Now, of course, when you're doing, um, decimals, your numbers
02:46 - 02:47
will be a little bit bigger.
02:47 - 02:50
You will actually have decimals to add or subtract, but
02:50 - 02:50
that doesn't matter.
02:51 - 02:53
You would still start on the left side and go
02:53 - 02:58
through to the right so that second rule is add
02:58 - 03:00
or subtract from left to write.
03:02 - 03:05
Now, I'm going to stop right here and let you
03:05 - 03:09
answer some addition and subtraction problems using decimals.
03:11 - 03:14
All right, Now I have something that I need you
03:14 - 03:15
to remember.
03:18 - 03:19
There's one more thing.
03:20 - 03:23
If you have a word problem, I need you to
03:23 - 03:27
think What do I know?
03:28 - 03:31
What are all the things that they have given me
03:31 - 03:32
in the word problem?
03:32 - 03:36
What are the things that I know, and then what
03:36 - 03:38
do I need to know to solve the problem.
03:39 - 03:40
What am I trying to find out?
03:41 - 03:43
You have to be able to ask yourself these questions.
03:44 - 03:44
What do I know?
03:45 - 03:46
What do I need to know?
03:46 - 03:47
To solve the problem.
03:49 - 03:53
For example, how can I get the answer?
03:54 - 03:55
What do I need to do?
03:56 - 03:58
Add, Subtract, multiply, Divide?
03:59 - 04:00
How can I get there?
04:02 - 04:02
What do I know?
04:03 - 04:04
What do I need to know?
04:05 - 04:07
How can I get there or get the answer?
04:09 - 04:09
Let's have an example.
04:11 - 04:11
You have $35.50.
04:14 - 04:15
You buy a movie ticket for $15.
04:16 - 04:19
89 cents and music for $12.50.
04:21 - 04:22
How much do you have left?
04:23 - 04:26
Well, what you know is you have $35.50.
04:31 - 04:38
You also know that you bought a movie ticket for
04:38 - 04:43
$15.89. So you started out with $35.50.
04:46 - 04:50
Then you took away $15.89 because you bought a movie
04:50 - 04:55
ticket and music for $12.50.
04:58 - 05:01
So after you bought your movie ticket, you spent $12.50
05:04 - 05:07
to get moved to get music and what you want
05:07 - 05:07
to know.
05:08 - 05:09
It's how much you have left.
05:13 - 05:17
So now we can answer this problem.
05:25 - 05:25
What do you know?
05:26 - 05:30
You know, I have $35 and 50 cents.
05:32 - 05:38
I know that I subtract it or took away $15.59
05:42 - 05:44
because I went to the movies.
05:47 - 05:53
I also know that I took away $12.50 because I
05:53 - 05:54
went and got some music.
05:56 - 05:59
And what I want to know or need to know
05:59 - 06:01
is how much is left.
06:03 - 06:04
Well, that's pretty easy.
06:05 - 06:08
All we have to do now is take away or
06:08 - 06:11
subtract the numbers that we spent.
06:15 - 06:17
This is how you break down a word problem.
06:18 - 06:19
What do I know?
06:20 - 06:21
What do I need to know?
06:22 - 06:23
How can I figure it out?
06:24 - 06:29
So now you can answer the problem by help.
06:30 - 06:35
$35.50 and I have to subtract $15.89.
06:38 - 06:49
I have to do that First 10 or that's one
06:50 - 07:00
14 or that's six one to nine.
07:01 - 07:06
Remember my decimals line up all the way down and
07:06 - 07:09
one, but that's not the end.
07:10 - 07:16
That's how much I have after the movie I also
07:17 - 07:21
went and bought music on the music Waas.
07:26 - 07:30
The music was $12 at 50 cents.
07:32 - 07:36
So of course, all I have to do now is
07:36 - 07:42
subtract how much I got from the music to get
07:42 - 07:42
the right answer.
07:50 - 07:53
I'm going to do that over here on my camera.
07:54 - 07:55
Let's give you guys can see.
08:07 - 08:22
So if I had $19 and 61 cents and I
08:22 - 08:30
had to subtract it from $12.50 because that's how much
08:30 - 08:31
I spent at the movies.
08:32 - 08:37
Now I can subject again 11 seven.
08:39 - 08:42
And that is how much I have left.
08:49 - 08:49
Alright, guys.
08:50 - 08:54
So that answer would be $7.11.
08:56 - 08:58
Now, I want you to go and do a few
08:59 - 08:59
word problems.
09:01 - 09:04
Practice them and I'll see you next time.
