00:04 - 00:06
So who are we talking about here?
00:07 - 00:11
There's pretty explicit references here to the Holy Spirit described
00:11 - 00:13
as the seven spirits who are before the throne.
00:13 - 00:16
Then it explicitly says Jesus's name,
00:16 - 00:19
Jesus is directly referenced as the faithful witness,
00:19 - 00:23
the first born of the dead and the ruler of the kings on earth.
00:23 - 00:25
So that leaves us with
00:25 - 00:26
the one who is
00:27 - 00:29
was and is to come
00:29 - 00:31
and that must be by
00:31 - 00:33
um deduction here, God, the Father.
00:34 - 00:38
The interesting thing is this whole section of where it
00:38 - 00:41
says who is who was and who is to come.
00:41 - 00:44
It's in the nominative case in the Greek.
00:44 - 00:47
And I'm not gonna get into the Greek grammar and bore everybody.
00:47 - 00:50
But that whole section is in the nominative case.
00:50 - 00:55
And that basically when it says He who is who was and is to come,
00:55 - 00:57
it's not a description because of that case.
00:57 - 00:58
It's a name.
00:59 - 01:00
My name is Justin go.
01:01 - 01:05
His name is he who is, who was and who is to come?
01:06 - 01:08
Where does this name come from?
01:08 - 01:13
Well, we go back to Exodus three that we talked about a long, long time ago
01:13 - 01:17
says, then Moses said to God if I come to the people of Israel and say to them,
01:17 - 01:22
the God of their fathers has sent me to you and they ask me, what is his name?
01:22 - 01:24
What shall I say to them?
01:24 - 01:28
God said to Moses, I am that I am
01:29 - 01:33
back in the at the burning bush. Moses was given God's name.
01:34 - 01:36
This name I am that I am
01:36 - 01:39
what we're seeing in revelation when this name is revealed.
01:39 - 01:42
He who is and who was and who is to come?
01:42 - 01:46
This is the Greek New Testament version of the name of Yahweh.
01:47 - 01:48
I am that I am
01:48 - 01:52
remember back in Exodus three here when we learned about the name I am that I am.
01:53 - 01:58
His name is I am that I am. So it implies that he will,
01:59 - 02:05
if he is then anything he says must be even if it hasn't happened yet.
02:06 - 02:10
So his name is important. But if you remember back, we talked a lot about this.
02:10 - 02:14
It's not just the appearance of him or his name
02:14 - 02:17
that is important is that is the most important.
02:17 - 02:20
It's rather the character that your name implies.
02:20 - 02:22
That's why so many times in the Old Testament,
02:22 - 02:26
people's names mean something and it matters what their name is.
02:26 - 02:27
Don't just name them
02:27 - 02:29
Logan Bill dust and whatever
02:30 - 02:31
it means something.
02:31 - 02:32
And I know we do that sometimes but
02:32 - 02:35
theirs really meant something because it shows their
02:35 - 02:38
character hopefully and the character of God and
02:38 - 02:41
I am that I am implies his character.
02:41 - 02:45
When God is going to reveal revelation, then through his son
02:46 - 02:51
and the Holy Spirit to John, these things will come to pass,
02:51 - 02:54
they must come to pass even if they haven't happened yet.
02:54 - 02:56
Because that's part of his name.
02:57 - 03:00
This name shows God was self
03:00 - 03:04
existent. He alone is of himself.
03:04 - 03:08
God is not dependent on anything, everything else,
03:08 - 03:10
everything in the whole world has come
03:10 - 03:13
from something that's dependent on other things.
03:14 - 03:17
This is very plain that God attributes to self alone,
03:17 - 03:22
divine glory because he is self existent and therefore eternal.
03:22 - 03:25
And because of that, he gives
03:25 - 03:29
his being an existence to every creature.
03:29 - 03:30
He always was.
03:30 - 03:34
He is and everything in revelation was going to come to pass all
03:34 - 03:38
the way until the end of time because he is to come also.
03:39 - 03:44
So looking back at revelation 14 and five here after the name of God,
03:44 - 03:49
we get the Holy Spirit who is described as the seven spirits before the throne.
03:50 - 03:54
Are we to think of the Holy Spirit as seven in one?
03:54 - 03:56
Like how we think of the Trinity as three in one?
03:57 - 04:00
I don't think so. I don't think it's meant to be taken like that.
04:00 - 04:04
But we can see that the Holy Spirit is a seven.
04:05 - 04:08
He works in rhythms of seven at creation.
04:08 - 04:13
The spirit is hovering over the waters and then he forms a seven day creation.
04:14 - 04:15
He filled
04:15 - 04:15
basil
04:15 - 04:19
back when he talked about the building of the Tabernacle in a parallel
04:19 - 04:20
sevenfold way.
04:23 - 04:26
Uh We see the spirit give seven gifts to
04:27 - 04:29
Jesus who in revelation carries out the work of de
04:29 - 04:34
creation in a new creation which involves tons and tons
04:34 - 04:37
and tons of sevenfold sequences in the trumpet seals.
04:37 - 04:40
And all these other things that we're seeing all the time.
04:40 - 04:44
Seven is also the number of the Sabbath.
04:44 - 04:49
So I think when we see the Holy Spirit as the seven, as the sevenfold thing,
04:49 - 04:55
we see the Holy Spirit is driving things toward sabbatical rest, to completion,
04:55 - 04:57
to rule.
04:58 - 05:01
And we're gonna see this drive throughout revelation.
05:01 - 05:04
We'll talk more about the specific instances as we come upon them.
05:05 - 05:07
So lastly, in this trine
05:07 - 05:13
introduction, here, we see Jesus described and he's described as three things,
05:13 - 05:18
the faithful witness, the first born of the dead and the ruler of the kings of earth.
05:19 - 05:23
So this is a direct reference to Psalm 89.
05:23 - 05:27
Let's read a couple of verses that talk about these specific attributes.
05:27 - 05:28
So Psalm 89 27 says,
05:28 - 05:33
and I will make him the first born the highest of the kings of the earth.
05:33 - 05:36
So there we took care care of two of the characteristics already.
05:36 - 05:40
And then Psalm 89 a little later in that same chapter,
05:40 - 05:43
it says his offspring shall endure forever his throne.
05:43 - 05:45
As long as the sun before me, like the moon,
05:45 - 05:49
it shall be established forever a faithful witness in the sky.
05:49 - 05:51
There's that third one.
05:52 - 05:57
God makes David his first born and the highest of the kings of the earth. It says
06:00 - 06:05
David. David's throne. God promises him will be like the sun before God
06:05 - 06:08
and the kingdom will be established like the moon,
06:08 - 06:10
the faithful witness in the heavens.
06:11 - 06:15
So these connections are showing us that Jesus is being singled
06:15 - 06:19
out as the final king in the line of David.
06:19 - 06:21
The final divita king,
06:21 - 06:23
God promises him
06:23 - 06:24
that he will be
06:26 - 06:29
the fulfillment of what God had promised to. David.
06:29 - 06:33
The threefold description of Jesus is showing us these things.
06:35 - 06:39
How does this relate or does it relate to us at all?
06:40 - 06:43
Let's read the last verse that we're gonna do today,
06:43 - 06:45
the end of five and then verse six that we're gonna tackle today.
06:45 - 06:47
And that'll give us an answer I think
06:48 - 06:49
says
06:50 - 06:54
to Him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his
06:54 - 06:58
blood and made us a kingdom priest to his God and father to him,
06:58 - 07:00
be glory and Dominion forever and ever.
07:01 - 07:04
All right, we got another chart for you guys because I know you love them so much.
07:05 - 07:07
This is just a small one though.
07:07 - 07:11
So we had three ways that Jesus was described
07:12 - 07:14
and those were he was a faithful witness.
07:14 - 07:18
He was the first born of the dead and he was the ruler of the kings.
07:19 - 07:21
In the verse we just read here though,
07:21 - 07:25
there are also three things listed three actions of Jesus.
07:25 - 07:28
And it says He loves us.
07:28 - 07:32
He freed us from our sins by his blood, and he made us a kingdom.
07:34 - 07:37
So we can make some connections and deepen our understanding
07:37 - 07:40
of these things with these two sets of three things.
07:40 - 07:43
First, Jesus says he loves us.
07:43 - 07:47
This connects us with Jesus's attribute, attribute that he is faithful.
07:48 - 07:50
So when we talked about God is love.
07:50 - 07:53
Well, that also means he's faithful, then we can connect these things.
07:53 - 07:55
He's the faithful witness
07:55 - 07:58
that will never lead, leave his bride
07:58 - 08:00
because he loves her.
08:01 - 08:06
The second thing that is said is he who freed us from our sins,
08:06 - 08:10
freeing us can connect up with being the first born of the dead,
08:10 - 08:12
being the first born from the dead through Jesus.
08:12 - 08:18
We also have been freed from the bondage of our sins and are able to be with Christ.
08:18 - 08:19
When we leave this earth,
08:20 - 08:24
this connects with that um the sheet. The first sheet that goes up.
08:25 - 08:30
The third thing listed in his actions is he made us a kingdom
08:30 - 08:33
and that matches pretty nicely with the third attribute of Jesus
08:33 - 08:36
where he is the ruler of the kings of the earth.
08:38 - 08:39
We can see
08:39 - 08:42
one more parallel with these three categories.
08:42 - 08:44
We're gonna make the chart a little bit bigger
08:44 - 08:49
and that has to do with basically the opposite of Jesus and his characteristics.
08:49 - 08:55
This parallel parallel has to do with his enemies, the enemies in Revelation,
08:56 - 09:01
if we look at Revelation 13, we'll see two of these enemies right away.
09:01 - 09:06
First up, Revelation 13 3 says one of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound,
09:06 - 09:08
but its mortal wound was healed and the
09:08 - 09:11
whole earth marbled as they followed the beast,
09:12 - 09:14
let's play a little matching game here.
09:14 - 09:20
Where does this enemy match up this beast with these categories that we already have
09:21 - 09:22
when you have a guess,
09:24 - 09:26
where would that go with? This beast?
09:29 - 09:32
East is wounded, he dies and he's healed.
09:33 - 09:38
Jesus is the first born of the dead. He died, but he's alive again
09:38 - 09:43
here. The beast mocks that event in a way and dies and is also healed.
09:44 - 09:45
So this enemy,
09:45 - 09:48
the beast goes right there in the middle and
09:48 - 09:50
it matches up with Jesus dying and being resurrected.
09:50 - 09:53
That's what the beast does. He dies and is resurrected.
09:54 - 09:56
Next, let's read,
09:57 - 09:59
um Later on in revelation 13, it says,
09:59 - 10:02
then I saw another beast rising out of the earth.
10:02 - 10:05
It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon.
10:05 - 10:08
It exercises all the authority of the first beast in,
10:08 - 10:11
in its presence and makes the earth and its inhabitants
10:11 - 10:15
worship the first beast whose mortal wound was healed.
10:15 - 10:18
It performs great signs even making fire come down
10:18 - 10:20
from heaven to earth in front of people.
10:20 - 10:24
And by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast,
10:24 - 10:27
it deceives those who dwell in or telling them to make an image
10:27 - 10:31
for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived.
10:32 - 10:37
So now there is this false witness and you'd get that more if
10:37 - 10:40
we kept reading that this was already a long enough passage to share.
10:40 - 10:41
But
10:41 - 10:45
there's more that you can see that this is the false prophet, the false witness.
10:45 - 10:49
So this false witness is performing wonders and
10:49 - 10:52
it's getting everyone to worship the beast.
10:52 - 10:53
So
10:53 - 10:58
what do, what one does this false witness match up with? This one is pretty easy,
10:59 - 11:00
matches up with the first one,
11:00 - 11:04
Jesus is the faithful witness and now we're seeing the false witness.
11:06 - 11:12
All right. So lastly, we have Jesus as the ruler of the kings of the earth.
11:12 - 11:15
Let's take a look at that. That's revelation. 17.
11:15 - 11:18
And the woman that you saw is the great city
11:18 - 11:20
that has Dominion over the kings of the earth.
11:21 - 11:23
This is talking about the Harlot.
11:23 - 11:28
So the Harlot has Dominion for this period of time over the kings of the earth.
11:28 - 11:30
So that obviously goes in the last slot.
11:30 - 11:34
The Harlot thinks that she controls the kings of the earth,
11:34 - 11:35
but
11:35 - 11:42
Jesus is the true beast. He is the lion and the lamb, the true faithful witness.
11:42 - 11:43
The true head of the bride.
11:44 - 11:49
Jesus is the true measure of all things including his enemies.
11:51 - 11:52
We're gonna stop there
11:52 - 11:53
for today.
11:53 - 11:58
This dip, this just dips our toes into the deep, deep,
11:58 - 12:02
deep end of the pool of who the revelation of Jesus
12:03 - 12:03
is.
12:04 - 12:08
He is a faithful and loving person.
12:08 - 12:13
He is faithful and loving of his bride. He is a willing savior who came to die
12:13 - 12:16
in order for us to have life.
12:16 - 12:22
He conquered the kings of the whole world so we could be made kings alongside him
12:23 - 12:27
as we went through Genesis and the fall then into
12:27 - 12:31
Exodus and God's miraculous saving of his people from bondage
12:31 - 12:34
to his grace in giving them in Leviticus,
12:34 - 12:37
a new sacrificial system to atone for their sins.
12:38 - 12:42
We see Israel needing a forever answer to all the problems that they
12:42 - 12:47
had and would ever have because of that original fall because of sin.
12:47 - 12:51
God didn't leave them out to dry though he promised them that he would care for
12:56 - 12:59
be his people and he would be their God.
12:59 - 13:01
He promised them
13:01 - 13:02
a savior.
13:02 - 13:06
Everything the Lord promised everything Israel hoped for.
13:06 - 13:10
Everything that the world needs is summed up in Jesus.
13:10 - 13:14
All the old Testament we've learned over and over and over again
13:14 - 13:16
that it points to him.
13:16 - 13:21
The new Testament is all about him and revelation sums
13:21 - 13:24
it all up fully revealing who he truly is.
13:25 - 13:29
It's such a blessing to be able to read and hear this book and go be doers of it.
13:30 - 13:35
Colossians 1 13 through 20 says he has delivered us from the domain of darkness
13:35 - 13:40
and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved son in whom we have redemption,
13:40 - 13:42
the forgiveness of sins.
13:42 - 13:45
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
13:45 - 13:51
For by Him, all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,
13:51 - 13:54
whether Thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.
13:54 - 13:57
All things were created through Him and for him
13:57 - 14:01
and he is before all things and in Him, all things hold together.
14:02 - 14:04
He is the head of the body, the church.
14:04 - 14:05
He is the beginning,
14:05 - 14:10
the first born from the dead that in everything he might be preeminent for in Him,
14:10 - 14:13
all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell and through him,
14:13 - 14:17
to reconcile to himself, all things, whether on earth or in heaven,
14:17 - 14:20
making peace by the blood of his cross.
14:21 - 14:21
Let's pray
14:24 - 14:29
dear heavenly father. We thank you for your grace and mercy towards us.
14:29 - 14:31
Lord, we thank you for sending your son Jesus.
14:31 - 14:35
That is all of these things that we just read about in revelation. And
14:36 - 14:40
in here we thank you Lord that through the blood of his,
14:40 - 14:44
shed his, through his shed blood on the cross. Lord,
14:44 - 14:46
that we can come and we can have
14:46 - 14:48
communion and fellowship and come before your throne.
14:48 - 14:52
Lord, we just thank you heavenly Father for
14:52 - 14:56
sending him to take Dominion over all the kings of the earth.
14:56 - 14:59
Lord that one day we can rule as priests and kings along.
