00:02 - 00:02
today,
00:02 - 00:05
I'm going to talk briefly about my experiences
00:05 - 00:08
with the honors program and how I learned
00:08 - 00:10
what it meant to be an honor student at
00:10 - 00:14
Nebraska the semester specifically through how we interact with
00:14 - 00:18
the three pillars in our day to day lives and can use those things going forward now.
00:19 - 00:21
What exactly are the three pillars and how have
00:21 - 00:24
my perspective changed over the course of the semester,
00:24 - 00:26
starting off with health and well being.
00:26 - 00:30
This first pillar focuses on some of the things that we can do
00:30 - 00:33
in order to promote ourselves and our well being on an emotional,
00:33 - 00:37
spiritual, physical mental capacity.
00:38 - 00:41
What this means for me is taking time when I have
00:41 - 00:44
a busy schedule ahead of me or I know that I have
00:44 - 00:47
an upcoming an assignment or a test that I'm stressed about
00:47 - 00:50
and really reflecting on how well I've been taking care of myself
00:51 - 00:54
sometimes, that means taking a break,
00:54 - 00:58
sometimes it means finding a snack or getting a big glass of water,
00:58 - 01:03
but these small steps can really help propel success in the future simply
01:03 - 01:06
because when you're not at your best you don't do your best work.
01:06 - 01:08
So that's kind of what I've learned.
01:08 - 01:11
I went into this semester thinking that maybe I could
01:11 - 01:13
go through just like I had done in high school.
01:13 - 01:15
However, I realized that
01:15 - 01:17
the types of work that I'm doing are different and
01:17 - 01:20
it takes a different toll on my health and well being
01:20 - 01:23
and so understanding what works for me has been important in
01:23 - 01:26
my development of what I understand health and well being,
01:26 - 01:27
to mean
01:27 - 01:30
the second pillar is academic and professional development.
01:30 - 01:33
It's all about setting yourself up for success,
01:33 - 01:37
be it studying for a test, filling out resumes,
01:37 - 01:40
applying for jobs and internship opportunities. Now,
01:40 - 01:41
coming in this semester,
01:41 - 01:45
I knew that professional development would be a part of the college process.
01:45 - 01:47
However, I didn't realize how fast
01:48 - 01:49
it would all come.
01:49 - 01:49
You see,
01:49 - 01:53
I was applying for internships just a few weeks into
01:53 - 01:55
college and it was overwhelming to say the least.
01:55 - 01:57
I didn't know myself,
01:57 - 02:00
let alone how was I going to sell myself to a potential employer?
02:00 - 02:04
And so some of the things that we learned in our honors impact, how to reinforce this,
02:04 - 02:06
and I'll get into that in just a few minutes.
02:06 - 02:11
Um, the final pillar is community engagement and global awareness.
02:11 - 02:15
This pillar focuses mostly on how we engage on campus,
02:15 - 02:17
what types of clubs that we can get involved
02:17 - 02:19
with as well as how we engage with our community
02:19 - 02:22
here in Lincoln and then how we engage with
02:22 - 02:26
communities elsewhere in the world and understanding different religions and
02:26 - 02:30
community involvement activities as well as um
02:30 - 02:32
just differences that make people unique,
02:32 - 02:35
special, important all of that is kind of encompassed in this pillar.
02:35 - 02:37
And I do think that I've learned a lot
02:37 - 02:40
in my time at college about things like diversity and
02:40 - 02:44
how I can be a better proponent of those who may not have a voice of their own.
02:44 - 02:44
Um
02:45 - 02:46
now
02:48 - 02:50
the next thing I'd like to touch on my honors impacts
02:50 - 02:53
and the takeaways that I have from those unique experiences.
02:53 - 02:55
When we talked about health and well being,
02:55 - 02:58
we actually got a chance to visit the Sheldon Museum of Art,
02:58 - 03:00
which I had never been to before.
03:00 - 03:03
I'm from Kansas city and we do have a few art museums, but this one was
03:03 - 03:05
much more simplistic,
03:05 - 03:09
much more minimalist and what this helped me do was reflect not
03:09 - 03:12
only on the artwork but on myself at a better capacity.
03:12 - 03:15
After we went and walked around the gallery for
03:15 - 03:17
a few minutes looked at the artwork and whatnot.
03:17 - 03:20
We went outside and we um took a chance to just
03:20 - 03:22
meditate out in nature and it was a beautiful day.
03:22 - 03:25
I remember there were squirrels running around and they kept distracting us
03:25 - 03:28
and we didn't actually do that great of a job meditating.
03:28 - 03:29
However,
03:29 - 03:31
this did give me the chance I needed to de stress
03:31 - 03:35
and stop thinking about things like my upcoming calculus exam.
03:35 - 03:39
Um and I definitely will visit this museum again when I feel stressed
03:39 - 03:43
and overwhelmed because that type of experience was really beneficial to me.
03:43 - 03:45
And I think that I could value from more
03:45 - 03:49
opportunities to take a step and put myself first.
03:50 - 03:54
Now the second honors impact that we did was we met in
03:54 - 03:58
a study room at the library and we took personality tests.
03:58 - 04:04
One of these was the Myers Briggs test and what I discovered is that I am an I N. T. J.
04:04 - 04:08
Now I didn't know exactly what that meant coming in but we talked about it and it means
04:08 - 04:11
that I'm a little bit more introverted and that
04:11 - 04:15
sometimes I need to assess the situation before I act
04:15 - 04:19
and I take in a lot of input and handle it in unique ways and a lot of
04:19 - 04:21
these things while maybe I understood that I didn't
04:21 - 04:24
necessarily know how to explain it to somebody else.
04:24 - 04:31
And so this kind of codification of personality um was really useful. This uh
04:31 - 04:34
pillar is academic and professional development
04:34 - 04:36
and I think that understanding yourself and
04:36 - 04:41
your personality and how that applies to your potential future is very important.
04:41 - 04:44
And it's something that I'm glad that I learned in this experience now
04:45 - 04:46
The 3rd and Final
04:47 - 04:51
honors impact was we met up and we talked
04:51 - 04:54
about the different clubs and organizations that we're involved with
04:54 - 04:57
here in Nebraska or the clubs that we'd like
04:57 - 04:59
to be involved with and I really liked this.
04:59 - 05:01
I was interested to see what types of things
05:01 - 05:04
of their freshman were getting involved in on campus
05:04 - 05:07
because I know you're overwhelmed those first few days
05:07 - 05:08
with all the different clubs that are setting up
05:09 - 05:11
booths and what not telling you
05:12 - 05:15
which clubs to join, which friends to be a part of.
05:16 - 05:21
And so not only did I get a chance to share some of my own clubs with my peer mentors
05:21 - 05:23
but I got a chance to learn about
05:23 - 05:27
some of the other opportunities available on campus,
05:27 - 05:30
and this helped me understand community engagement
05:30 - 05:32
and global awareness a little bit better
05:32 - 05:34
because I didn't even realize how many
05:34 - 05:36
opportunities there truly working on campus.
05:44 - 05:44
Now.
05:44 - 05:46
The third thing I'd like to talk about is leadership
05:46 - 05:50
and what that means to me here in college now,
05:50 - 05:52
leadership means a few things,
05:52 - 05:58
but um to me it's mostly understanding when to take charge and
05:58 - 06:01
use your strength and knowing when to let others use theirs.
06:03 - 06:06
We talked briefly about this during one of our class periods,
06:06 - 06:11
how a leader can take a step back and analyze the situation and then move forward,
06:11 - 06:12
not only with their best interests at heart with,
06:12 - 06:15
but with the best interest of the team at heart
06:15 - 06:18
and leadership can function in a few different ways,
06:18 - 06:21
but using these three pillars in order to understand it,
06:21 - 06:24
I think really helps give it a little bit more of a real world impact.
06:24 - 06:28
So talking about things like health and well being with leadership,
06:28 - 06:31
being a leader means that you're taking time to notice when people
06:31 - 06:34
on your team are struggling with their health and well being,
06:34 - 06:36
it's monitoring your own health and well being so that you
06:36 - 06:39
can put the interests of your team ahead of your own
06:39 - 06:39
um
06:40 - 06:42
as well as academic and professional development,
06:42 - 06:46
you have to understand how you can develop as an individual,
06:46 - 06:49
as well as how your team can develop going forward in
06:49 - 06:52
order to create the best product or the best vision,
06:52 - 06:54
whatever you may be working on in your team
06:55 - 06:58
that involves a lot of futuristic thinking, which I think that
06:59 - 07:01
I learned a little bit more from talking about things like
07:01 - 07:05
academic and professional development and then the third and final pillar,
07:05 - 07:06
um
07:06 - 07:09
talking about global awareness and community outreach,
07:09 - 07:13
I think that leadership ties very closely with understanding your
07:13 - 07:17
community because a team is a very small community.
07:17 - 07:19
If you really think about it, it's
07:19 - 07:23
different engagements between individuals that make
07:23 - 07:25
up the larger unit and so understanding
07:25 - 07:28
each of your team members and the things that they hold dear.
07:28 - 07:29
Maybe there have hobbies,
07:29 - 07:33
they have clubs that they are part of understanding what drives them,
07:33 - 07:36
helps you be a better leader in that long run as well.
07:38 - 07:41
The fourth thing I'd like to touch on is failure.
07:41 - 07:46
The challenges that I faced here at college now, I went into college very,
07:46 - 07:50
very optimistic and I still am largely however,
07:50 - 07:53
I did not realize the types of challenges that
07:53 - 07:56
I would potentially face in my time here.
07:56 - 07:57
So now
07:57 - 08:01
the first and I would say probably the most impactful challenge that
08:01 - 08:05
I faced is the coronavirus pandemic and the changes that it's required.
08:05 - 08:06
Um,
08:06 - 08:11
it takes a little bit extra care and caution to engage with
08:11 - 08:13
people in the same way that I've been engaging my entire life.
08:13 - 08:16
I have to change some of those aspects in order to make sure that
08:16 - 08:20
everybody is safe and secure and putting their best interests before my own.
08:21 - 08:23
Um and so I have had to be flexible with some
08:23 - 08:28
of my classes when they have to move online or when I
08:28 - 08:32
have people in my dorm who are getting positive tests and they're
08:32 - 08:35
locking up some of the areas that are more common space.
08:35 - 08:38
Unlike the lobby as well as the student lounge,
08:38 - 08:40
those types of challenges were simply
08:40 - 08:43
unpredictable and that made it a lot harder for
08:43 - 08:45
me to put forth the best version of myself.
08:45 - 08:49
But when I'm able to rely on some of the things that I learned about the three pillars,
08:49 - 08:54
I can reflect on my own health and well being and understand that when I put on a mask,
08:54 - 08:57
I'm not just doing it for my well being that I'm doing it for everybody else's
08:57 - 09:01
as well and I'm trying to promote my community in order to ensure that we can
09:01 - 09:04
create a better future academically and professionally.
09:04 - 09:06
I've also been challenged in some of my coursework,
09:06 - 09:09
I took a lot of math in high school,
09:09 - 09:13
so I figured that I would continue to be very successful in Matthew in college,
09:13 - 09:14
but I realized that
09:14 - 09:18
a lot of the things here in college are different than they were in high school
09:18 - 09:21
and that's something that I've come to reflect on these past few weeks as well.
09:22 - 09:22
Um
09:23 - 09:27
now the final thing that I would like to talk about are my goals going
09:27 - 09:32
forward and how my time in the honors program has helped me reflect more broadly,
09:32 - 09:38
um, as a potential computing major as well as a potential future engineer.
09:38 - 09:39
Um,
09:39 - 09:44
so I have had several goals over the course of my time
09:45 - 09:49
on this planet, I suppose, and now those goals have been a little bit more directed.
09:49 - 09:52
They started off sprawling in many different ways.
09:52 - 09:55
And now that I'm at college, I realized that I can hone in on some of my skills,
09:55 - 09:58
some of my strengths in order to understand how I could better pursue those goals.
09:58 - 10:03
Now, for me, that means building off of my smart goals that I built this semester.
10:03 - 10:06
Now, my first goal was to get an internship over the past few weeks,
10:06 - 10:09
I've been meeting with potential employers and I actually succeeded
10:09 - 10:11
on that goal and that's just the first step in like
10:12 - 10:16
creating a better future for myself as well as for my
10:16 - 10:19
community because I can contribute in those types of ways.
10:19 - 10:23
So now I would say that my next goals are continuing to excel in the classrooms that
10:23 - 10:26
ultimately I can graduate with a meaningful degree and
10:26 - 10:28
then create a difference in the real world.
10:28 - 10:29
After college,
10:29 - 10:31
I'd like to go to law school
10:31 - 10:33
where I could potentially become an intellectual property
10:33 - 10:36
lawyer and secure people's ideas so that they
10:36 - 10:38
don't have to worry about whether or not
10:38 - 10:39
those ideas are at risk.
10:39 - 10:43
And I think that's one way that I can use my strength in order to
10:44 - 10:47
help the broader good and I didn't know that coming into college.
10:47 - 10:52
But some of the activities that we've done in our honors impacts as well
10:52 - 10:56
as in the classroom or just talking to one another have helped me realize that
10:56 - 11:00
conversations and things are what I'm good at as well as
11:01 - 11:05
the different things that I can bring to the table, understanding my personality.
11:05 - 11:06
All of those
11:07 - 11:08
steps that I've taken
11:09 - 11:10
in order to
11:11 - 11:13
secure an internship this summer
11:13 - 11:14
as well as
11:16 - 11:18
a better future for myself,
11:18 - 11:20
have helped me to set goals
11:21 - 11:22
that
11:22 - 11:24
I hope will come to fruition.
