Transcript of The Outsiders

He is the main character of the story, and he is fourteen years old. He is the youngest of three brothers. He is a in a gang with Johnny, Darry, Sodapop, Two-Bit Mathews Steve Randle and Dally.
After a fight with his brother Darry, he runs away with Johnny. They then meet (by accident) a group of socs. David, one of the socs, tries to drown him. Johnny then kills another soc to defend himself and Ponyboy. Johnny and Ponyboy run away to another town so they don't get caught.

"I have light-brown, almost-red hair and greenish-gray eyes. I wish they were more gray, because I hate most guys that have green eyes, but I have to be content with what I have. My hair is longer than a lot of boys wear theirs, squared off in the back and long at the front and sides, but I am a greaser and most of my neighborhood rarely bothers to get a haircut. Besides, I look better with long hair." page 1
Ponyboy Curtis (Greaser)
He is a in a gang with Ponyboy, Johnny, Darry, Sodapop, Two-Bit Mathews and Dally. He is Soda's (Ponyboy's brother) best friend but Steve doesn't like Ponyboy that much because he thinks Ponyboy is just a tagalong and a kid. Pnyboy sometimes hates him.

"Steve Randle was seventeen, tall and lean, with thick greasy hairhe kept combed in complcated swirls. He was cocky, smart, and Soda's best buddy since grade school. Steve's specialty was cars. He could lift a huncap quicker and more quietly than anyone in the neighborhood, but he also knew cars upside-down and backward, and he could drive anything on wheels." page 9
Steve Randle (Greaser)
He is in a gang with Ponyboy, Two-Bit, Dally, Darry, Steve and Soda. He is Ponyboy's best buddy from the gang and their friendship builds up as the story goes on, especially because they become "partners in crime" when Johnny defends Ponyboy and himself when some socs try beating them up. He kills one of them and they run away together so they don't get caught. He gets badly burnt after he rescues kids from a fire and sadly dies from his injuries when Dally and Ponyboy come to visit him after the rumble.

"If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you'll have Johnny. He was the youngest, next to me, smaller than the rest, with a slight build. He had big black eyes in a dark tanned face; his hair was jet-black and heavily greased and combed to the side, but it was so long that it fell in shaggy bangs across his forehead." page 11
Johnny Cade (Greaser)
The Outsiders
By Katherine Neal

He is Ponyboy's oldest brother, and he is rough with Ponyboy. Ponyboy thinks Darry does not like him. He is twenty years old. He only lets himself being teased by Soda. He is a in a gang with Ponyboy, Johnny, Sodapop, Two-Bit Mathews, Steve and Dally.

"Darry is six-feet-two, and broad-shouldered and muscular. He has dark-brow hair that kicks out in the front and a slick cowlick in the back--just like Dad's--but Darry's eyes are his own. He's got eyes that are like two pieces of pale blue-green ice. They've got a determined set to them, like the rest of him. He looks older than twenty--though, cool, and smart. He would be real handsome if his eyes weren't so cold. He doesn't understand anything that is not plain hard fact. But he uses his head." page 6
Darrel Curtis (Greaser)
Sodapop Curtis (Greaser)
Soda is Ponyboy's second oldest brother and understands Ponyboy better than Darry. Soda is seventeen years old. He likes to tease Darry. He is in a gang with Ponyboy, Johnny, Darry, Two-Bit Mathews, Steve and Dally. He has a girlfriend, Sandy, but she moves to Florida later in the story.

"Soda is handsomer than anyone else I know. Not like Darry--Soda's movie-star kind of handsome, the kind that [eople stop on the street to watch go by. He's not as tall as Darry, and he's a little slimmer, but he has a finely drawn, sensitive face that somehow manages to be recklessand thoughtful at the same time. He; got dark-gold hair that he combs back--long and silky and straight--and in the summer the sun bleaches it to a shining wheat-gold. His eyes are dark brown--lively, dancing, recklessly laugning eyes that can be gentle and sympathetic one moment and blazing with anger the next." page 7
He is a in a gang with Ponyboy, Johnny, Darry, Sodapop, Steve Randle and Dally. Ponyboy likes him because he keeps him and the gang laughing.

"Two-Bit Mathews was the oldest of the gang and the wisecracker of the bunch. He was about six feet tall, stocky in build, and very proud of his long rusty-colored sideburns. He had gray eyes and a wide grin, and he couldn't stop making funny remarks to save his life. You couldn't shut up that guy; he always had to get his two-bits worth in. Hence his name. Even his teachers forgot his real name was Keith, and we hardly remembered he had one. Life was one big joke to Two-Bit. He was famous for shoplifting and his black-handled switchblade (which he couldn't have acquired without his first talent), and he was always smarting off to the cops." page 10
Two-Bit Mathews (Greaser)
Dallas Winston (Greaser)
He is a in a gang with Ponyboy, Darry, Sodapop, Two-Bit Mathews, Steve and Johnny. He also helped Ponyboy and Johnny to run away when they killed Bob, the soc that tried drowning Ponyboy. He tells them where to go and gives them dry clothes and a little money. After the rumble, Dally and Ponyboy go visit Johnny at the hospital. After Johnny dies, he runs out of the room and robs a store. He gets shot by the police because he shows them his gun, even if it wasn't loaded. He took that gun out because he really wanted to die, so his death was kind of a suicide.

"If I had to pick the real character of the gang, it would be Dallas Winston--Dally. I used to like to draw his picture when he was in a dangerous mood, for then I could get his personality down in a few lines. He had an elfish face, with high cheekbones and a pointed chin, small, sharp animal teeth, and ears like a lynx. His hair was almost white it was so blond, and he didn't like haircuts, or hair oli either, so it fell over his forehead in wisps and kicked out in the back in tufts and curled behind his ears and along the nape of his neck. His eyes were blue, blazing ice, cold with a hatred of the whole world." page 10
Sherri Valance (Soc)
She is a soc, and is Bob's (the soc who was killed by johnny) girlfriend. She also agreed to be a
(she gives them information about the socs and where they are ect.)

for Ponyboy's gang.

She has red hair and green eyes. She met Ponyboy, Dallas and Johnny at an outdoors movie. She was very impatient with Dallas but admitted she could fall in love with him and that she admired him. She was very soft with Ponyboy and Johnny. Troughout the book, Cherry tries to change Ponyboy's perspective about the socs by showing him that they also have problems of their own.

"Boy, she was good-looking. I'd seen her before; she was a cheerleader at our school, I'd always thought she was stuck-up" page 21
"She was cute, but that Cherry Valance was a real looker" page 25

Randy Adderson (Soc)
He is Marcia's (Cherry's freind) bofriend and he is one of the socs that was there when Johnny killed Bob. Ponyboy talks with him at one point and he realizes that Randy is just a regular guy that also has problems. Randy explains to Ponyboy that he is tired of being a soc and having to fight all the time because the Greasers will never be considered better than the Socs, even if they win the rumble, simply because the Socs have all the advantages. (It isn't fair, and he is sick of it.)

"I took a good look at him. He was seventeen or so, but he was already old. Cherry had said her friends were too cool to feel anything, and yet she could remember watching sunsets. Randy was supposed to be too cool to feel anything, and yet there was pain in his eyes. " page 115-116
Bob Sheldon (Soc)
Bob wears rings and he is the soc that beat up Johnny at the beginning. Bob is the soc that Johnny killed. He was Randy's best friend since grade school, and he was Cherry's boyfriend. Randy tells ponyboy that Bob's parents never really disciplined him and that no matter what he did, they would blame themselves without ever telling Bob "no".

"He had been a sophomore that year--that would make him about eighteen when he died. Yeah, he was good-looking even then, with a grin that reminded me of Soda's, a kind of reckless grin. He had been a handsome black-haired boy with dark eyes--maybe brown, like Soda's, maybe dark-blue, like the Shepard boys'. Maybe he'd had black eyes. Like Johnny. page 161-162
Marcia (Soc)
She is Cherry's friend and is Randy's girlfriend. She meets Ponyboy, Two-Bit, Johnny and Dally with Cherry. She befriends Two-Bit that night because they share a similar sense of humor.

"Marcia grinned at us. She was a little smaller than Cherry, She was cute, but that Cherry Valance was a real looker." page 25
Tim Shepard (Greaser)
He is the leader of another Greaser gang and is a friend of Dally's (even if they often fight). His gang sides with Ponyboy's the night of the rumble. Ponyboy notices that his and Tim's gang are different: Tim's gang has a leader and they are organized whereas Ponyboy's is a group of actual friends who stick together.

"Tim was a lean, catlike eighteen-year-old who looked like a model JD you see in movies and magazines. He had the right curly black hair, smoldering dark eyes, and a long scar from temple to chin where a tramp had belted him with a broken pop bottle. He had a tough, hard look to him, and his nose had been broken twice. Like Dally's, his smile was grim and bitter. He was one of those who enjoy being a hood. The rest of his bunch were the same way." page 138
Paul Holden (Soc)
He is a soc that steps forward to challenge Darry at the beginning of the rumble. Paul and Darry were friends and football teammates back in high school. He hates the Greasers and that is what seperated them (the sides: Socs and Greasers). He makes the first punch on Darry which then starts the rumble.

"I heard Soda give a kind of squeak and I realized that the blond was Paul Holden. He had been the best halfback on Darry's football team at high school and he and Darry used to buddy it around all the time. He must be a junior in college by now, I thought." page 142
Curly Shepard (Greaser)
He is Tim Shepard's fifteen year old little brother. He can't participate to the rumble because he was put in a reformatory for six months after robbing a liquor store. Ponyboy likes curly a lot because he can take anything. He is a member of Tim's gang.

" "what happened to Shepard?" I asked, remembering Tim Shepard's kid brother. Curly, who was tough, cool, hard-as-nails Tim in miniature, and I had once played chicken by holding our cigarette ends against each other's fingers." page 134
Sandy (Greaser)
Sandy and Soda
She is Soda's girlfriend and gets pregnant with another guy's child and moves to Florida so she can live with her grandmother. Soda does not really know why she moved away. At some point, he sends her a letter but it comes back unopened. Soda was very sad about that. Ponyboy liked her, more than the other greaser girls.

"I liked her just fine, though. Her hair was natural blond and her laugh was soft, like her china-blue eyes. She didn't have a real good home or anythingand was our kind--greaser--but she was a real nice girl." page 15
Jerry Wood
He is a teacher. He was there when the old church fire started. He accompanies Ponyboy in the ambulance and tells him he and his friends (Johnny and Dally) are the bravest kids he had seen in a long time.

"I remembered who he was then--Jerry somebody-or-other who was too heavy to get in the window. He must be a school teacher, I thought." page 94
Mr. Syme
He is Ponyboy's English teacher. Ponyboy's English grades get worse after everything that happens to him, so mr.Syme decides to talk to him. He will give him a C grade only of Ponyboy comes up with a good theme to right about for the semester assignment.

"It bothered my English teacher, the way I was goofing up, I mean. He's a real good guy, who makes us think, and you can tell he's interested in you as a person, too."
Evie and Sylvia (Greasers)
Evie: She is Steve's girlfriend.

Sylvia: She is Dally's girlfriend, but they brake up in the beginning of the story because she cheated on him while he was in jail.

''I thought of Sylvia and Evie and Sandy and Two-Bit's many blondes. They were the only kid of girls that would look at us, I thought. Tough, loud girls who wore too much eye makeup and giggled and swore too much. I liked Soda's girl Sandy just fine, though.'' page 14
Johnny's parents
They are very abusive parents. They beat Johnny up a lot and they do not care about him. is father drinks a lot. Johnny refuses to see his mother when she comes to visit him at the hospital because he absolutely hates his parents.

''I didn't know exactly what I meant, but I was thinking about Johnny's father being a drunk and his mther a selfish slob,...'' page 43
The Curtis parents
They are Ponyboy, Soda and Darry's parents. They died eight months earlier in a car accident. Ponyboy had loving and caring parents.

''Since I was dreaming I brought Mom and Dad back to life... Mom could bake some more choclate cakes and Dad would drive the pickup out early to feed the cattle. He would slap Darry on the back and tell him he was getting to be a man, a regular chip off the block, and they would be as close as they used to be. Maybe Johnny could come and live with us, and the gang could come out on the weekends, and maybe Dallas would see that there is some good in the world after all, and mom would talk to him and make him grin in spite of himself. ''You've got quite a mom'', Dally used to say. ''She knows the score''. She could talk to Dallas and kept him from getting into a lot of trouble. My mother was golden and beautiful.'' page 48
Buck Merill
He is Dally's rodeo partner. Darry and Soda had ordered Ponyboy not to go within ten miles of his place, but after Johnny killed that soc, he and Johnny went to Buck's house looking for Dally, since he was at a party there. Ponyboy does not like him very much.

''I didn't like Buck Merrill. He was a tall lanky cowboy with blond hair and buckteeth. Or he used to be bucktoothed beforehe had the front two knocked out in a fight. He was out of it.'' page 58
The judge
He only appears in the last chapter during Ponyboy's hearing, but he actual influences the end of the story a lot, since he decides if Poyboy will be sent in a boys' home or if he will stay with his brothers. He finally decides to aquit Ponyboy. Ponyboy's doctor had talked to the judge before the hearing.

''Then he said I was aquitted and the whole case was closed. Just like that. Didn't even give me a chance to talk much.'' page 168
