-name based off of the german word for white mass, wissmuth
-element can be found independently in nature, but usually mixed with other metals such as iron, tin, lead, or cadmium
-alloys made from this and other metals are often used in electrical fuses, bismuth is also found in medicines, cosmetics and bullets
-this element has been known since the 15th century, discovered and named by Claude Geoffroy in 1753
-changes color depending on oxidization
