Transcript of The Red Hunting Hat

The Hat and the Carousal Phoebe Helps Holden The Hat and Phoebe The begining of the hat The Lack of Protection The Hat and Allie The Hat is Protection from the Maturity/Growing Up Holden uses his hat as a form of protection from maturity and growing up. The Red Hunting-Hat "I took off my coat and my tie andf unbuttoned my shirt collar, and then I put on this hat that id bought in New York that morning. It was a Red Hunting hat, with one of those very, very long peaks. I saw it in the window of this sports store when we got out of the subway, just after I noticed I'd lost all the goddam foils. It only cost me a buck." pg 17
-Holden buys the hunting hat after he loses the fencing equipment. He doesn't handle the situation maturly and it is very strange that he would buy a hat after disapointing the fencing team. "My hunting hat gave me quite a lot of protection, in a way, but I got soaked anyway." pg 212-213
Holden wears his hunting hat while it is raining when he and Phoebe are at the the carousel. The rain could represent the adult world coming down on Holden. He tries to protect himself with the red hunting hat, but realizes that it can only protect him to a certain extent; no matter how hard he tries to avoid growing up, it has to happen and the hat becoming soaked proves this. Holden's deceased brother, Allie, had very red hair, like the red hunting hat that holden wears.
"I'll tell you what kind of red hair he had. I started playing golf when I was only ten years old. I remember once, the summer I was around twelve, teeing off and all, and having a hunch that if I turned around all of a sudden, I'd see Allie. So I did, and sure enough, he was sitting on his bike outside the fence- there was this fence that went all the way around the course- and he was sitting there, about a hundred and fifty yards behind me, watching me tee off. that's the kind of red hair he had."
-Holden explains that Allie's red hair stood out, just as his red hat does.Wearing this red hunting hat could be a way that Holden stays connected with Allie, even though he is no longer alive. Holden's deceased brother, Allie, had very red hair, like the red hunting hat that holden wears. Phoebe gives holden a lot of money when he comes home because he is broke. Giving the money to Holden was very MATURE of Pheobe and it makes Holden sad: "Then, all of a sudden, I started to cry. I couldn't help it." pg 179 -Holden probably feels bad because he feels like this will make Phoebe grow up faster and take away from her childhood because now she is supporting her brother.
"Then I took my hunting hat out of my coat pocket and gave it to her." -Holden is giving her what keeps him red, or youthful. Even though he loves the hunting hat, he loves Phoebe more and wants her to stay "red" for as long as possible. Giving the hat to her comforts him and is his way of repaying her. when Holden takes Phoebe to the carousal, it starts to rain, "then what she did-it damn near killed me-she reached into my coat pocket and took of my red hunting hat and put it mon my head." pg 212 Whether Phoebe knows it or not, her putting the hat on Holden made him feel safe and protected.
