If Only the Finest Birds in the Forest Dared to Sing,
How Quiet the Forest Would Be
If only the best readers dared to read,
how ignorant our country would be.

If only the best singers dared sing,
how sad our country would be.

If only the best athletes engaged in sports,
how weak our country would be.
-William W. Purkey
It's not about being THE BEST.

If you choose to break the rules:
Lastly,
WOW! That was a TON of information!
What is one aspect of our school/class rules that stood out to you?
Share with your partner!
Strong communities are multifaceted, which means they have many aspects that work together to make them successful.
Today, we are going to look at two of those parts.
A mission statement states what the community values.
For example, one school wrote:
Our mission is to develop young men and women with active and creative minds, a sense of understanding and compassion for others, and the courage to act on their beliefs.
In our classroom we will use one phrase to represent our mission statement:
#CultureofCare
So, what does this mean for our classroom?
Think with a partner or individually:
What should our values be (respect, kindness, etc.)?
How should we treat one another?
What is our focus in class?
What will make our classroom community a successful community?
Another vital aspect of our community is....
YOU!
We are all
diverse
and bring new experiences, knowledge, and abilities to our class.
Sand Bottle
A jar filled with soft colors resembles a class of peers,
A jar full of memories that will last throughout the years.

Friendships built within our room are possibly forever,
Knowing we can rely on each other for our newest endeavor
You will each color a portion of the salt and add it to the bottle to represent our diversity and unified goal to learn!
How it works:
1.
Teacher says, "Gestures!" and puts up arms.
2.
Students "mirror" the teacher by putting up their arms, too.
3.
The teacher will teach something with gestures, while student copy the teacher WITHOUT speaking.
4.
The teacher will say, "Teach!" and the students will say, "Ok!" while turning to a partner
Let's Practice!!
Practice!!
What will this NOT look like?
