Class Discussion on Cultural Modeling & Funds of Knowledge Usman Ather Esther Wang Deidra Coleman Beatriz Gomez Chris Nho Discussion Q's Discuss a time when you felt that your culture background was addressed by a teacher? What about a time when you felt that your culture was ignored? Should teachers devote themselves to double aims, by teaching both traditional and culturally based curriculum? What are the consequences of such attempts? Talk about a cross-cultural experience or relationship you’ve had with someone that altered your perceptions of them or their culture. What did you learn? What kinds of things can you do to learn more about your students’ cultures, families, and communities? Social studies: analysis of local voting patterns or local housing patterns, location of public libraries, racial profiling by police officers or airport security. Science: study location of toxic waste sites in rural communities, safety of food supply, effects of lead paint in urban areas What are practical ways to teach students of different cultures? Math: use statistics related to local everyday items or interactions that require math. English: multicultural literature that would help students understand the perspective of the socially oppressed Debate I. Bilingual education: How should teachers regard native languages or cultural dialects (such as “Black English”) in the classroom? 2. Academic tracking: Should schools use academic tracking? (Feel free to draw on personal experience.) 3. Low teacher expectations: Scenario: A student walks into your classroom late, throws down his backpack, and starts talking with another student. You call out his name and ask him to begin the assignment.
