How does Light Emitting Diode Work?
LIGHT EMITTING DIODES, commonly called LEDS, are real unsung heroes in the electronics world. They do dozens of different jobs and are found in all kinds of devices. Among other things, they form numbers on digital clocks, transmit information from remote controls, light up watches and tell you when your appliances are turned on. Collected together, they can form images on a jumbo television screen or illuminate a traffic light.

LED lights work using one of the simplest light emitting diodes. This diode is silicone based. It has both a positive material and negative material sandwiched beside each other, when they are combined they create a p-n junction. This p-n junction is the area in which the light is created.
Example of uses in the world
Their inventions have found their way into bedside lamps, television screens, and smartphones, and have the potential to give light to the 1.5 billion people who don’t have access to electricity grids, according to the Nobel Assembly.

LEDS are mostly used for two things: illumination and indication. These are technical words but are good to understand because if you want an LED for one thing and you buy the wrong thing you'll be pretty bummed.
