Prejudice,
Discrimination
and
Stereotypes..
I know what you are thinking.. What are these confusing words? Well, why don't I tell you!
PREJUDICE:
DISCRIMINATION:
Dictionary definition- Treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category.
STEREOTYPES:
Dictionary definition- A simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group.
Dictionary definition- An unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.
So now we all get those I am going to go into some detail about some topics that fall under these categories. They are racism, sexism, ageism, cultural prejudice, religious prejudice and physical (appearance) prejudice! Cool! Lets get to it!
RACISM:
Dictionary definition: Hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
This is from the 60's: an example of racism
Here is a youtube clip from Remember the Titans.. See if you can spot the racism.
MY THOUGHTS:
My opinion on racism is that it is a cruel, selfish thing that was used to make one race feel superior and one feel worthless. The fact that bugs me the most is that the tone of ones skin can effect their whole life, the way someone would treat someone of their race is completely twisted into a awful way of seeing another human being. It annoys me that some can’t at least try to look past the skin of a man and find out what kind of personality that person has, they can't see that underneath that skin we are all the exact same kind, we all function in the relatively same way. I do not think that racism should be accepted at all especially now that the so many have been educated about the hurt it can cause. When you peel back the layers of two oranges they both look the same!
A BIBLE VERSE:
SEXISM:
Dictionary definition- Discrimination or devaluation based on a person's sex, as in restricted job opportunities; especially, such discrimination directed against women.
This is a short clip off She's the man which shows sexism. Can you see it?
MY THOUGHTS:
I don’t think that sexism should never be okay. I think that it is a way for one to have some kind of control over a gender, that some things are not acceptable and some are. It is absurd! Women/girls shouldn’t have to be accepted to be good at sewing, they aren’t always gossips and they can make decisions for themselves! They don’t need a man to guide them along, we are just as good as any man! Men/boys can be good at sewing, and they can enjoy nice bubble baths and it in normal for them to cry, I don’t think it is appropriate to accept someone not to let out their feelings just because of their sex. If a little boy picks up a barbie doll, he probably doesn’t see it as a girls doll that people think he shouldn’t play with because it will make him some kind of wuss, he sees it as a fun, interactive activity to keep him entertained. Sexism are twisted guidelines that try to control the way people want to be!
AGEISM:
Dictionary Definition- Discrimination against persons of a certain age group.
This is an example of ageism
Here is the trailer for a film called The First Grade. Can you spot the
ageism?
This is a picture example of sexism
My Thoughts
I don’t understand why people are ageist. I don’t get how the year someone is born can effect their daily lives. I think that the elderly are just as strong if not stronger that the young. They are wise (most of them), they are necersarilly grumpy and they don’t just eat prunes. They were children, teenagers and adults. They have learnt from their mistakes and used it to help them, the fact that people don’t see that is insane. They are capable to do close to everything someone young can do and vise versa. Some elderly think that all kids do is get up to mischief. Yes some do indeed but that doesn’t mean it goes for all of them, I see myself as being very responsible, not going off and acting in stupidity. I think it is very black and white to think of kids as troublemakers. I think that when people are ageist they are just trying to make people feel bad about their age.

A BIBLE VERSE:
CULTURAL PREJUDICE:
Dictionary Definition- The act of judging a foreign culture for meaning
and moral value.
Here is a picture example of what I think is cultural prejudice. In eastern countries women do what is on the left and western women do what is on the right and here we say that the left is wrong and women can't do that. I don't think that is anyone's place to have a controlling opinion,
I am going to share a brief version of a news story that has been around recently regarding the Miss World (beauty type pageant) being held in Jarkarta, Indonisia.
So.. The Miss World wanted to be held in Jarkarta which is has a very large Muslim and Hindu community. Many were not happy about the fact that is was going to be held there so there ended up being lots of protests to stop it. They were not happy because their culture intends for women and men to be quite covered up and in the Miss World Pageant this is not always the case. It is a very two sided argument as I think that Miss World needs to respect the culture in Jarkarta but also that they would have enjoyed to host it there. It is now going to be hosted in Bali.
MY THOUGHTS:
I do find cultural prejudice a bit confusing but I figured out that it is prejudice toward a cultures festivals, things they eat ect. I don't think it is your place to have a negative opinion against ones culture as you do not know what it means to them or the religion if it is a part of one ( I am pretty sure cultural and religious prejudice are very similar). It is someone’s own choice which religion they want follow and how they celebrate it is also their choice not yours.
A BIBLE VERSE:
RELIGIOUS PREJUDICE:
Dictionary Definition-Bias, discrimination or prejudice against those from religious tradition different that your own.
I apologise for the next video as some of it is in another language but I think it still shows a very strong message. Also it is also referring to stereotype but try to think about the religious prejudice.
MY THOUGHTS:
In my opinion I don’t think anyone should be discriminated against because of their religion. No one can prove who is right because everyone has a different perspective. I also hate that some religions are being punished because of what someone else in that religion did (photo of the twin towers.) I don’t think they are the ones that deserve to be punished, I don’t think anyone should be punished, we are killing people because they killed people but don’t we always say that killing people is wrong? Then there are the people trying to escape from it (refugees) and a very little amount of people are willing to take them in. It is a silly, vicious cycle! Someone’s religious beliefs are their own and you have no right to tell them what to do, and the fact is I really dought you will convince them to change their mind, they will probably just keep it to themselves which is also a terrible thing. If you think you need to control someone elses beliefs that is crazy!
The first picture I will show is religious prejudice but the second one I think is very powerful, saying that we are punishing a whole religion, innocent people for what 19 men did.
PHYSICAL PREJUDICE:
Dictionary Definition- Prejudice or discrimination based on physical appearance; e.g. hair, piercings, tattoos ect.
This is a photo example of physical prejudice
This quick video they are making fun of the girl Monica because of her weight which I think is very similar to physical prejudice.
MY THOUGHTS:
The fact that the way someone looks can effect peoples vision of them is so silly! Some peoples point of view is so odd I find like if you have lots of piercings or tattoos you aren’t as highly regarded as someone who is doesn’t have those things. For all you know they are very special to them and they convey their sense of style. That is their choice not yours and if you think it is your job to decide what they look like you are wrong. They have every right to look as they wish, I think it is so unfair for someone to not be able to get a job ect. because of the way they look.
A BIBLE VERSE:
So what to take out of this? Well the one thing you can do is before you judge someone and chuck them aside get to know what they are like first then you can decide how you feel. Thanks!
