REST AND DIGEST RESPONSE
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
FLIGHT-OR-FIGHT RESPONSE
ADRENERGIC
Release norepinephrine
Most are in sympathetic postganglionic neuron
Two types of receptors; Alpha and Beta - subtypes based on response elicited and selective binding of drugs that either activate or block it
Longer effect than cholinergic
CHOLINERGIC
Release acetylcholine (ACh)
Located at sympathetic and parasympathetic preganglionic neuron, sympathetic postganglionic neuron which innervates sweat gland and parasympathetic postganglionic neurons.
Two types of receptors; muscarinic & nicotinic
Nicotinic ACh activation: depolarization
Muscarinic ACh activation: depolarization & hyperpolarization

AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
PARASYMPATHETIC
Originated from craniosacral (III, VII, XI, X S4-S6)
The distribution is limited to head, neck and trunk only
The ganglia is on or close to the effector organ
Preganglionic and postganglionic axons are short.
The neurontransmitter is only acetylcholine
SYMPATHETIC
Originated from dorso - lumbar (T1-L2)
Widely distributed
The ganglia are away from effector organs
Preganglionic axon is short and myelinated
Postganglionic axon is long and nonmyelinated
The nerotransmitters are norepinephrine (major) and acetylcholine (minor)
