Transcript of Emotional Intelligence

design by Dóri Sirály for Prezi
Hi!
How do you feel today?
I'm here to tell you about Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and how it's relevant to your
GLOW experience. Ready?
Let's go!

Emotional Intelligence
(
EQ
) is:
the ability to
recognise
emotions (in yourself and the others)
understand
these emotions and the
reactions
resulting from them
be able to
manage
the emotions and reactions occurring in yourself and the others
I know you are
still wondering
what EQ is...
This training will:
Tell you
what EQ
is
Show you a great 30-min training by Dr. Mitchel Adler on how to
develop
your EQ
Give you a few short and exciting tasks and inspire a
discussion
with your mentor!
Show you how
relevant
this is to GLOW
Give you tips on how to
manage
different personalities and situations at the Academy
Talk about the importance of
confidentiality
and
tact
at the Academy
Still
unclear
?
This is totally
fine
!
Watch the
video
by Dr. Adler and you'll become an
expert
! Make sure you take your time to
understand
all he is talking about. Pause and
rewind
if needed! Also, do the
4

tasks
he encourages you to - we will need them later.
When watching, please pause and write down:
5
triggers/buttons
for your
4
basic emotions
Hint:
What are the 5 things
that make you glad/mad/sad/scared immediately?
What happens with your
body
every time you feel glad/mad/sad/scared? What
actions
do you take then?
Hint:
Do you sweat, shiver, can't help but smile? Can people see/feel this?
10
things that you do to take
care
of your emotions
Hint:
How do you relax after a stressful day? What do you do when you are very happy, but need to keep calm and keep working?
Your
mission
statement as a leader (GLOW staff).
Hint:
What is your goal as a GLOW staff member and how you work for it? Write
1 sentence only :)
Ready?
Go to the
next frame
for the
video
! :)
He explained it pretty well, right! Now your task is to think about how all this relates to your experience in
GLOW
- past, present, and future.
In your next talk with your
mentor
in June you can discuss:
Your triggers and reactions, as well as ways to
manage
your emotions. Ask them what do they do to
relax
during the
Academy
?
What are the most
stressful
situations they have dealt with and how did they manage? What would
you do
if in their shoes?
What are
GLOW
situations that will make you glad/mad/sad/scared? Discuss their resolutions with your mentor.
are extremely important
when dealing with emotionally charged situations and the campers in general. Here's some
advice
on:
Tact
and
Confidentiality

How to show your
respect
towards the campers and other staff members
How to resolve
sensitive
issues
What is
staff-only
information and what could be shared
You will hear and see a lot from the campers...
their personal problems
their habits
their team/room-mate issues
their fears and desires
their opinion of GLOW
their opinion of you...
And you should share all important information with
Sustainability Team (ST)
because they will:
analyse the problem
give you advice
be prepared to react in case things get serious
BUT
You should
not
:
Because:
It is private and sharing it might affect the girls and ruin their trust in GLOW
Comment on it in the presence of other campers
Start resolving major issues without consulting ST
You might not be aware of the full situation and possible solutions
We all have
prejudice
, it helps us take decisions fast in a new environment.
Remember
:
However, they are based on our
limited
immediate knowledge about someone.
Our role as staff at the Academy is to
assist
the girls achieve their
full potential
. Thus, we should challenge any prejudice we have, stay
empathic
,
understanding
, and
supportive
.
As Dr. Adler says, if someone's behaviour makes you mad, ask yourself what it is
about you
or your current situation that
triggers
this emotion. Then, you will have more
potential
to deal with the issue and
help
the girl do her
best
.
So you now know...
How you feel and how your body reacts to that
That others could feel and react in a very different way
How to manage your emotions and reactions
How to manage the information you have access to at GLOW
How to tackle complicated GLOW situations
So, what would you do to deal with a..
hygiene issue
workload issue
friendship issue
personality issue
be a mediator
expectation issue
be empathetic
show it right
be well-prepared
be non-judgemental

How would you react in the GLOW
situations
discussed and what advice would your mentors give you?
