ICTs are Information and communication technologies.
ICT (information and communications technology - or technologies) is an umbrella term that includes any communication device or application, encompassing: radio, television, cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems and so on, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning.
Many, if not all, of these ICTs can be used in the classroom to increase and enhance student learning. ICTs like games and apps can easily be used in the classroom to engage students and enhance their learning. Games learning sites like Reading Eggs and Mathletics use play based learning to help students learn English and Mathematics concepts such as addtion, subtraction, word groups, and spelling. The students are rewarded based on their achievements in the different games. These games also make use of different scoreboards that show a student's achievement status in comparison to others. While this comparison could possibly make students feel inadequate they can also motivate students to do better and try to achieve a higher achievement status. These gaming sites are a form of gamification.
Gamification is the concept of applying game mechanics and game design techniques to engage and motivate people to achieve their goals. Gamification taps into the basic desires and needs of the users impulses, which revolve around the idea of status and achievement (Gamification, n.d.). Using gamification in the classroom helps to motivate and inspire students to do well in their learning as well as helps some students overcome the dislike of learning or school. Gamification is a great way to either help students learn a new topic or to solidify and practice conceptual knowledge. Gamification can also be seen in many other apps, online games and gaming websites such as the FunBrain.com, learninggamesforkids.com, and abcya.com. These all have different learning games for students that help them to practice and understand different Maths, English, Science, Arts, and Reading concepts and skills.

Where is it?
ICTs are EVERYWHERE!
Not really, but it is very easy to access useful ICTs or to repurpose seemingly unhelpful technologies for your needs.
You can even use ICTs that you might think you can.
Although it may seem that some ICTs are only for certain people or for certain purposes ,that may not always be the case. You can usually repurpose most technologies for educational purposes. Apps like Angry Birds can be repurposed to help students understand the concept or angles or trajectory. Another example is using the bom.gov site as a resource for teaching and learning about the weather and weather patterns instead of just using it as a way to tell when it is going to rain and where. These are not traditionally educational resources but by looking at them through an educational point of view you can see that the Angry Birds app uses angles to calculate the optimum trajectory and path that the bird must take to take out the pigs and their fortress. The bom.gove site's rain radar shows a short loop of the upcoming rain fall and give predictions and warnings about upcoming weather. This could be used to help students with weather predictions, and with understanding general weather patterns. By repurposing technologies instead of not using them you can expand your resources and can find new ways to everyday online games, apps and websites into learning experiences that can enhance the quality and validity of students' learning.
However there are also multiple educational resources are already available online to help enhance student learning, like some of the websites and programs mentioned earlier. All of these examples can either be found on the internet with a quick google search or by searching on App downloading sites and apps like Apple Apps. These are just some example of the many different apps that can be use to help enhance student learning and to provide new and exciting ways of presenting information and teaching your students.
ICTs are for everyone.
ICTs are available to everyone and only require basic knowledge to operate effectively. ICTs knowledge and career options should be offered to everyone regardless of gender stereotypes.

ICTs are technological devices, apps, games,online websites, and many more that fall under the umbrella term of ICT. This includes gamification technologies that useplay based learning to help students learn and practice different concepts from different learning areas.
You can use ICTs whenever an opportunity or need to use them arises.
ICTs can be used to enhance student learning and to provide assistance for teaching. One approach to teaching ICTs is the TPACK model which incorporates content, pedagogy/activities, and technology into a teaching/learning plan.
ICTs are almost everywhere and you can find usefulness out of seemingly useless technologies and applications.
Helpful ICTs can be found online, on multiple devices and in applications, and even in places you don't think they could be. Repurposing technologies allows you find learning opportunities in almost all games, apps and websites that may not necessarily have an educational purpose.
ICTs need to be used to help develop students' knowledge and skills about safely using an aspect of everyday life that the curriculum requires students to know and learn.
ICTs are now apart of everyday life and need to be taught to students so that they can effectively use and navigate these ICTs when needed. Students must also be shown and taught how to safely use ICTs so that not harm, either psychological or physical, comes to them. Being able to use these safely responsibly and ethically is required by both the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership and the Australian Curriculum and Assessment Reporting Authority.
Why use it?
They are an essential part of our everyday lives.
As mentioned earlier ICTs are becoming more and more depended on for everyday tasks and activities. Therefore being fluent in all aspects of ICTs are essential to be able to navigate this new aspect of everyday life.
To develop skills and to teach students to be cybersmart.
By using ICTs in the classroom you are exposing your students to essential knowledge and helping them further develop their own skills and understanding of ICTs. This also includes Cybersafety and knowing what to do if an undesirable event occurs online. If you don't expose students to ICTs and teach them how to be safe online they might end up in a bad situation where they could be hurt, psychologically or physically. This is also a requirement of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (AITSL, 2014) which says that teachers must use ICTs safely, responsibly and ethically. This includes the safe, responsible, and ethical teachings of ICTs to students.
It is required by the Curriculum.
Using ICTs is a general capability required to be able to complete some the required curriculum standards. Incorporating it into your is teaching and into student learning is essential for students to be able to achieve competency in all required curriculum standards. ICT is also apart of multiple learning areas such as The Arts, and Technologies. These learning areas have a heavy focus on using and learning about ICTs and are required to be taught within the classroom.
Who can use it?
Anybody can use ICTs.
All you need is some basic knowledge about how to operate a device and then the world is your oyster.
Everybody should use ICTs.
ICTs are a prominent part of today's society and being able to navigate and use them is an essential part of everyday life. This means that in order for anyone to be active members of today's society they need to be proficient in ICTs.
Due to our societies rise in technological dependence, more and more jobs, essential daily tasks, and certain responsibilities require the proficient use and knowledge about ICTs. This means that all children need to fluent ICT users.
ICTs are commonly thought of as male centered or dominated however ICTs are just as much for girls as they are for boys. By teaching and using ICTs in the classroom you can better empower all students to become fluent ICT users and contributors. Unfortunately girls are not widely recognized as being proficient and capable ICT users. This is not true as everyone can become proficient ICT users and contributors with practice.
The journal article about women and ICT by Beekhuyzen, Clayton, and Nielsen (2012), says that women are largely underrepresented in most ICT fields, and that gender stereotypes still prevail in a world where proficient ICT use is an everyday occurrence by everyone. They also say that studies show that girls are not being shown many ICT career options during their schooling, which may be a result of gender stereotyping or lack of literature and information about girls and ICT. To help combat this our classrooms need to be more accepting and open to all the possibilities and need to provide students with options and ideas about ICT jobs, careers and activities.
Everyone can, and should, use and be fluent in ICTs as they are an ever growing essential part of everyday life.
When can you use it?
You can use ICTs whenever you want to.
ICTs are versatile resources that can can always be used to help enhance student learning. This can be done either through the use of gamification and play based learning, or you can use it in other ways such as for displaying or presenting information, researching, giving students new ways to do and present their work, and many, many more.
You should use and teach ICTs whenever possible in the classroom.
As mentioned before today's society is becoming more and more technologically dependent. To make sure your students are prepared for this and to become fluent in all aspects of ICT you need to incorporate as much ICT knowledge and practice into your learning as possible. One way of approaching ICT teaching is the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) teaching approach.
It is about more than simply adding ICT to traditional approaches. It depends upon deep knowledge of how ICT can be used to access and process subject matter (TCK) and understanding how ICT can support and enhance learning (TPK) in combination with PCK (Teaching Teachers for the Future, n.d.). TPACK is a frame work for teaching ICTs that can easily be implemented into your classrooms to help enhance students' learning of the knowledge and skills required to be fluent ICT users and contributors.
An example of this model in action is on the Public schools of North Carolina Website (2013). This example is of a Social Studies lesson on the civil war. An overview of the lesson is detailed below with the TPACK elements being highlighted:
The students will first be taught about the civil war, learning key concepts and looking at different perspectives from people from the war (Content). The students will then learn how develop a story, in narrative form, in the perspective of someone from the Civil War, which they will then turn into a short documentary (Content and Pedagogy/Activity). The students will then do the activity in three stages: research, writing and production (Pedagogy/Activity). The research phase will include a range of print materials, websites, online pictures, and Internet searches, all of which they will record on index cards (Technology and Pedagogy/Activity). During the writing phase students will write each section separately, getting feedback from parents and the teacher, and by the end they will have a completed script (Pedagogy/Activity). During the production phase students will develop a storyboard for their documentary and identify any music, sound effects, titles and transitions they want in their film (Pedagogy/Activity and Technology). Using the storyboard as a blue print, the students will then make their documentary using Microsoft's Movie maker software (Pedagogy/Activity and Technology). Their final product will the be presented to the class (Pedagogy/Activity).
This lesson makes use of all the essential elements of TPACK, integrating them into the lesson, to gives students a meaningful learning experience that incorporates ICTs to enhance student learning.
