PULLEYS AND GEAR
Transcript of PULLEYS AND GEAR
HOW ARE THEY MADE?
PULLEYS AND GEARS
Worm gears are gears attached to a kind of stick. The gears move the stick. The stick can also be used to move the gear. Worm gears can also be operated with just one gear.
SCIENCE PROJECT: PULLEYS AND GEARS
A steam locomotive is a railway locomotive that puts its pulling power through a steam engine. It is similar to a train. Steam locomotives are usually big, long and weigh a lot. Some even have rooms inside! Steam locomotives run on train tracks and are fast. When they are running they sound like when you rub your hand on wood really fast except 1 000 000 times louder. They are used to transport people and things to different places. For example they can carry freight and are also used when things need to be transported. People rarely use steam locomotives today.
RACK AND PINION GEARS
Some steam trains use rack and pinion gears. The wheels are pinions and the track is the rack
Steam locomotives have gears inside of them to help the wheels move. Three types of gears are used. They are valve gears, running gears and driving gears. The gears also help the steam locomotives work.
Steam locomotives are mostly made from steel or aluminum components. The interiors are made from wood and fabric. The steam is made from coal being put into a boiler. The steam can also be made from wood or oil being put in the boiler.
Train tracks are made of hot rolled steel with a profile of a asymmetrical I-beam. The steel used is very strong. Wooden train tracks are made of wood but wear out quickly. Hard wood such as jarrah and karri were better than soft woods like fir.
The steam powered the locomotive.
Pulleys and gears are simple machines. Simple machines make work easier. A pulley is a simple machine that is like a spool except with a groove in it that spins. The groove is for the rope to go in. You can use a pulley to lift a load instead of lifting it up with your body because when you pull down on the rope of the pulley the load goes up so it is easier. There are different kinds of pulleys (like combined pulley systems and pulley systems that have single double and triple pulleys) that use different amounts of force to move the load! A load is the thing you are lifting that has a weight . A gear is a wheel with teeth on it. The number of teeth on the gear impacts its speed. If a 30 toothed big gear was attached to a10 toothed small gear, the small gear would go around 3 times faster because 10 times 3 is 30. That would make it easier. Pulleys and gears are used a lot to make work easier. There are different kinds of gear systems including...
A gear train is 3 gears together. The 1st and 3rd gear go the same direction, while the 2d gear goes the opposite direction.
Rack and pinion gears are a type of gear where the gear spins on a rack (the device at the bottom of the picture)
PARTS THAT THEY HAVE
A Steam locomotive has lots of parts in it. Here are some of the parts: boiler to make the steam and firebox, valve and running gears to move the wheels, water (in the boiler), air brake pump to help the steam locomotive and many more.

WHO INVENTED THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE?
Richard Threvethick invented the first locomotive in 1803 in England and first used it there. Steam locomotives have been around for 211 years.
