SKILL AND ABILITY
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

DEFINITIONS
TYPES
CHARACTERISTICS
EXAMPLES

WHAT IS SKILL?
AND WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SKILLFUL PERFORMANCE

The learned ability to bring about pre determined results with maximum certainty often with the minimum outlay of time, energy or both

TYPES OF SKILL
COGNITIVE

PERCEPTUAL

MOTOR

PSYCHOMOTOR
ABILITY
How are they different to skills?
CLASSIFICATION OF SKILL
When analysing skills it is useful to be able to group those together which may have similar characteristics
Consider the following words
Aesthetically Pleasing
Controlled
Efficient (doesn’t waste time or energy)
Fluent/Smooth
Accurate
Consistent
Effortless

CHARACTERISTICS OF
SKILLED PERFORMANCE

LAGER!
Learned
Aesthetic
Goal directed
Effortless/Efficient
Recognised technique

Involves the brain – thinking / understanding tactics / knowledge of rules

Taking in stimuli / Awareness / reading the game

A physical action e.g. run / kick / shoot / pass /jump

A combination of above

INHERITED, INNATE, BORN WITH, GENETIC
EXAMPLES OF ABILITIES
The components of fitness are all abilities -
co-ordination
flexibility
agility
balance
speed etc.
Gross Motor Abilities –
involve movement and often linked to fitness / innate physical ability

- Gross Perceptual abilities – involve processing information and starting a movement [brain & body]

Abilities can be sub divided into 2 main categories

Why bother classifying skills?
This allows the teacher or coach to
study the general requirements of a skill and select the appropriate method of practice and learning environment.

How do we classify skills?
is commonly based on the use
of a continuum or sliding scale.

Discrete skills involve;
A clear beginning and end
Short time duration for completion
To repeat the skill it must started again
For example, cricket shot, kicking a ball, tennis shot, somersault or catching an object

WHEN LEARNING A SKILL SUCH AS TRIPLE JUMPING PERFORMERS WILL USE THEIR ABILITIES TO IMPROVE THEIR LEVEL OF SKILL. BRIEFLY EXPLAIN THE TERMS ABILITY AND SKILL
Skill is something that we learn/acquire
Ability is something that we are born with/innate
Abilities form the foundations for skill

PERFORMERS IN THE WOMEN'S HEPTATHLON COMPETE IN 100m SPRINT, HIGH JUMP, LONG JUMP, SHOT PUTT, JAVELIN, 800m AND 100m HURDLES. NAME GIVING A REASON FOR YOUR CHOICE ONE HEPTATHLON EVENT THAT IS PREDOMINANTLY
i) an open skill
ii) a continuous skill
iii) a serial skill
iv) a self-paced skill
(i) 800m;
Environment may change - pace/tactics/decisions made; 2 marks
(ii) 800m/100m hurdles/100m;
Repeated actions/no distinct beginning and end; 2 marks
(iii) 100m/high jump/long jump/shot put/javelin/100m hurdles;
Consists of/able to be broken down/practised into (discrete) parts/egs; 2 marks
(iv) High jump/long jump/shot put/javelin;
Started when performer ready/pace of movement controlled by performer.
N.B Permit other activities if justified 2 marks

FRONT CRAWL IS A STYLE OF SWIMMING AND MAY BE CLASSIFIED ON A CONTINUA AS OPEN OR CLOSED, SELF PACED OR EXTERNALLY PACED, GROSS OR FINE AND DISCRETE OR CONTINUOUS. CLASSIFY THE FRONT CRAWL ACCORDING TO THE FOUR CONTINUA AND THEN JUSTIFY YOUR SELECTION ON THE SELF/EXTERNALLY PACED AND DISCRETE/CONTINUOUS CONTINUA
(i) Closed, self paced or externally paced, gross and continuous.
(1 mark for any 3, 2 marks for 4)
(ii) 1 Self paced - performer dictates the rate at which they swim at;
2 Externally paced - swimmer competing in a race / or against a set rate in training;
(sub max 1 mark)
3 Continuous - the end of one movement is the beginning of the next / ongoing.
(max 2 marks)

EXPLAIN THE TERMS SKILL AND SBILITY AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEM
Skill is something that we learn/acquire
Ability is something that we are born with/innate
Abilities form the foundations for skill

CLASSIFY SPRINGBOARD DIVING ACCORDING TO THE FOUR CONTINUA AND JUSTIFY EACH OF YOUR CHOICES
Springboard diving
Closed – as the environment stays the same if in a swimming pool
Self paced – the performers decides when to start
Discrete – clear beginning and end
Gross – uses major muscle groups

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A SKILLED PERFORMANCE
Aesthetic
Controlled
Well-timed/All the time in the world
Effortless
Fluent/smooth
Efficient
