The Invasion of Poland
September 1, 1939
German troops invaded Poland and conducted a "Blitzkrieg" (lightning attack), setting off war in Europe.
The Soviets also invaded.

A blitzkrieg helped Germany take control of the land to the west and all the way to the coast of France
For nearly a year the Germans bombed London, beginning the Battle of Britain. They were unable to defeat the British.
Japan planned to surprise the US at Midway but by cracking intelligence codes the US was prepared! This marked a turning point for the war in the Pacific.
Germany invaded the USSR but were not ready to face the freezing cold winter. The Soviet Union defeats Germany, marking a turning point for the war in Eastern Europe.
American and other Allied troops landed in Normandy, France to begin the freeing of Western Europe.

The last German attack on the Western front. It was the largest and costliest battle fought by the American forces.
