Introducing
Print
Flint Group was a supplier of blankets to DS Smith Italy at the time they invested in new EB technology from press manufacturer Goebbel. As the only print company in Europe to adopt this technology, DS Smith looked to global leader in Energy Curing products, Flint Group to support them.

Flint Group has very good EB business in N America, with market leading products, so we took the existing formula from there, adapted it to comply with European regulations and began to produce in our European facility.

DS Smith Italy – Case Study – Perfect Technology
Combining ink and blanket technology from one supplier for this unique system has given DS Smith a solid and reliable platform for their production – Something that no other single supplier can offer in Europe.
In addition we were able to supply suitable blankets for the EB curing system, thanks to our long term experience in North America. These blankets were again formulated based on North American specifications and are now produced in Europe specially for DS Smith
We’re now looking into what other areas Flint Group can support us in, for example with our preflight process, our European colour library and our print quality improvement projects.”
“I like Flint Group’s approach to the conversion of our Lockerbie site with a clearly defined structure to the project.
In fact, a key benefit of working with Flint Group is the wide range of services they provide; a big one for me being the support they will give us in ISO accreditation.

Westrock - Case Study
As part of a continuous improvement programme at WestRock, Flint Group, as the incumbent ink supplier were asked to supply a product that would work across a variety of board qualities - especially important for them as there were some jobs where they experienced partial delamination of the coated board surface.

We identified an existing product from our range, F918 as ideal for this application but it was necessary to develop a Low Tack version to cope with the delamination issue.
Thanks to the close cooperation between WestRock and Flint Group on this project, the new product has now been successfully rolled-out as standard across all of their sites in EMEA.
The WestRock plant in the Netherlands was the test site for a new product development project which has successfully resulted in the launch of a new lower tack range – Arrowstar 4000 Low Tack

GPI Masnieres were running with competitor’s IPA, at levels above 10-12%, whilst having issues with excessive board debris build -up on blankets as well as issues of ink scumming on various designs. GPI's Masnieres sister site Bristol (UK) runs without issues on the same Flint Group Novastar F908 Low Tack Bio inks on a similar quality board, and using similar plates. The only difference was the use in Bristol of a specific experimental fount - Varn E9143/1. It was agreed to trial and switch Masnieres over to the E9143/1 fount whilst reducing the IPA dosage as this was felt to be too high and a lower % would help to avoid the inks over-emulsification.
The estimated IPA consumption prior to the trials was around 36,000litres/year – after dropping the % of IPA, this came down to around 27,000 litres/year – a saving of 9,000 litres/year
DS Smith Case Study – Perfect Supply
- After several months of successful partnership, DSS management is very satisfied with the
results and now the scope of the project will be extended to include KPI projects (Perfect
Force) on ink mileage and waste reduction and a more deep rooted exploration of how
Flint Group’s colour management solution can benefit DSS Europe wide.
- A comprehensive road map to drive the project was included in a supply agreement,
including conversion (colour matching) from the incumbent supplier of over 200 spot
colours. Flint Group installed a dedicated in-plant operation and ran workshops for training
and appreciation in print to all areas of the Lockerbie work force.
- Flint Group presented a compelling package to assist in this continuous improvement journey:
on site ink mixing and dispensing system, support in ISO compliance, food packaging GMP
including full conversion to LM technology.
- A number of improvement opportunities existed at the DSS Lockerbie, Scotland site, including
colour management, inventory management and general print best practice. Coupled with the
need to convert to low migration technology. This would require product evaluation,
qualification, implementation and rationalisation across all processes of the business; inks,
waterbased coatings, UV varnishes, pressroom chemicals and transfer media.
Ival Spa - Italy

"I’ve bought most of my print consumables from Flint Group for a long time and I have always been more than satisfied with their services and products. With our large format new presses it is very important to have the support of top performing inks and blankets.. I know I can rely on Flint Group".
