The Holy Spirit
Who is the Holy Spirit?
CCC #685:
To believe in the holy spirit is to profess that the Holy Spirit is one of the persons of the Holy Trinity..
CCC #684:
Through his grace, the Holy Spirit is the first to awaken faith in us and to communicate to us the new life, which is to "know the Father and the One whom he has sent, Jesus Christ."
CCC #687
The Spirit who "has spoken through the prophets" makes us hear the Father's word, but we do not hear the Spirit Himself.
CCC #737
The Spirit prepares men and woman and goes out to them with his grace, in order to draw them to Christ.
Ultimately, the Spirit "Animates all creation, awakens faith, enables communication with Christ, grants gifts to all, master and source of prayer, reveals God, reveals the Trinity, [and is the] source of all holiness..."
How does the Holy Spirit

"We believe in the Holy Spirit, who is Lord, and Giver of life, who is adored and glorified together with the Father and the Son. He spoke to us by the prophets; He was sent by Christ after His resurrection and His ascension to the Father; He illuminates, sanctifies, protects and guides the Church; He purifies the Church's members if they do not shun His grace. His action, which penetrates to the inmost of the soul, enables man to respond to the call of Jesus: Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect (Mt. 5:48)."
Pentecost
"And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?" (2: 2-8)
Every Man and Woman is made in the image of God
everything that is good is of God

Therefore the spirit of God in the world can influence and work though anyone for its purposes

There are 7 main characteristics of someone influenced by the HS
What do you think about the Holy Spirit so far?

What do you know about Jesus and the Holy Spirit?

Jesus and the Holy Spirit
Jesus Baptism

Matt. 3:16, "And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him."
Jesus in the desert
Matt. 4:1,
"Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil."
Casting out Demons

Matthew 12:28

But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.
Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead
Rom. 8:11

"But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you."
Whoever hears my voice hears the truth
1 John 5:6, "And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth."
Wisdom helps us to know how to use the knowledge we have.

Wise judgment helps us to see what is good and how to achieve it.

It is the tool to help us think deeply and to uncover undiscovered truths about life; about love; about God.
Think of an example in your life or someone else where you have seen wisdom
Understanding is realizing why things are the way they are, and knowing what and when things need to be done.

Understanding heightens the awareness we have for the world around us. It deepens our compassion and in turn, presents new opportunity for healing, for relationships, for love.

Understanding helps us find God and the good in every situation.
Making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
Proverbs 2:2-5
Give an example from your life when you came to a point of understanding and could solve a problem that helped someone or made them feel understood or felt empathized with
Counsel helps us to have Right Judgement, we can make good decisions with the gift of counsel, knowing right from wrong and helping others to do so as well.

Proverbs 19:20

Listen to counsel and accept discipline, that you may be wise the rest of your days.
Also known as COURAGE— this gift gives you the ability to stand up for your faith, and to have a firmness in mind in order to persevere past evil and toward goodness.
Psalm 56:3-4
When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose words I praise, In God I trust; I will not be afraid.
Pick a time in your life where you were given wise council that helped you see right and wrong
Think of a time where you might have had an unexplained amount of courage to stand up for something or someone despite what others thought
Knowledge or information is the root of how we see the world; what we know is the foundation of our perception,
through wisdom and understanding we can receive the knowledge of God and what is truly good and therefore give others good information
James 1:5
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously without reproach, and it will be given to them.
The gift of knowledge helps us to understand the meaning of God's revelation.
We increase our knowledge when we learn more about the scripture and tradition. God gives us the gift of knowledge and we are supposed to make the most of it by always trying to learn new things and increasing our knowledge and thereby get to Know God better.
Proverbs 1:7 "The fear of the LORD is the begging of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."
Can you think of a time where you learned something about someone that helped you understand them better and therefore made you appreciate and respect them more?

Explain
Reverence, devotion, loyalty
to God and to the tasks we have in life; to work hard and give thanks in every situation.
To show full respect and recognition toward our Creator by practicing
good stewardship
in the areas we have been intrusted with.
Answering to the call of our duty through devotion and
thankfulness
.
Prioritizing
the glory of God and the good above all else.
Taking time for prayer
Setting aside time for other people
Change our behavior for the good of others

Piety is how we show love and it leads us away from all selfishness
Think of a time in your life where you have been pious toward God or a task
Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
.

It is also known as Wonder and Awe; we can be in awe of God and His creations.
It does not mean that we should run and hide because God is going to punish us, but rather that we should receive the the gift of the Holy Spirit wherein we dread to offend God or be separated from him.
People with this gift don't forget the worship of God and aren't afraid to ask for Gods help during their problems.
People who are not christians can exhibit some of these gifts but it usually takes them longer to discover them and use them and they are usually not as strong.

Through conformation ( pubic declaration of faith, understanding christian mission) someone is given all seven gifts, but it is up to the individual to use them and call on the Holy Spirit to teach them so the seeds planted at confirmation can tun into fruits.

Like with anything, God is
generous in mercy and grace
and will give us the good things and godly things we ask for.

Gifts of the HS are given for the
service of OTHERS
and a building up of the body of Christ
what is fear usually for?
Gifts of the Holy Spirit are different from the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Gifts are the "tools" and attitudes which God gives us that make it possible for us to do God's will. The Fruits are what we develop if we practice and refine the Gifts. The Fruits naturally flow from the Gifts. In short, the "Gifts" are like seeds that God gives us and "Fruits" are what we receive from planting the seed through hard work.
Jesus said you will know those who love me by their fruit: Galatians 5 Freedom in Christ

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery...
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love...
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. (VICES)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Love
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another”
(John 13:34-35).
Love is a choice to put others before yourself and work for their good even when they don't deserve it.
Isaiah 26:3-4 “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for in YAH, the Lord, is everlasting strength.”
Ephesians 4:1-3
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
1 Corinthians 13
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails.
“The disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 13:52). “. . . For the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).

Romans 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.
