Life Itself Is A Mystery things happen unexpectedly And you have to live and experience in order to reveal those mysteries. This is the story of Alex... Alex was a nice, well-mannered young man that really cared about... Ethics, Responsibility and his Family, but mainly his grandmother Becky. Alex and Becky were extremely close, during Alex’s childhood, he spent most of his time with his grandma because both of his parent were very busy at work and with Alex’s older brother and sister. Although Alex grew up and his life become busy and full of tasks of his first semester in college and studying, he never stopped visiting his grandma, sometimes he used to take her out to eat and to the park to watch the birds and the squirrels But one day Becky got very sick, and she died 3 weeks later, giving an unexpected turn to Alex’s life. Becky’s death made Alex rethink about what he wanted to accomplish in life. He decided to change his major to a social work major, because he wanted to affect people’s life in a good and positive way. During his last semester Alex decided to get an internship at a retirement home and keep a daily journal for one of his last projects. During his internship Alex, meet many different old people and he felt that he was actually helping people out and making a change in this world. Once he was done with the project, he decided to volunteer 10 hours a week in order to keep helping the community. As the time passed by, Alex kept enjoying the time he spent at the retirement home, especially because he met a sweet elder woman named Lori. This woman was a nice woman, around 80 years old; however, she was an immigrant from Cuba so she did not have any family left in the United States. One day Lori asked Alex if he could visit her more often because she was lonely and the nurses were not giving her the attention she needed. Instantly Alex accepted Lori’s request because Alex felt something special about this woman, something like a connection between them, a strong feeling that motivated him. Instantly Alex accepted Lori’s request because Alex felt something special about this woman, something like a connection between them, a strong feeling that motivated him. He took his homework to the retirement home, so when he was doing nothing and when Lori was asleep, he could start his homework. In addition, he shared with Lori all the reading he had, so he did his school task and spent time with Lori at the same time. Lori was fascinated with the things that Alex used to read for her because she found interesting all the things about social work and psychology, her childhood was hard, so this topic was important for her. One day, Lori mentioned to Alex that the nurses were mistreating her; she said that the nurses weren't given her attention and that they would’t help her because she was Hispanic and the nurses were white. Alex helped Lori in many and things and he decided to stay at the retirement home to do his homework because he felt calmer and relax so he stayed until very late. That night Alex saw something unexpected, when he came to Lori’s bedroom to say goodbye, he saw how the nurse named Molly was yelling at her about how stupid, useless she was and making fun of her because of her ethnical background, bringing tears out from Lori’s tired eye Alex started to notice and examine the nurses and all the employees’ behavior with Lori and with all of the other residents of the retirement home. Everything looked normal, the nurses did their job maybe not in the best manner but at least they did it with all the residents, apparently, they were not being racist at all. However, one day Alex helped Lori in many and things and he decided to stay at the retirement home to do his homework because he felt calmer and relax so he stayed until very late. That night Alex saw something unexpected, when he came to Lori’s bedroom to say goodbye, he saw how the nurse named Molly was yelling at her about how stupid, useless she was and making fun of her because of her ethnical background, bringing tears out from Lori’s tired eyes. Alex was extremely mad, he did not say anything, what he did was that he recorded the nurse’s action with his phone without her noticing. The next day in the morning Alex went with the general manager and showed him the video, the manager was very upset and immediately called that mean nurse and fired her, later he started an investigation to find out if there was more racist nurses in that place. Lori was very grateful with Alex, she used to suffer a lot with every night with Molly, so the fact that she was gone was a relief for Lori and some of the other residents that were also mistreated. The retirement home was now a more pleasant place to be, definitely, Molly’s absence was the main reason for this, all the residents were happy and comfortable in the home. However, some days later Alex had face another conflict between one of the residents and a nurse. This time an elderly man named Wallace was accusing a nurse named Martha of steeling his wristwatch while he was sleeping at night. The nurse Martha defended herself by saying that the man was just accusing her because she was Hispanic, now the staff was accusing one of the residents of being racist. Alex did not know whom to believe One night Alex installed a secret video camera in Wallace’s bedroom and left a gold ring in the table next to the bed, so if somebody would grab it, everything would be recorded. The next morning the ring was gone and Alex watched the video with the manager of the retirement home, just like Wallace said, Martha took the ring and the middle of the night. Martha was fired and she confessed that Molly was her accomplice, both of them stole and mistreated the residents. Alex’s graduation was around the corner, his final project about his internship was due and he had to start thinking how he was going to tell Lori that he had to stop volunteering a the retirement home. That day came Alex announced that he had to leave, he got a job in a hospital out of town, and he would leave just after his graduation. Not just Lori but all of the residents were grateful with Alex, what he did and change was incredible for them, the elderly people were sad but at the same time happy because they knew that Alex life was starting and that many experiences were coming.
