Surprisinglee. Glee is the word. "By its very definition, GLEE is about opening yourself up to joy." Ian Brennan, an actor, wrote a movie script entitled 'GLEE.'
Ryan Murphy, creator of Nip/Tuck on FX saw the script and suggested making a TV series featuring 5-6 musical numbers per episode.
In 2008, he pitched it to 20th Century Fox executives Dana Walden and Gary Newman.
Although the show wasn't an easy sell, Walden and Newman took Murphy to pitch his idea to FOX head Kevin Reilly who quickly gave Murphy the green light after seeing his passion and complex plan he had created to set up the world of the show.
There was nothing on the television landscape like Glee, when it was pitched. FUN FACT: One of the only notes on the initial pilot script was that the show needed a villain. One of the most iconic villains in television history, trash talking cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (played by Jane Lynch), was born from this. Ryan Murphy was insistent on casting unknowns for all the roles.
The cast was populated by Broadway veterans Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele, and Jenna Ushkowtiz as well as new finds such as Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron, and Chris Colfer.
The Glee pilot debuted in May 2009 after American Idol to follow the music theme. The show premiered to 9+ million.
In the pilot, Glee covered Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin' which quickly became their signature song.
The song raced up the charts over the summer and by the time Glee re-aired the pilot in the fall, the show was a hit. Musical Contributions Glee has had an amazing impact on the music industry.
