Transcript of Judgment

on the Religious Lost
Romans 11:7-10
God's Judgment on the Religious Lost:
Romans 11:7-10
Hardening as Judgment
Romans 9:16-18

"16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.”
"No one is redeemed except through unmerited mercy, and no one is condemned except through merited judgment."
– Augustine
God’s judgment of hardening drives us to our only hope . . .

In the Power of the Gospel.
The Religious Lost
The Hardened of Israel
A Spirit of Stupor
Romans 11:8
Spiritually Blind
Spiritually Deaf
Matthew 23:16-24
Camel Swallowing Gnat Strainers
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!"
Signs of the Spiritually Blind
Neglect the big (justice, love, and mercy)
For the little (tithing, attendance, service)
Focus on Secondary Issues
Ignore Core Doctrine
Think religious observance is the same as loving God
Ignore their own sin while focusing on the sin of others (John 9:39-40)
Jeremiah 6:10
“To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, they cannot listen; behold, the word of the Lord is to them an object of scorn; they take no pleasure in it.”

Zechariah 7:11
“But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears that they might not hear.”
Despise the Word
Ezekiel 33:30-32

“30 “As for you, son of man, your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, ‘Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ 31 And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain. 32 And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument, for they hear what you say, but they will not do it.”
Entertained not Transformed
Signs of the Spiritually Deaf
Bored by the Word, can't be bothered with its truths, finds the Word unhelpful, and is not in awe of the transforming power of the Word
May be very faithful to hear . . . but they do not 'do' the Word
Avoidance, Entertainment, or Duty instead of joy filled obedience of the Word
Comfort as Condemnation
Romans 11:9
Psalm 69:20-23

“20 Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. 21 They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. 22 Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. 23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually.”
Spiritually Snared
Don't pursue stewardship but comfort
In Money
In Rest
In Goals
Don't think about the motives of
their service
Bend thier Backs
Romans 11:10
Matthew 11:28-30

“28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 23:4

"They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger"
Broken and Terrified
View the demands of Christ as too much while at the same time they operate under the weight of legalism
They prefer the safety of their self-reliance instead of faith alone, in Christ alone, and through grace alone
Hope in Christ
Paul's View of the Hardened
Paul's Hope in the Gospel
The Gospel brings Light and Life into Darkness and Death
2 Corinthians 4:6

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
The Gospel brings Light and Adoption into Darkness and Slavery
Acts 26:16-18

“16 But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, 17 delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you 18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.”
