7 in 10 girls believe that they are not good enough or don't measure up in some way. Including their looks, performance in school and relationships with friends and family members.
38% of boys use protein supplements and 6% have experimented with steroids. 40% of boys in middle school and high school exercise daily to build muscle mass.
About 20% of teens will experience depression before adulthood.
Causes of low self esteem
criticism from parents or authority figures
pressure from unrealistic expectations
sometimes a teen is their own harshest critic
Effects of Low Self Esteem
20% of teens experience depression before adulthood
dysthymia, a type of long lasting, mild,depression affects about 2% of teens
15% of teens with depression later suffer from bipolar disorder
two thirds of teens with major depression will suffer from another mental disorder, such as dysthymia, addiction to drugs or alcohol, or antisocial behavior
depressed teens struggle with school, jobs and mantaning relationships
catch physical illnesses quickly and easily
What matters to me is that every person is comfortable with who they are. Plenty is done to try to prevent bullying in schools. But we are never taught to fight the biggest bully we know, ourselves.
What is low self esteem?
Low self esteem is a thinking disorder in which an individual views him/herself as inadequate, unworthy, and/or incompetent. Once formed, this negative view of self permeates every thought, producing faulty assumptions and ongoing self-defeating behavior.
The leading causes of death among teens are
the leading cause of suicide is untreated depression
the causes of depression are very similar to the effects of low self esteem
How to Overcome Low Self Esteem
kick out the harsh critic in you
no one but you can make you feel bad
keep a journal
do one thing for someone or something every day without excepting anything in return
pick a hobby you are good at and become even better at it
think about three good things about you or in your life
