Dentistry is the profession or science that deals with the prevention and treatment of diseases and abnormalities of teeth, gums, and oral cavity as well as the removal, correction, and replacement of decayed, damaged, or lost parts of teeth which included operations a that of filling and crowning teeth, the straightening of teeth, and the construction of artificial dentures.
History (continued)
uses “Dental Pelican”(bottom left) and “Dental Key”(bottom right) to extract teeth (14th century)
1840- the first dental college was opened: the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery.
1885- the first toothbrush was produced in America by H.N. Wadsworth
1939-first real electric toothbrush was produced: developed in Switzerland

7000 BC: Indus Valley Civilization -treating the mouth for tooth decay
first method of treatment was bow drills
first tools used for woodworking and treating tooth problems
5000 BC- Sumerians blamed tooth worms for dental issues
Ancient Greece(1700s)- Hippocrates and Aristotle wrote about treating decayed teeth/having teeth extracted
tooth extracted- using forceps (below) was often used to treat many diseases (middle ages)
professionals doing these extractions were barber (middle ages)

Reportedly some ancient doctors mistook nerves as tooth worms and tried to yank them out (Ouch!)
1700s- the idea that a worm traveled through your mouth and was the cause of dental pain lasted until it was proven false
1650 - 1800: the concepts behind what we now think of as dentistry got its start
most Americans did not pick up on the dental trend to brush their teeth until after World War II
most Americans not only focus on the health aspects of keeping their teeth clean, but many are just as concerned with the cosmetic appearance as well
