Introduction to The Giver by Lois Lowry Brief Introduction Journal #2 All groups will present their Project.
One member will give the introduction to your Utopian Community.
Each member will speak about his/her individual rules, give examples and explanation why they choice to have those rules. Presentation Within your group discuss rules found at home, at school and in the community/society.

Determine which rules you believe are important and which are not. Discussion What is your idea of a perfect society?

What rules would you have, if any?

Explain why you would have those rules or why you wouldn’t have any rules? Group: (List Names)

_______________________________________ The Giver is a dystopian children's novel by Lois Lowry. It is set in a society which is at first presented as a utopian society and gradually appears more and more dystopian. The novel follows a boy named Jonas through the twelfth year of his life. The society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to "Sameness," a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Dystopian is a community or society, usually fictional, that is in some important way undesirable or frightening. It is the opposite of a utopia.

Using the graphic organizer, discuss with your group your everyday choices. Discuss Choices No Choice – Rules, Laws, growing old, death, etc.

Some Choice – Need glasses/contacts

Total Choice – What you wear, what music you listen to. Examples of Choice Do you have choices in your life?

Each group must create a society name, group color and musical selection that directly reflects the societies beliefs.

Each group member is required to give two rules that MUST be followed by all society members. Along with the rules, there must be an explanation to why this is important to have within your society.

These societies are going to be presented to the class and your grades will be reflective of the amount of effort you put in both individually and as a group.

Have Fun and Be Creative!!!!!! “Perfect Society” Project Government and Values – What type of Gov’t would you have? Who is in charge? Who would make and enforce the rules?


Family- What is the ideal family? How are families formed? Who will care for children? Who will care for elderly? Are there any family traditions (ex. Christmas, Birthdays, etc.)


Education and Careers- Describe your school setting? What age will students attend? What would they learn? Will girls and boys be treated differently? Who chooses what career each member of the community will pursue?


Technology and Location- Describe the level of technology? Will your community have a futuristic technology or go back to a simpler time? What transportation is available? What about communication? Describe the layout and type of location of your community? What is the weather like? Do you have seasons? Do you live near the ocean, desert, farm fields, etc. Some Topics to Consider:
